For a bizarre experience have a look at Blythe (or it might be Quartzite) on I-10 near the California/Arizona border. In winter snow geese concentrate there with their RVs. Everything you could imagine in RV life, and a lot that is currently beyond your imagination. Plus it was the site of my favourite example of American culinary wonders - Froot Loops (the sugary breakfast cereal) on the salad bar for dinner.

So once we are at Park City. We are staying at The Lodge at Mountain Village. It's ski in \ ski out right in the village centre. We got ourselves a studio loft.

It has a full kitchen, so we can eat in most nights.

That isn't the village centre, Main St is. But it's convenient for skiing.

Mrs Astro and I will be using the loft upstairs.

Looking forward to the report on Park City. I believe it's only recently been linked with The Canyons creating a huge lift linked area.

You spoilt my next post for tomorrow. LOL.

Very Whistler Peak to Peak like I'm told.

Makes it the largest resort in the USA.

    I'll post pics.

So one of the appeals of Park City was the new gondola, called “Quicksilver". This links Park City with Canyons and makes the resort America’s largest ski resort with 7,300 skiable acres.

Quicksilver opens Dec 18th. So it will make huge difference as we are staying ski in \ ski out. So can access both resorts from our front door, by ski lifts.

Youngest Astro and I are chomping at the bit. Mrs Astro is a little overwhelmed at tackling such a huge resort. And fears getting lost. LOL

Will be interesting to see if it's quicker to traverse across to Canyons via lift or take the bus.

PCMR was pretty underwhelming when I lived there but it looks like Vail is going to realign a few lifts and potentially fix the issues I had with the place.

The other side of the ridgeline is very statistically snow-sure, with some epic terrain to boot.

But even PC averages a boatload more snow than SP.

Yes, the first couple of days will be spent learning and tackling PC. Put it this way. If the Quicksilver Gondola wasn't there. We probably would have just stayed at PC.

4 resorts in 3 weeks will be quite some variety. Adding Canyons makes it 5. So I see it as a bonus.

If that is the sort of thing that worries her you can say goodbye to Sun Peaks forever. She will love US resorts.

With family so close to sun Peaks. I don't think we will ever say goodbye to Sun Peaks. That said I really am looking forward to discovering many resorts in the us, both this year and in the future.

Deer Valley is a 10 minute bus ride, directly above PC. Yeah, you'll have to ante up for a lift pass but....it's Right There (and you get to ski a mountain where there are only skiers.....by that, I mean......everyone must have a plank on each foot......ummmm, everyone has the same range of vision and are pointed downhill, doing predictable turns..........and there are no

    Snowboarders)

Wait 'til she hears about it. A few decades since I have been there, but I still remember the valet service carrying skis from the car park. And the gold taps in the bathrooms. And the perfect grooming....

you should be able to walk across to Cobra Dogs from those digs and Main St is just a short (free) bus ride away (or a longer stroll) Been 4 years since I was last there so not sure on the restaurant scene but CM recommended Flying Sumo to us for sushi and we were never disappointed there in 2 years back to back. Davanza's for pizza. Distillery for cougars, I mean whiskey....... and you must take Mrs Astro to the St Regis terrace at Deer Valley for Bloody Marys and truffle fries ( you can take junior as well)

Incidentally, since you have a car, if you'd like a side trip for a day - head to Sundance. You can ski there and it's very inexpensive, but we just had a down day, wandered around and had lunch. Very scenic. It was a great day trip and went to the ice castles and a geothermal spring near Midway on way home.

Beaver Creek - they have two cabins up the hill where you can have dinner. Accessed by sleigh on a Kat. If you want to take junior go to Beanos. If you want an "adult" night go to Zach's (was amazing)

make sure you ski over to Bachelor Gulch and have lunch at the Ritz Carlton - good times.

Mamie's at the top of Bachelor Gulch in Beaver Creek is another one of our faves to stop off for a drink/meet up. And the Bloody Mary's at Arrowhead are the best on the mountain.

Well it snows about a third more in PC than SP so that's a good thing, PCMR has pretty uninspiring terrain but Canyons can be great fun.

The snowfall stats can be misleading though. Base depth coverage and snow quality between SP and Park City appears to me to be substantially similar.

I think that's selling PC pretty short.

Due to the blanket coverage of SP on the forums over the years I reckon we've all got a pretty good feel for how it works there, PC in my books is substantially snowier.

Looking at historical figures of base depth, a good year in PC nudges up to 130" on the ground - I remember at least 3 out of my 6 years there being north of 100" with an average year being about 70" and a poor year being about 40". SP's numbers are vastly lower.

Incidentally, we are doing something different this year. After having a day at Knott's Berry Farm, we are flying to SLC, picking up a car, hanging out in Park City area for a couple of days, then driving on to Steamboat. No skiing in PC unfortunately as $ is a bit tight this time. Kids want to do the Alpine Coaster, wife wants to shop! It'll be nice just to finally go there at least.

    Hope you're right CM.

I will definitely enjoy the differing terrain. I'll miss the social aspects of the crew at SP.

Youngest Astro will enjoy the new resort. But I'm not sure the kids program will be anywhere near as good.

Just looking at lessons for him. I was paying less than $50 per day at SP. It's over $200 per day at PC. And he loves lessons.

SP also had a freesytle program for the kids. It was about $70 per day. Which was crazy reasonable. I really don't see anything like this at PC.

For Mrs Astro. SP had the free mountain guides, which she loved to ski with. And did so everyday. I cannot see anything like this at PC.

As the kids get older, we are likely to add on diversions. We went to Winter Park last year for a couple of days. I reckon we'll end up doing the full road trip to Colorado in a few years.

Lessons at the big destination resorts in the US are much more expensive than at a place like SP, for sure.

Yeah you're definitely venturing from budget BC to prime US - PC is only a half step behind Aspen, Beaver Creek, Telluride in terms of clientele, which Deer Valley is on par with. The kids programs are amazing, but you also pay for what you get.

Deer Valley definitely has free guided tours for Mrs Astro.

Thanks for that. I'll be sure to pass that on to her right away. She does love, just learning a mountain. But has a terrible sense of direction.

She feels much safer doing it with a group that would ski at her pace.

Her sense of direction is so bad she carries two, 2-way radios. A small short range one on the outside of her jacket. Then a second larger, long range one she keeps tucked away.

As soon as she gets disorientated. She knows she can call me and I'll either, guide her down. Or come to her, and show her down.

I really enjoyed DV. It's an easy 10 minute bus ride away, and you'll need a point of comparison with Beaver Creek, the US's glitziest resorts. These 2 are of DV

    Yeah that's a great run.

Another part of DV that not many people realise is just how North it all faces. Won't really affect Astro in January but later in the year the aspect is gold, still dry snow right through March, one year we had a couple of DV instructors in a house and a PC - he was sweating it out and trudging around in the slush while we were still skiing on chalky winter snow.
