Ah, Deer Valley. Two planks rule. Never a snowboarder to dodge
You've just gotta watch out for the 60 year old blokes in shiny suits and stiff legs skiing at 100mph!
I think the great advantage the PC has is that, if you're not committed to a seasons or multi day pass at PCMR / Canyons (which is big improvement anyway), you can ski at 3 different resorts all within 10 minutes of each other (or connected) or you can jump in a car and head round to Cottonwood Canyons and ski a number of other great resorts for the day as well.
We did winters in 10/11 and 11/12 in PC. 10/11 was just about record snowfalls and then one year later in 11/12 it was like skiing at Buller - grass in the ruts on Blue bumps and not many of the advanced runs able to be opened. Like anywhere, there's no guarantees when you are locked in. Looking good early though
We booked in early for the cost saving.
The ski in / ski out Lodge we are staying at is super expensive. But I just checked. To book it now. Still over a month out. It's now 50% more. And that equates to thousands of dollars.
And Mrs Astro enjoys having a plan.
I see the Poons are back in the K2 cattledog.
Order has returned to the world.
Ok. So next stop is Beaver Creek. We are driving there directly from Park City. Planning a non-skiing travel day.
We are staying at Christie Lodge in Avon. It's about a 200 metre walk to Riverfront Gondola, which accesses Beaver Creek.
There is also a Free Bus from outside the door that saves the walk, or goes directly to Beaver Creek Main Village in about 5 mins.
I'll miss you terribly this year TP. Ralphy, Anthem, you and I, smashed some serious Double Blacks last year.
Say hi to the boys for me.
We have a 1 Bedroom Condo at Christie lodge. It has a full kitchen. It was pretty cheap at US$120 a night.
The Vail and Beaver Creek stay is the only stay where we just couldn't justify, ski in / ski out. pricing was in excess of US$500 a night.
Bed looks better than Park City, at least this one's horizontal
I'm a huge fan of staying off the interstates where possible. Not interested in constantly dealing with huge trucks and seeing motel chains and junk food pit stops instead of driving through nice towns, and google maps says it's 15 minutes shorter to take Hwy 40 and miss most of the interstate...and the added bonus of driving through Vernal and close to Dinosaur National Monument
And you drop onto I 70 before Glenwood Canyon, which is worth a look. IIRC I 70 between Glenwood Springs and Beaver Creek is not too horrendous.
And mirror is on wrong surface.
Dinosaur is an underrated little park
PC to Avon via Vernal HW40 and Steamboat is a nice drive. Steamboat to Wolcott HW131 is real cowboy farm country, albeit very white in winter. Excellent ski touring out of Yampa.
I70 is shit.
The Beav rocks, so much terrain for all.
The Dinosaur Nat Park visitor center is really great. Well worth 2 hours. The Museum at the Utah University in the outer eastern burbs of SLC is also fantastic. Well worth a 5 hour visit.
Mrs Astro has put Dinosaur Nat Park on the itinerary. She has asked that we leave PC early morning so as we can spend 2 hrs at the Visitors Centre.
I didn't realize that HW40 is actually the shortest route. Should be beautiful through there.
Obviously road conditions come into play. But I'm quite experienced in navigating winter roads.
This trip is really coming together.
HW40 is a main route so well cleared in winter. HW 131 the same but a lesser route, think perisher road through farm lands and without the potholes
PCMR is the sun peaks of Utah so you probably love it, although its a bit charmless
I preferred DV and around the other side to snowbird/alta.
I'm driving 40 from PC to Steamboat. Hoping for a clear day.
So whilst at Avon we are doing 2 days at Vail. We have friends at "The Landmark", right in the center of the Lionshead village.
They don't have a car. So we are driving to their condo. Parking in their Parking Space. Then making our day, base of operations, their condo.
We'll probably barely ski a fraction of the resort in 2 days. But it's definitely a resort that we needed to tick the "Skied it" box.
I see your beds are next to the pool this time...bit chilly for falling asleep under the stars !
Just do one run on the right hand two thirds of the front side and you've ticked that off. You will be hard pressed to tell the difference among those runs. Sun Peaks without the thrills.
Unless they have mountain guides. My day will be spent guiding Mrs Astro around. So I'm counting on those mountain guides.
Just find a guide to take you over to the Back Bowls, but make sure you do it within a day of any sun.
Complimentary Mountain Ski/Snowboard Tours
During the winter season, Community Guest Service volunteers provide complimentary tours of Vail Mountain for any guest whose ability level is intermediate or above.
General Mountain Tours leave from the Game Creek Desk adjacent to the top of the Eagle Bahn Gondola and from the top of Gondola One at the Mid Vail Ski School desk each morning promptly at 10:30 a.m. It is highly recommended to get to either location by 10:15 as each participant will be required to sign a liability release form before the tour. Each tour is considered a “Familiarization Tour” of the mountain and should last about 2 hours.
The Blue Sky Basin tour begins at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, and Friday, from Henry’s Hut across from Patrol Headquarters (PHQ) at the top of Chair 4. Please arrive at Henry’s Hut by 10:45 to sign a release form. This tour is recommended for High level intermediate or above skiers or riders.
Loving the Stoke Astro.
I'll be busy skiing the substandard SP terrain and small snowfalls, but will be thinking of you guys!!
Just awesome you were able to throw it together last minute.
Say hi to the wife and kids. I bet they're exited.
Looks like a great trip coming Astro!
In Vegas - check out the Mob Museum, it's in the old downtown part of Vegas. It's an old federal courthouse building that has been made over into a fascinating three floor exhibit of everything to do with the history of organised crime in the US in general and of course Vegas in particular. Needs half a day to do it justice. The Fremont area nearby is a bit less over the top than the Strip, but it has good energy in its way. You can spend a couple of days just walking the Strip and gawking at the outrageous buildings and people, need never set foot in a casino or bar to be entertained.
Never knew about the Mob Museum. Young Astro would love it.
Might see some family history there Astro.
Me and a mate are just about to book rooms at Christie Lodge. Couldn't find any other place to rent between us for 6 weeks that was convenient and not too expensive.
Don't worry about walking to the Gondola. The skier express runs every 15 minutes in peak and 30 minutes off peak. It picks up/drops off right at the front door and goes straight to the top of Beaver Creek after a couple of stops. I used to catch that same bus when I lived in Avon the last couple of years.
Directly across from the Christie Lodge is Vin48. They are a wine bar that does a fantastic happy hour every day with $5 wines and $7 small plates. A locals' favourite.
So wheels up tomorrow. First stop Vegas.
Bought my Elvis Jumpsuit today. Mrs Astro got a Marilyn Munroe outfit. Young Astro a Star Wars outfit. Should be one hell of a wedding in Vegas. I'll post some pics.
Wedding booked in at this place. http://www.elvischapel.com/
Have a ball, @Astro66 - I assume you will regardless! Send us lots of trip reports, snow condition updates and pics.
Skiing is great in PC atm.
So my FB tells me
Thanks guys. I can't wait to get to PC. But Mrs Astro has all her Coogee Cougars friends tuned in for the Vegas Wedding. So I'll have to be patient.
First ski day at PC is 4th Jan.
No live streaming of the big event @Astro66 ?
Yes there is live streaming. But Mrs Astro says the forum can't watch. Sorry mate.
So Jelly, what a bitchin way to start a trip to the states!
