From the full article - yep, it's in USD (to provide a comparable *earning* rate, even if it doesn't factor in tax or cost of living), and they note that Australia has a progressive payment schedule for instructers, with those holding more that 300 hours under their belt earning $45 per hour +.

That chart suggests that we're on about par though. The quality wouldn't be any different to any other country (France, Norway & Switzerland excepted).

Yeh but, wages have nothing to do with it.

He did not decide to become a violent pedo rapist based on his paycheck.

    Millions work for low wages.

I printed a scientific paper on meth use about 10yrs and gave it to some users in Adelaide so they were fully aware of what they were doing.

    Didn't go down well.

Very serious offenses. They charged him with aggravated sexual assault, inflicting actual bodily harm with intent to have sexual intercourse with another and possess prohibited drug.

He's pleaded guilty. Will serve a very long time, then be deported back to the UK.

I reckon 10 -15 years. Guilty plea gets him a discount and (AFAIK) the victims do not have permanent injuries.

Good point. The victims will do victim impact statements which may reveal more.

One of the worst documents I have ever read was a VI statement from a 16 year old rape victim. Truly horrible what the attack did to her.

I feel for his family - possibly a really nice family. They've effectively lost their son for whatever his term is, and can barely visit him for the duration of his sentence. Presumably they'd also be utterly horrified at what he's done. Yet, he's still their son. Awful for them. People rarely think of the loved ones of criminals.

Once he's gone, he ain't coming back.

As part of your application for a temporary or permanent visa, we will check for any criminal records. You may need to provide a police clearance from your country and your other countries of residence to us.

You will not pass the character test if you hold a substantial criminal record. If you don't pass the character test, you will not get a visa to enter Australia.

Greetings from Canada. Am coming to this thread late, having only found out about Williams' crime yesterday. I clicked on a ski industry news article and was gutted to see the face of Williams, with whom I'm casually acquainted and share many mutual friends, including his "best bud".

Williams was a snow chaser, having worked many recent seasons at Whistler and before that Cypress (a Vancouver day-skier hill). He attained his CSIA Level 4 in April 2017. Out of the 3000+ instructors passing CSIA exams each winter, typically less than 10 in all of Canada attain Level 4. It is completely accurate to state that he was "at the top of the game".

Williams was many things: charismatic, gifted, dedicated, accomplished and very well-loved by his students and most coworkers. He also had, as others have mentioned, his dark side. I can confirm that he was erratic and temperamental, and had an insufferable ego. At our snow-school season-end parties, the FIGJAM award was actually renamed the "Matt Williams" award. He was a prime example of what we call "bro culture" in North America, i.e. toxic masculinity. Stories of his womanizing are legend. A couple of years ago I was riding up the Whistler gondola with Williams, and became very uncomfortable when realizing he was coupled up with a very under-aged girl. A mere month ago, I was stuck listening to his best buddy recount a story of how their cohorts offered each other cash prizes at parties for whomever slept with the "ugliest", "youngest", etc. girl ... in retrospect this storytelling strikes me as bizarre; surely this this buddy must have been aware (which I wasn't) that Williams was sitting in jail for rape.

A lot of our mutual friends are saying things like this is a "complete shock", that they "can't believe it". None of us foresaw that things would go so far and turn out so badly, but I'm also not totally surprised ... only very disappointed.

EDIT: am now seeing on Facebook some comments from mutual friends indicating that this is perhaps not such a surprise for others after all. E.g. "I got to see some of that rage when we were all partying, definitely not a good trait."

I have seen this toxic behaviour, though the people who were involved did not move on to this sort of crime, but also did not get into ICE. It disgusted me at the time. Ask 10 girls, one will say yes type stuff, absolutely all about the willy. I think it must mean an inability to truly perceive others, which means no real understanding of their own consciousness.

Must be weird for anyone who knew him, or had lessons etc.

Of course but this guy rose through the ranks all the way to CSIA Lev 4. That is a lot over exposure along the way and indicates a pretty big systems failure at every step of the way and especially at that final qualification step.

PB would have hired on the cachet of the professional qualification which, to the best of my experience, is both skill and personality based. IMHE Lev 4 is a pretty conservative cohort.

I very much doubt APSI would pass him at that level if his rep was suspect. Unless things have changed, although not written, "professional behaviour" was always an important part of the process.

I think in these situations, anyone who knew the person, professionally or personally, would be questioning themselves rather a lot. Did I notice something, should I have done something (what?), should I have said something (to whom?)?

Other than another psycho of course, they would just think it was all great.

Just like when Chewy went off, everyone knew there was something a bit odd about him, but noone expected that.

For better or worse, CSIA certifications at all levels are centred entirely on the teaching & skiing exam tasks, nothing else. The examiners likely know nothing of the candidates except what's seen on courses or exams (for which one would be putting their best foot forward), especially for the Level 4 which happens only once per year in each region, with candidates and examiners all coming from afar. Professional resumes and references are neither provided nor considered for certification. The intent is to strive for an objective and impartial approach, given the constant accusations of favouritism and bias. So, as far as the Canadian certification body is concerned, you couldn't really say that it has "failed" given that it has performed exactly what the membership expects of it -- no more and no less. But certainly Williams will be expelled at this point, now that he has a criminal record.

You could perhaps legitimately say that employers, coworkers, friends and acquaintances have failed to combat misogynistic, antisocial behaviour. But it's an uphill battle against much of society, not just the ski industry.

The work psychologists may want to do a bit of soul searching if any were involved in the perps employment.

Team Bears suggest you may have missed something in the job interview!

Team Bears are sure it will not blemish the Canadian Accrediation Status....

Perp fit for purpose is a big fail. But life rolls on regardless....
