I observe obstructions on High Noon.
No aren't they jumps??
Appears to be snowing at Thredbo from 1500m up. Rain below. Perisher could do okay.
Looks like it raining at Smiggins though, 1650m ASL.
Hotham road was chaos. Very poor clearing efforts. just passed SES going up at high speed w emergency lights on
Been raining in the dandenongs last couple of hours. Satellite looking good, nice sweep of moisture moving across vic
More SES and paramedic cars heading Hotham at high speed. Am guessing GAR might be closed but nothing on Vicroads alerts
Apologies a bit of a tangent here (safety thought two cents!):
I observe that the Hotham Rd (via H'ille) really struggles on big snow / ice days - especially on changeover days (Friday and Sunday's where the vehicle traffic is higher). Noticed this on Sunday 24 July big wind/rain/snow event - hence returned via much safer, tad longer Omeo route!
Needs almost continuous road patrol from snowline( ~ Dargo gate up to village) to ensure newbies/ idiots are fitting chains and not crossed up in the fog ( ready to cause more accidents/cascades).
I note a lack of prevention on the mountain - mainly it seems reactive works once the carnage has begun. ( snow clearing & gate closure works excepted! - ie a people management patrol)!
Perisher ducking back into the negs and appears to be snowing again. -0.2C
Radar not looking good for BB or LM with those temps
Rain coming down hard in Melbourne CBD atm. Sideways for a moment there. Quite steady and heavy.
Fairly pissing down, camberwell
Canterbury same. Not cold though.
Been working in Mt Martha today, excavation.
Snowing fairly heavily at Perisher again.
Heavy rain in south east melb, gonna be lots of snow coming down tonight.
Very wet pm in southern subs of Melbourne. Moorabbin Apt Aws reports 10.2c and 9.5mm (mostly > 3pm) after a high ~14c. (Usually borderline temps for snow/rain). Staying optimistic.
I think above 1600m will be fine for snow tonight. Uppers still good for it (2/-8/-26 @850mb).
Snowing along the Alpine Way at Dead Horse Gap mid afternoon when driving through
Driving by Thredbo was a bit sleety and foggy
I observe fresh snow at LM again. Fingers crossed it's not rained away in the next few hours.
Nothing of consequence at Smiggins since around 6.00pm.
18cm new snow in the Buller snow guage
Buller village looks amazing on the cam, love it when those stairs disappear.
Baw Baw looking good too, 7 cms o/night, hopefully temps stay down so they get more today.
Buller quoting close enough to 50cms in the past 3 days.
That Baw Baw pic looks great. In the dark depths of Winter IMO
Radar looks good for NSW resorts to get a few more cm's this morning.
12cm at hotham so far
Well!!! Fark me what a weekend.
Firstly, getting to the top of Ridge by mistake on Saturday morning while the actual chair was being sorted for a slight tech issue saw me and a mate lay down first tracks down the side of Excellerator and then the bottom half of Rock Garden, great deep fresh dry pow. Then it was just lapping Kami's and Rock Garden till about lunch.
After lunch the debacle happened, and we saw a mass exodus of people only for Ridge to be left empty with new snow filling in the tracks, what!! Epic!
Sunday was slower, not as much new snow and not as light. More like mash than powder but there was also tons of fresh tracks to get amongst with non-existent crowds!!
So Saturday, dry light and deep, Sunday heavier but super fun.
Over the past three days (Resort Reported)
54cm at Buller
44cm at Falls
43cm at Hotham
17cm at DP
7cm at Baw Baw
66cm at Selwyn
40cm at Thredbo and Charlotte Pass
35cm at Perisher
I like my chances of Spring skiing now. Baw Baw's season could be kickstarted now...in late August. Better late than never though
Not shabby at all. Those falls were certainly at the upper end of expectations, especially at Buller.
Yes hearing how wet and sludgy it was yesterday was music to my ears. Barring a washout, which could happen this year, spring is on, and I'm happy.
Snowing steadily at Perisher this morning. I observe that my skis need a wax to truly appreciate the lovely powdery snow
Great welcome for me at Perisher today. Consistently snowing, sometimes heavily. Very light winds, nothing I'm aware of on wind hold. I'm doing my best to cover as much terrain as possible on Mt P. Currently picking different lines each run on the triple chair. Making fresh tracks and good stashes through trees. Boy, you grow some low branches here at Perisher!
I tell you what, leaving Hotham on Friday morning in a 100 km/h NW hairdryer with rain falling and a snow pack that was disappearing before my eyes I had my doubts about Spring skiing this season.
I think we'll be OK for early September.
It always gets worse before it gets better!
Cover at Buller is as good as I've seen in ages. Sleeting currently at Koflers.
Have they reopened Grimus yet? Was only key thing missing on the weekend for me. Saying that would love to be up there today getting down low on the Northside, love skiing amongst those massive trees.
looks like a few random cells popping up over Melton area heading straight towards the city and SE burbs.
I'm watching them roll across Port of Melbourne right now.
Can see them out of my window in Chelt. See what happens when they hit if there is much juice in them or not.
yes definitely made me rethink the walk at lunch time, but going anyway (in Sunshine West)
There is. Believe me.
Am on Grimus right now! Fantastic snow - I mean not Hokkaido powder, but ankle deep soft which doesn't catch the ski. Very little shrubbery on show.
I'm in Preston looks like it has some punch
Having a FB looksie on the phone.
Saw on the Vicco weather page shots of a funnel in Melton, someone else might be able to post (I cant on the work computer).
So yes your correct, must have some punch.
A bit of a rumble here in St Kilda rd.
Bit of lightning about as well.
back from weekend up hotham .. saturday was the goods , great conditions ( big crowds ) so spent the afternoon hiking and had a ball . Sunday was wet , just snow at the highest parts of the resort and very wet in the valleys . Unfortunatly its the areas down low expecially base of blue ribbon and the gully at the base of orchard that are stopping these areas being open ( an r*** not helping ) .. but still scored some great runs early on sunday before the snow got really wet
The problem they have is the length of the road , especially when snow down to low elevations .
There is people at all chain bays and there is people patrolling the road but when there is that many people going up or down the hill it is not possible to be everywhere at once .An i stay with the night supervisor up at hotham so i know first hand what they deal with . They do theyre best to be proactive but resources are stretched so thin in bad conditions ..
Sometimes people coming up the hill just need to be responsible for their actions .
