Himawari8 showing 2 concurrent lows, visible on the loop
Bigger one will soon be drawn in by the smaller, trailing low. The embedded low is doing an impressive job, hauling that cold air from the South. Mesmerising to watch as a loop.
I note on the Synoptic chart BOM has the new front moving at an incredible 45 knots too.
Buller is result of Karma .
Report from Dinner Plain and Hotham is its been snowing heavily since yesterday with well over 30cm so far from this system.
It is actually a result of geographical location, but you guys can be wanchors as much as you want
So I ask a serious question... wondering why Buller missed out last night despite Baw Baw AND Hotham/FC getting more (highly unusal Buller is the highest or lowest, normally in the middle) and a favourable N / NW (not W which sends frozen slop).
Great insights from the weather gurus here. Top shelf well done.
There also looks to be a third low just below out of the frame that could come into play. It really is a thing of beauty
Yeah, the main low.
Friends skiing Hotham this morning say it’s ‘snotting’ and has been all night and morning
25cm dust on crust at Fredbo.
Not bad for 6 hours of snowfall.
Mod note: no more Buller bashing please.
Trof hitting Kangaroo Island.
6mm for Cape Borda (Kangaroo Island) in the last hour.
50 knot (91 km/h) gusts.
Neptune Island (SA) almost getting wiped off the map in the last halfa...
Mt William down to -0.3 c wind gusts just started to increase.
Well above what BoM had in mind:
12:30pm forecasted wind.
There'll be some big water smashing that whole coastline over the next day or so, would be epic to see
Solid foot of fresh at Falls but heavy, wind packed and hard going.
Also freezing and extremely windy.
Wind has been building up all morning in Geelong. Currently 28 knots gusting to 34 knots out at Pt Richards.
It's getting there.
Been still in Nowra all morning, then half hr ago bang westerly gusting through now.
Heavy yes but hell its been a fun 4 hours!!
Look at the size of those flakes on the Thredbo cam!
Mid Station FB page.
And we back on...
Hey @Dave Clark , I touched on it a little earlier, but it really was luck of the draw last night. There was a defined W/NW’ly slide last night, it just so happens that Buller sat in the corridor of both moisture bands last night (red arrows), highlighted by the 24 hour rainfall obs plot.
It was an indiscriminate scenario.
I don't miss these systems.
This is 12:30pm..
haha touche. Almost as good as your +4C temp call yesterday.
Nailed it. fugg it.
Hahah we're even
Time to 'lift'.
Mind you, still above BoM's prog of 35-45 knots. Obs were at 45-49 knots (winds not gusts)
Yeah way above.
Access did well..
Flangs detected North of Kangaroo Island.
It's a live wire.
Ah, scale would help....
Neptune Island still clocking 41 knots.
Cape Jaffa clocking in at 996hPa.
About 25cm of fresh snow up top at Thredbo. Still snowing lightly all the way to the village. Had sago falling mid morning. It's definitely warming up in the village, lots of dripping rooflines and snow falling out of trees.
Cape Willoughby (SA) dropping > a bar an hour from 1004 hPa @ 8:30am to 998hPa @ 12:30pm.
3mm/hr precip rates across the board.
Far out main event still to come and look at the totals so far - this is going to be epic.
I observe my flight out of Sydney tonight might be a little bumpy...
With the second screen locked to observing the cams, Floyd ‘Wish you were here’ on loop, and awaiting the next pulse, in 25o Brisbane, what is the science behind the humps...? Pretty sad hey!
Wind in Sydney being a PITA for the painters outside our house.
Few drops now falling NB's
Indeed I was just looking at the sparks developing on the front over the water wondering how that will develop later this afternoon.
BINGO! I observe with the help of Floyd’s “Dark side of the moon” that there is a wind shadow, so the hump is caused by the ruler catching
the wind driven flakes... I’m truely a Ski.com. Cams tragic !
20cm of new snow at Guthega, knee shots in the tree drifts. All skied out now and blowing a gale. We await the next snow fall.
I thought it looked a little dark out
