Sun out and hail in Templestowe (Melbourne)
Mid coast will be firing
Some lightning being picked up now approaching in the heavy showers to the West of the Alpine area.
Might start seeing some Thundersnow soon at Falls/Hotham!
Adelaide Radar is well lit up.
And it’s only day one....
Multiple in-bounds slides at Hotham today.
Mary slide, Brockhoff trees, Hackers Horror!
Be careful out there!
The wind is starting to increase in Canberra and some ominous looking clouds are building to the south.
These two lows are spectacular.
Sitting in my usual windowside North Sydney seat, looking S and a little slither of West. Got dark earlier but blew by. Now quite clear to the South, but some lumping clouds coming in from the west. Just stood up to look Manly way, and some very feisty looking clouds off the coast. Feel a bit like the farmers, action around but nothing hitting us (except the wind)
I saw the one under village Hackers
Once the “powder” was packed down the skiing was much more enjoyable for me
Bit of grapple today only , let’s see how the next 12 hours go
there is only 1 road if you are coming to Smiggs. Folk left but came back up , road accident being cleared about 830am
Temperature must be dropping in Thredbo village, snow is settling on hand rails, cars and the road again.
Few cms in the last couple of hours in Perisher as well. Their snow stake cam is pretty good (mousover timestamps below).
Thredbo had a pretty good one of these a few years ago when we kept having those massive storms and snowmageddon was mentioned far too many times.
Was about 3 deg the whole day at my place north tas 350m, but still only 2 deg at Miena 1000m. Freezing cold sleety mist with no sun at all. Defiently bit of snow on the hills but I dont think there's much in this system for Tas.
Started snowing at Old Adaminaby around an hour ago.
Looking south towards Ramshead 5:00pm 8th August. Snow flurries rolling through. It's a thing of beauty.
From Hotham FB:
Big day there today, and bigger day there tomorrow.
20cm on the tables and a midget .....
Hotham would have been my pick for today.
I’m sure Perisher will get it’s turn tomorrow.
Share around the snowy love.
Interesting day at Thredbo. It dumped some of the heaviest snow I have seen 7am to 9am. Big fat flakes. When we got up high there was about 25cm accumulation on the old base but the fluffy nature of the new snow meant you were skiing on the ice underneath. By the afternoon this problem had gone due to work nd and a bit more new snow but still apparent down low in untracked areas.
For mine that fluffy layer from this morning will be a weak point in the snowpack. It was sliding off the ice base in mini slides in places. If it gets windslab over the top of it is be cautious. Not really an issue inbounds due to it being ski packed.
Probably about 5cm new snow during the day.
Current updated chart as of 4:00pm;
The posed hockey stop in pow shots crack me up .... frothcam.
I wish they turned properly too, but it’s what gets the people up the hill.
Snowboarding to represent
Latest Severe Weather Warning for Vicco forecasts strongest winds for Central areas (incl. Melbs) between 0300hrs and 0900hrs tomorrow morning.

Once the centre of that low scraps Portland, the alps are in striking distance to its tight moisture bands.
Game on in Vic resorts circa 10/11pm IMO.

Next bit of goodness about to hit the majors.
Interesting comments..we may be looking at a serious issue as the event processes
I think off-piste, the issue is already present.
Humm.. a revisit of the ski.com avalanche 50 year anniversary Roslyn Wesche post maybe worthy?
I grew up in Woden.
Back in the 70's started skiing.
Was such a buzz looking out over the Brindies at that " cloudscape "
Could smell the snow, would be out the back shed waxing and sharpening.

Just moved a couple hours East.
South P cam looking good
looks like it’s puking on village bowl cam at falls.
Headlight straw on the Barry Way near the Jindy airport. Must be vomiting up the hill.
20yrs ago avalanche was not really mentioned. Now that everyone has AST 1 it's a popular term.
Bigger issues are getting lost, skiing into a creek or falling off a cornice in a white out.
Attention to the right detail is the primary safety parameter.
Light snow atm DP , couple of cents
Road white again ..
And more peeps are travelling , more heading " oob" .
Gets the awareness up.
More peeps out back , more likely of issues when they shouldn't be out back...frothing.
Self included.(tho I am on the conservative side)
Agree most injuries and worst are cornice collapse..
Stay on topic
Baw Baw getting some more love .
I observe, beautiful cold core low pressure cyclogenesis ❤️
Looks like the winds have done some damage to power infrastructure in SA.
