These two Aussie sisters are on the home stretch of their Kickstarter, with less than 48hrs left of the campaign. They're making a final push to get the funding across the line for their film project.

Support aussie skiers, support women in sport, support ski movies, support the vibe.
Give that they may make a kick arse ski movie.
There are kick start rewards for backers, so you get something back!

    Finding The Line

Two sisters will use their professional extreme skiing careers and mountain pursuits as a vehicle to understand fear in all its guises.

Good luck to the girls, hope they reached their target.

But am I the only person who can't help but think Kickstarter/crowdfunding simply = too tight to pay for it yourself?

I think it's more the case that if you want to get something funded these days you don't necessarily need to be at the mercy of a big corporation who will take the lions share of the profits.

And maybe sometimes a kickstarter is a way of projecting future demand to help sell a project to more traditional backers?

I'm sure that's been done before.

@MickChopps...nah, I think you are right. Regardless of how they dress it up and spin it this is just a low risk way of getting what you want with others paying for it. If they were serious they would earn the money themselves then risk it on the film. Then they could experience the fear of risking their own hard earned and film that. If it did well then good on them. If it tanked well that is ok too, at least they were willing to take a chance. This way there is no real risk and no real fear and they can pretend to be looking at "fear" while they promote themselves via the film and have fun doing it! Course they could also take a risk and pay the investors with a return!
Maybe I'll do a porn flick and dress it up as a psychological study of human intimacy! :D:p:D

    Australians are a bit non-altruistic
a while ago I contributed to crowdfunding for the Melbourne band Saskwatch to help them get to Glastonbury
    I got a CD and a t-shirt
this time I've coughed up for the Segals
    I'm getting a beanie
not that I particularly need anything, because I'm happy to help
I've done others too, and I can't see anything wrong with it

I donated to it, I went for a nice print that I can put up in my office.

I crowdfunded an electronic device a little while ago as well, it was clearly superior to everything else on the market, won't get it for a few weeks yet but don't need it until then either.

Owning a small business I like the idea of funding without selling the farm or risking your house. But I guess I haven't been burned by a 'vapourware' crowdfund dud either.....

I think kickstarter and other such options are quite good in fact. Provided it is done with the genuine intent on returning value to investors. Otherwise it just becomes a charity con...chancers after bucks and saps donating so they can virtue signal and get some self-administered therapy. If it focuses on value and results and accountability then it will work. If it just becomes a free cash hole in the wall then it will fail.

    I put in
I did similar for a climbing film that took longer and changed significantly than 'envisioned ' but was good and fun and done by a real person trying to live the dream while I drudge on in an office.

They tend to be lower on the classic equipment label linger shots as well.

For the price of a few mags or a couple of lunches it seems like a nice thing to do. Lots of the deals were basically some gear at a reduced price with a donation component. Seems win-win.

As they should. I often wonder if ASIC cruises sites like Kickstarter.

It's a view and valid at that.

I think though you underestimate how much real work it takes to line up all the sponsors who likely donated or substantially underwrote all the gifts crowdfunders purchased. My 'donation' was barely $5 more than just buying something I liked anyway.

Plus, there is the work required to be good enough skiers to make filming them even a viable proposition. And whilst the girls have chosen a life less ordinary - it's not one that is in any way 'financially secure'. That's the real bravery imo.

They did a guidance note on crowd funding. It's OK providing its not an equity raise.

In which case it is a feelgood exercise for the contributors. Not suggesting that is necessarily a bad thing but potentially open to abuse.

I'd rather give money for this than a number of other worthy [sic] causes
my bug bear is charities like World Wision - they use the money for missionary work ie evangelising, controversially in cases like the early 2000s tsunami
