We had a great week with a great small group in Chamonix in Feb/Mar this year so we're backing up for another.

I've known for a long time that Chamonix is a drawcard, it's at the apex of what lifted skiing can offer, and when you combine those lifts with some human powered effort this region can provide some of the most unique experiences possible on skis.

Through speaking to skiers just about every day of the year I know that skiing in the big mountains is a growing interest, and a lot of people are feeling a bit 'done' with Japan and North America.

To make the most of Chamonix I knew you needed two main things to make this happen - qualified mountain guides and transport - big mountains mean big weather and being able to move around is key.

So we put together a package which is an all-inclusive week in Chamonix, featuring a fully catered chalet, guiding and van transportation. The formula is clearly a winner, and with some challenging weather we proved that it's the best way to experience the area.

Here's a taste of what we got up to: https://blog.aussieskier.com/category/trip-reports/chamonix-2017/

We decided to push the trip back a couple of weeks this year, as we feel that while we skied some fantastic powder this year, the real drawcard of the area is the high glacial terrain, which requires clearer weather. While this date change doesn't guarantee good weather, and I've skied plenty of powder in Cham in mid-late March, it does improve the odds.

All the details are here: https://adventures.aussieskier.com

If you're an experienced ski tourer, or a strong off-piste skier who is looking to begin ski touring, please get in touch for an experience of a lifetime.

(FYI Ski Package promotions are only allowed on the forums when accompanied by a Ski Ad, this has been purchased: http://ski.com.au/holidays/packages...-Off-Piste-Skiing-Mar-11-17-2018-ski8062.html )

Here's a quote from one of our guests this year:

My partner and I signed up for the 2017 aussieskier 7-day adventure to Chamonix after having wanted to explore the region for many years. We knew we would need guides to be safe, and to allow us a full shot at backcountry skiing in the southern French alps, and we also wanted the convenience of a ‘set and forget’ arrangement.

We had extensively ski-toured Australia leading into it, but we felt the scale and magnitude of the region really did warrant something outside our typical go-it-alone take on these things.

It was undoubtedly the very best way we could have experienced the region as first time Cham-visitors.

To start, the accommodations were amazing. A grand, self-catered chalet in town. So French-alps! Warm, comfortable, and perfectly equipped to on-board the exhausted remnants of long days out. And placed in the nook of the massif. The views were astounding. The meals were unbelievable. The company was kindred.

The aussieskier team had carefully crafted an itinerary of seminal ‘must-do’s’ which were obviously contingent on conditions. Frankly, we had them pretty bad. The worst season in forever, and then a couple of storms on hard pack. Despite a set of conditions that were less than perfect, the guides selected the most amazing mountain experiences of my life.

We spent six days skiing in both the obscure Italian backcountry, as well as some southern French big-hitters. The Vallee Blanche was remarkable. And even as remarkable was the tour out the back of an Italian micro-resort when conditions were rough.

What we really loved, and what my partner and I didn’t feel we could achieve on our own, was that lovely sense of assurance in knowing we were in the very best hands (our guides were hand selected over many years of experience with our aussieskier hosts – they were both true, knowledgeable mountain people). We also loved the complete absence of needing to think about anything. We didn’t need to drive anywhere, cook any meals, make any plans. We had full trust in our hosts, and they more than delivered.

What's the correct term for discriminating against snowboarders? Slidist?

    Looks great.

Crossed paths with these guys a few times this year, look to run a quality operation: https://www.mcnabsnowboarding.com/

Also I gave @smitty484 the number of a guide I saw in a cable car with a split. Turns out to be FWT champion Babs Charlet.

Anyone thinking of this should just stop thinking and do it.

Frankly I found it life changing, and have been stuck in basically a sufferfest of existential crisis since returning to Australia (why am I stuck in Wollongong and not the French Alps? How can I get back? Do I sell my house?).

I'll post some more later - have to go out (to my Alliance Francaise French class!!!!).

Anyone with any questions that want to PM, I am happy to give straight up honest responses.

The +1 and I would like to return - but as we added our weeks in Cham into a 'bring along three kids' trip afterwards we spent a fair bit of coin!! It's a possible though...

CM and Mrs CM are also wonderful hosts.

France and the alps are magnificent, unfortunately French policy / attitude towards immigrants (no matter where you are from) not so. Learn the language well, so you can understand the law of the land, its politics and how it's culture works before anything else if you wish to live there. Truth is......it's not a bed of roses in France for those that live there, regardless of the latest / current terrorist issues.
This reality check has nothing to do with the fact .................the alps / Chamonix rocks!!!

I spent a few days there in summer a few years back and it is a fantastic part of the world. It left a huge impression on me and if I was a lot younger and fitter and perhaps a better skier, I would love to join Carveman on his tour.

I was there in July and I think they had almost a metre of snow in one night!

Yes it's definitely the plan. We want to keep it somewhat low-key & manageable so it doesn't detract from our 'day job' & maintain the quality as well.

No way am I going to be able to do this this year... but would love to be able to do something like this at some point in my life...

As I'm not an "experienced ski tourer", and for this sort of thing like to steer to the side of caution, what do you mean a "strong off-piste skier"?

You'd hate to be the one person who comes at finds you hold everyone else up...

Well done @CarveMan for living the dream... somewhat jealous x1000

Strong off piste; imo, not particularly fussed by steep &/or tight on crap snow. Not necessarily fast nor perfect technique but solid and safe when needed.

This, and you need to be the kind of person that is happy skiing ungroomed runs for the bulk of a ski day.

The tour isn't aimed at superstar skiers, as there aren't many of them and they tend to sort themselves out.

Just need to be someone who has a bit of resilience and a sense of adventure.

If your ideal ski day is rollerblading on groomed runs then it's not going to be a great time.

include happy disposition, sense of awe, ability to adsorb the awesome, a good dose of irreverence, happy to skate for a few kms at the end or ski the variable forest out, sense of adventure and .... appreciate the healing powers of gherkins and cheese.

Carve tour hosts are the very very best

    Awesome. ;)

I'll join you for the one following this if you're still doing them then.

For obvious reasons I can't plan anything at the moment.

I also promise to bring bad in-jokes like the above from 1992 along with me.
