Looks like back burning is carried out regularly to keep intensity low. I saw a handful up there last week when I worked out where they head at sunset. Cute buggers.

I just got a text saying that most schools in the Southern Highlands are closed, including catholic/private schools due to the upgraded fire threat (inclusion of the illawarra in the Catastrophic fire danger warning). So that list is much larger as that only lists government schools. eg. Chevalier College in my area is closed tomorrow and is by no means in a densely bushed area and pretty much has no risk of bushfire. However there has been 2 occasions in the last 10 years where students who live out in yerrinbool, Bargo etc have been stuck at school due to Hume Highway road closures due to fire. So yes there may be no direct bushfire risk for the school, but students/parents being stranded etc becomes an issue

one of the guys here from the northern beaches got a text from his kids school saying it was open, but understood parents if wanted to keep kids at home and to just let the school know in the usual way if the kid wasn't coming.

i would rather be over cautious and go with a bit of over kill. this evenings activities at my house will include cleaning out that gutters that have more grass growing in them than the backyard has. we are a few houses back from the bush.....but at the top of the gully....and it hasn't burnt there in forever. from what i know it's barely accessible by the rfs.

When you have the council complaining about the BAL rating you got was to low and they are upset about the number of trees that were felled (it turns out no one at council read the reports submitted to council. Yet the guys who did the bushfire report, environmental report who also works for another council as their environmental person, the local RFS commanders etc are all telling wait to council goes and then we'll talk to you about extending the fire protection zone to being something safer, you start to realise that something is screwy with council.

Further our shed is surrounded by trees, some 30+m tall but are say 12m away, you can't do a thing about them.

I was out kayak fishing hindz dam Saturday after noon and there was 2 crop dusting aircraft skimming the lake refilling just to my south , fighting the Lower Beechmont fire. Very cool to watch , return trip was less than 5 mins. Flying in tandem about 500m apart.
Yes they closed all ramp access to boats , I didn’t know at the time...as I don’t launch at ramps. BTW Saratoga and bass where going nuts. Awesome arvo

There's some schools here right in the scrub and a few roads that'd be bad to be trapped on.

Apparently dobroyd hd is at risk but my kids school right nearby is open, thus far. Wind direction and burbs should keep it ok enough I guess? @kylep

But aren't the trees part of your semi rural living plan ?

Where we are in Ryde we are 25m or one house block from massive trees in a reserve with BAL 19. Tis what it is.

Anything with a tree on it seems to have closed at 3pm today. North head, west head, Collins Beach, all of kuringai, etc.

Watch Mona Vale Rd close at some stage.

I'm going to try to say this in a nice way. People who are preparing NOW, and not over the past weeks/months/years, are NOT PREPARED AT ALL. It is just so infuriating for everyone involved that it is taking these conditions to make people take action. Please, do what you can tonight. But please, please, take this as the kick to do the proper preparation so that the house is never in that condition at this time of year. I have seen plenty of houses over the years which are rows of houses away from bush, and have sustained serious damage from embers blown some distance.

    Not out of the ordinary

    NPWS Home page:
    State-wide park closures

    For 11 November 2019:

Due to the extreme fire conditions across much of New South Wales, MOST national parks and reserves in NSW from the Queensland border to Victoria are closed. This means no public access at all and includes tracks, trails, campgrounds and picnic areas.

View a full list of park closures and alerts, including any exceptions. A total fire ban remains in place for all NSW national parks due to extreme fire danger.

Not going to give any specific advice. It's going to be a bad day anywhere a fire starts. Have had to respond to Dobroyd head before, that coastal heath goes up like crazy. Same stuff at North Head. Was out there a few weeks ago and there's plenty of fuel there to be an issue. As with anywhere in Sydney, anything that chokes any of the major roads will cause big flow on effects.

Here is the final draft Bush Fire Danger Map for NB Council lower section. Not much is particularly away from the danger. Stories from the last major conflagration had fire impacting well into the lower areas.

They won't close Mona Vale Rd unless there is an actual fire. Same with Wakehurst Parkway,

Closing Kuringai NP is a regular event and the incidence of fires there has dropped significantly since they started doing it.

    it's not just the temp.

    its fn(temp,humidity,wind,fuel,what's already alight)

I'm sure there are others who can put more science on that

Correct me if I'm wrong but I heard every sporting field in the state is closed as of this afternoon. Summer soccer tonight was cancelled because of it. If this is correct, I think this is completely excessive. Also, closing all the schools means more children will be at home, and with employers not closing their own businesses, parents will be forced to leave children at home by themselves. I think this "drastic action" was a little too drastic to the point where the whole purpose of the action has been defeated.

Maybe so, but, as an example, look at Bobin school which burned over the weekend. A small school surrounded by bush and with very limited road access. If that school had burned on a school day there would have been a lot of very dead kids.

It's mad when the fires aren't as bad as they fear
it's smart if it kicks off as badly as they fear

trouble is no one knows which bits of the danger areas will kick off.

the code red days we have had since the system was introduced have been nowhere near as bad as black saturday. maybe the bar is too low. maybe it is just right. I really don't know

this is what vic cfa says
Code Red (and Catastrophic in other Australian states) is the highest level of rating in Victoria and it signifies the worst conditions for grassfires or bushfires. A Code Red Fire Danger Rating means that if a fire were to start:
    • it will be uncontrollable, unpredictable and fast moving
    • fire services will find it difficult to put out
    • there is a high likelihood that people in the path of a fire will be killed or seriously injured
    • homes are not designed or constructed to withstand in these conditions - even the best prepared homes will not be safe
    • leaving high risk bushfire areas the night before a Code Red Day or early in the morning of a Code Red Day is the safest option for your survival – do not wait and see
If the science says that those are the conditions then it would be irresponsible for gov not to take the measures they have.

Yes should have mentioned that I absolutely agree with closing schools in these locations. Just not the complete blanket closure which seems to have happened.

Not whinging just stating a point! I'm fairly certain there is no law that states that, but my point is is that some parents will be left in a pretty hard situation due to the school closures. Tomorrow is going to be horrendous, so as long as people are aware, people will be safe

Edit: BOM have added a small chance of a shower tomorrow which may come with the change in the afternoon, so fingers crossed it comes earlier than expected!!

    Everyone.

Extreme fire danger...no sorry....CATASTROPHIC! Hey I have an idea. Let’s create thousands of unsupervised children.

Nevermind. I can see you all love the hysteria as much as the media. I’m all for preparing, and I have, but what’s going on is not going to prevent anything. If shit catches alight there will still be chaos, but instead with unsupervised children on the loose.

One, I didn't say that it was state wide, but yes there a lot more schools closed than what is stated on the lists. And, two I did ask to be corrected if I was wrong on that fact, so sorry:D

Catastrophic is a name for the next level on the scale. Black saturday was off the scale. Afterwards they decided that the scale didn't go high enough to denote the difference between what people expected with extreme conditions and what happened on that day. You debate the wording chosen (and the threshold), but the concept of a higher danger level is right

I don't know about you, but given the choice between a day at work and a day protecting children, hearth and home I know what I would choose. To quote a former PM, anyone who sacks anyone for doing that is a bum.

Anyone know an adult with some time to supervise said kids?

You’re right - high temps and strong winds are not unprecedented. But add near record low moisture content and humidity in single digits and get back to me.
