Is it worth noting that California has just been reamed by fires in "city suburbs" (again)?

Fun watching the helis and planes doing their thing through the Hollywood Hills on Flight Radar, but I wouldn't wanna be there.

Gas bottles are designed to vent under extreme heat - ie: they slowly let the gas out, rather than exploding. So long as the vent is pointed away from any flammable objects (eg: the house) they should be OK. Shut them off. The 45 kg ones should be OK as they would be properly installed so that the vent points away. Maybe put the 9kg ones well away from the house, but not with the horses!

Now, that venting gas can of course catch fire, so you don't want it where you may have to run through the shooting flame to escape. (I sheltered and gave/organised others to give first aid to a woman who had to do that - she ended up spending a week in an induced coma in a burns unit, and still bears horrific scars today).

Plastic fuel drums - in the shed or the house. The ones containing fuel that you may need for your fire pump, keep in an accessible place, but sheltered. If the shed or house catches fire, you're buggared wherever you have them stored.

Speaking of horses, if all turns to shit and you can't evacuate them for whatever reason, open all the gates and leave them to their own devices. I can tell you a story of a group of yearling race horses that the local racing stud couldn't fit in their stone stables. They had to be left out with their mentor older horse. After the fire (all in the stables survived) the yearlings couldn't be found. A couple of days later, they reappeared in single file, being led by mentor horse, all them had somehow survived. (they may have lost one - can't remember). Similarly, on another property, some miniature horses somehow survived when their owners were stuck in Melbourne. OTOH, I know of people who lost their horses, but it's uncanny how some of them can apparently outwit the fire and survive.

    Best of luck.

    Thanks Teckel.

1am we're pretty packed. A couple of things to grab as we leave. Horse float set up as if we're going off for a horse event for a few days, meals made up etc. Cats (grumble) are ready to grab. My regatta boat is packed and ready with bonus horse stuff packed in the cockpit.

Pity to be abandoning the house, this will be our third night in the house. I'll need to pack up my computer which I've just moved up from the shed, but I need to do half an hour's work for clients tonight before heading to bed.

Property is as sorted as it will be in the immediate future. I would love to had another 12 months to "manage" the property but we're just been flat out jumping through hoops to get a house. At least the gutters on the shed aren't overflowing with leaf matter. I'll try to remove some of the leaf matter around the shed in the morning.

Now to off to work for a while.

Wow @AlanD so soon after moving in. It's a weird feeling to have leave your house behind as the flames start to appear and I don't wish that on anyone.

The outlook is daunting and I hope it turns out less severe than predicted. I'll be distracted today thinking about home. Virtually all of my Aussie family and friends live in the swath predicted to have the most severe winds.

Finally a word to @Legs Akimbo and @ralf_plough: stay safe, you lovable idiots.

    Hoping today is a nothingburger.

In 1994 87% of the Lane Cove national park was burnt, with 13 houses being lost. In 2002 an arsonist did a job on it as well. That's a proper city national park, surrounded by some wealthy suburbs. The hype could all be overkill, but if fire breaks out in those places it's proximity to homes makes it really troublesome.

Meanwhile here in Auckland it's storms and rain......as it always is when I visit.

    Exactly.

And if a fire kicks off again in that area today do you think it would be more or less helpful to have hundreds of parents trying to evacuate their kids from school as emergency services are trying to get through?

Driving to Wollongong then Picton and back to Wollongong today for a funeral. Not overly keen on it but will be extremely vigilant and pull the plug at the first sign of trouble.

Get your best firefighting kit on folfs. Fongs, singlet and boardies (preferably quick dry). A beer in one hand will help with hydration. Its going to be hot fighting them fires so dress cool you know.

Arsonists will be frothing over all these pre-warnings on the best day to light a fire.

I remember those 94 fires so well. A mate at West Lindfield lost houses either side of him, they were OS at the time. A family friend lost their house at Lane Cove. I was down prepping my sisters place at Illawong and watched as the fires slowly moved up their side of the valley but watched house after house explode on the Bangor Ridge side, it was this fire that jumped the Georges River into Janelli. We spent a few days helping prep house and helping the RFS run hoses through the bush on different sides of Illawong as different blazes moved past the suburb.

Oh, just a tip for anyone who may be caught in really deep shit: Your safest place to be is in the black. If it's black it's burnt, and won't burn again. If you're caught in your car and you can't keep going, seek shelter for you and your car on the lee side of a solid building/brick wall/even the bottom of a cliff - if it's on the leeside of the fire. Then huddle down low on the floor of the car if you can, to avoid radiant heat.

Well, there's the last remaining wild stands of Wollemi pines in there somewhere. But yes for people and property and the water catchment it's really about the least harmful spot in the BM's to have a fire

For those of you who do live close to where a fire is or may start, please check in at the end of the day to let us all know you're safe.
