Yep definitely. Didn't mean to downplay the damage to flora and fauna, spending much of my time enjoying the National Park its heart breaking to witness.

The cops will have been pro-active with known or suspected firebugs over the last couple of days. A quiet knock on the door and a friendly "We're watching you". They have been doing it for a few years now.

Once it beyond there the next stop is us at Mangrove Mountain.

All good here at this stage, pretty clear considering.

If nothing else it's been a really good practice run and changed our priorities to get certain jobs done which should have been higher than painting the inside of the house.

A the risk of going backwards i saw this on an email today.

Sounds like there is strict criteria in place and a blanket closure has not happened.

"Although [insert PS here] is in a Bush fire prone area, we are not rated as ‘high risk’ and therefore we are not required to cease operation. Only schools that are in a bush fire prone area and are rated at ‘high risk’ will need to cease operation if there is an immediate threat to the school or if the FDR is Catastrophic.

[insert school} PS is required to have a very detailed Bush Fire Emergency Plan that has been established in consultation with the Department of Education’s Work Health and Safety (WHS) Directorate and the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS).

We will continue to be in contact with the WHS Directorate and the RFS to closely monitor the situation."

I've got a feeling if there are no major blazes within the Catastrophic area today, they'll be alot of people complaining the authorities "cried wolf"

How different would the Canberra fires have been, if they had simply bulldozed a major firebreak between the fire, and town? The fire was burning for about a week before it ended up in town.

But if they had, and the wind didnt come up and make it do what it did......

Clear skies just North of Newcastle right now - but the wind is hot, dry and gusty as predicted.

Really happy for the decision which was made. In reality this call was as much about the RFS being currently nearly fully stretched and could not respond to any additional significant fires.

I thought it was purely math?
If more than 10% of plots (taken over 6km square regions of a LGA) were forecast to exceed 100FDR. A catastrophic fire warning is raised.

When I was a kid I can remember many discussions about the best way to fight fires. We lived on the south coast and it was always discussed that "up north" they fight fire with water but "down south" they fight fires with dirt. Whenever there was a fire within a few hours all the heavy earth moving equipment (Particularly bulldozers) would be loaded up from my families business and be shipped off to fight the fires. They would put in firebreaks and then literally bulldoze the fire back on itself and smother it with dirt (I remember very scientific discussions about having to judge when the fire would move slowest - downhill, vegetation type etc) Same when they were back-burning - the equipment would be loaned out for the weekend, containment lines put in with the dozer then the fire smothered with dirt to stop it. Water was just not readily enough available or reliable enough. All changed now with water bombing aircraft but I still think it would be beneficial to better maintain fire roads.

Wind can carry embers 30kms or so. That would need some firebreak.

Not saying firebreaks are not part of the solution, but they are not a panacea. Probably more useful in large slow moving fires than dry windy days.

Just dust and a bit of smoke haze here. Fully packed other than a few loose items at one of the doors. The shed (red roof building down the hill) is as prepared as it's going to get (4 wheel barrow loads of leaf matter from the back side of the shed).

I suppose I should show some photos of the place for those that don't follow the farm thread. We purchased the property about 14 months ago and have been living in the shed for the last 12 months. I put a bathroom and kitchenette in the shed. A couple of months ago we finally got approval to put a modular house on the block. 6 week build time and we've been doing stuff since it arrived to get approval to move in last week. Still need to compete the painting and getting the flooring installed.

Geez man the thought of living there gives me the heebie jeebies. Have you given any thought to cutting down some of those trees closer to your house (after you're out of danger that is) ?

Council is already upset about the number of trees we've removed. Now that council is gone a few more might disappear. The real worry is the shred as that has our off the grid solar system on/in it, plus a heap of equipment etc. Monster trees that will wipe out the shed if the fall or even drop a major limb.
