Prologue

It was a 3 day long weekend here for Canberra Day so I went looking for a suitably located walk. Much of the bushwalking in ACT is still affected by closures due to the bushfires.

Enter the 11 Highest Peaks walk around the NSW Main Range.

I prepared my gear for 3 nights away, one on the Jindy North Shore and 2 on the range.

54D567F6-034B-4EE8-9348-15B2F844EB50.jpeg

The route planned was counter clockwise starting at Charlotte Pass.

2CC41440-EB9A-4F1B-834C-134D89525526.jpeg

This route would bag the following peaks:
  • Mount Twynam: 2195m
  • Tenison Woods Knoll: 2134m
  • Carruthers Peak: 2145m
  • Mount Northcote: 2131m
  • Alice Rawson Peak: 2160m
  • Mount Townsend: 2209m
  • Abbott Peak: 2145m
  • Mount Kosciuszko: 2228m
  • Ethridge Ridge 2180m
  • Rams Head North: 2177m
  • Rams Head: 2190m

The first night away involved beers with @dawooduck on the Jindy North Shore.

upload_2021-3-9_7-43-49.png

A late minute change was needed as word on the hill from @Untele-whippet was that Charlotte Pass was the hosting venue for an alpine running race and the closest you could drive up the hill was to Perisher. On Saturday you could catch an event bus to Charlotte Pass but that would be totally useless to me on Monday after a 3 day walk; ie me at Charlotte Pass and the car at Perisher.

So I decided to start at Thredbo instead and walk up from there.

It's correct. The overlay of the gpx track is covering it. Photographic evidence will be produced ;)

You've just inspired me to upload the aerial imagery for the snowies into my now 6 month old GPS. I've actually used it for a few jobs of late and it was handy being able to upload aerial imagery and some GPX'd GIS files identifying routes and properties out in areas with no distinguishing features.

For those without the time, fitness and expertise, there's an awesome 20km day walk you can do where you can see most of those peaks. Catch the Thredbo chair up and the hike finishes at Charlotte Pass where you get picked up and taken back to Thredbo. From memory the only peak bagged was Kosci. Hiked close to Blue Lake ??

Ethridge Ridge is a doddle if you want to bag a second peak in addition to Kosci on that walk. It's the hill just behind the Rawson's Pass toilets.

Nice walk. The only one I've never got around to bagging is Ethridge. Been past the base so many times though.

Day 1 - 0/11 Peaks Bagged

Today’s plan was to have breakfast at the bakery, walk up the Merrits Nature Trail, have morning tea at the Eagles Nest, stroll across to Charlotte Pass and finish up hiking up to Twynam.

upload_2021-3-9_16-25-12.png

The Merrits Nature Trail is a very pleasant stroll that takes you from the bottom of Thredbo up to the top of the Kosciusko chair if you are too cheap to buy a ticket. It’s about 4km.

B6F66C53-5A85-447F-BA87-547A8F26947A.jpeg

Given I didn’t want to get to Charlotte Pass too early I took the opportunity to refuel at the Eagles Nest.

38B63268-E730-4638-A0F1-8A6CCF8C62E8.jpeg

Then it was time to start working off those calories.

Absolutely glorious walking conditions. Closer to Charlotte Pass it looked like someone had kicked an ants nest and they were all scurrying down the hill. Actually it was all the alpine runners doing their thing.

The track took me to the top of Stilwell.

Day 2 - 7/11 Peaks Bagged

Day 2 dawned to a brilliant sunrise.

5BE02269-7303-41A7-AA0A-BDFE19D813A7.jpeg

Overnight it was fairly chilly so I had to sleep with my water filter. If that freezes the locking ring warps and it becomes useless.

Strolling up to Twynam was very cruisy.

Around Twynam there are several small weather stations.

It was a relatively short walk over to peak #2, Watsons Crag Tenison Woods Knoll. Spectacular views along the way.

Then it was back onto the Main Range track for Carruthers.

By the time I wandered up Northcote I was feeling peckish. I do like a nice view with lunch.

By this stage I was wondering about where to camp overnight. The wind was coming in from the NW so I thought on the lee of Abbott peak would work out well. So I loaded up with extra water then I hit this.

Note to self, carrying an extra 3-4 kg of water up Mt Townsend is just silly. Quite a scramble over rocks to get to the top and the most difficult of the peaks to climb.

The climb up to Abbott peak was relatively tame in comparison.

Today was going to be questionable weather wise. The sunrise backed this up.

Then across Wilkinsons Valley to start the boring walk up Kosci. Yes I know it’s the tallest, but it’s still a boring climb.

It was most enjoyable looking back over to the hills I scaled yesterday.

3DEF4BB6-F9D4-4DC0-BFDA-1826609E83B5.jpeg

From left to right Mount Du Faur, Abbott Peak, Mt Townsend, Alice Rawson Peak and Mt Mueller.

After a quick pit stop at the Rawson Pass toilets, didn’t I time that well, it was just a short hop to Etheridge Ridge.

AA5D119A-57B1-4E7E-8F0A-13DAAFFD03B8.jpeg

North Rams Head was next and caused me a bit of bother. I tried coming at it from the west side and thought better of it and climbed back down. I then went around to the eastern side and found a far easier way up.

Last hill was Rams Head.

Overall about 50km distance and 2400m up and down.

Bravo, weather has been warm last couple days compared to last week. I think you hit Tension Woods Knoll after Twynam, Watson's further west (and lower).
