Glad I can check in on this thread again - I was on mobile data for a while there and had to avoid this and @Doonks TR as they would smash my quota, but back in the land of Wifi now - looking great Heinz!

When it's sunny it is great sitting outside on the terraces.

Today though wasn't one of those days, but then it's not too bad inside as well.

Thu Mar 26 - Bad Hofgastein, Badgastein

Stayed closer to home today, starting with the Schlossalmbahn. No sun at all, so even fewer people about. Higher elevations were shrouded in fog and stayed that way pretty much all day. Was also snowing lightly on and off but no real accumulation.

So started off with a couple of cable car runs while snow conditions were still very good. Best skiing was mid elevations below the treeline & fog and still firm snow. Snow towards the valley was ok until about midday when it started getting quite heavy. Riding the gondolas though meant getting up high into the fog so still always had to feel way down a bit to start with. Did several runs to the bottom while conditions were still ok.

Other priority was getting checking the cricket score in the World cup game against India every time I got in the gondola. Was pretty happy at how that progressed.

Did most of the skiing today on the Badgastein side and stayed that side for lunch before heading back.

Late in the day I stopped briefly on the side of the run when some gut came up ask asked me the way down to Bad Hofgastein. Pointed him in the right direction then n,oticed the accent. As it turned out he was from Adelaide. The first Australian I have seen in the 2 weeks I have been here. He on a family trip around Europe and had decided to take a punt on a few days of skiing.

I then went for one last ride up in the cable car and a long, slow ski back down to the valley - conditions markedly different from this morning.

No skiing pictures today - firstly with the fog and secondly I had already covered this area on Monday.

Also certainly not a day for the Sonnenterrasse. So in here for lunch.

When I looked at the weather report for the region a few days ago, thought Thursday looks the best day to go to Salzburg to do the laundry :D

Fri Mar 27 - Bad Hofgastein, Badgastein

Probably the last ski day of the trip and a return to winter conditions. Conditions today quite a mixture and somewhat challenging. Was quite overcast and colder than previous days. Was a bit of new snow overnight, maybe 2cm mid level, 5cm higher up?

Started off again with a couple of runs from the Schlossalm cable car. Visibility was very limited on upper mountain, worse than yesterday. Took that very slowly just going from one run marker to the next. Improved once you got to around tree level. Headed again over to the Badgastein side via Angertal to try the lower elevations.

Snow was quite variable though, wind blown up high and often over the old refrozen chopped up snow. It may have been better off-piste but wasn't going there with zero vis.

Lower down there were a few runs with a couple of cms on freshly groomed pistes which were ok, otherwise it was just on top of the very hard pack. Down further it was a bit of new snow mixed with the old slush. So was difficult to find a good balance.

Around 12 I was wondering where the day was heading, was thinking maybe an early lunch but then found a nice little bowl off the Burgstal T-bar where new snow had collected, maybe 10cm or so, was still untouched and visibility was good. So had some fun in there for the next hour. The run was only short but that just meant I ended up lapping it 7 times (according to the Skline website).

Quick stop for lunch, then had another look up high but vis was as bad as before and wind had picked up as well. Returned to my powder bowl but the weather had closed in there as well, so headed back to Bad Hofgastein and pretty much same deal, so one last cable car and a top to bottom run which wasn't too bad.

So hardly an awesome day but I did eventually get a few powder runs for the trip.

The forest trail down to Angertal (cross over area) from the Bad Hofgastein side freshened up a little and a dusting on the trees.

On the smoking issue I hadn't really given it much thought before, but yes it is true that restaurants are not smoke free - there are usually smoking and non smoking rooms although they aren't always clearly indicated.

At lunch a Dutch group at the next table all lit up so I wasn't going to linger. I was ready to go in any case.

Unrelated - At another table there were a few English guys and one of them was wearing a pair of Salomon SX70's. I recognised them because I did once have a pair of those - in the early-mid 80's!

Weekend in Salzburg visiting cousin and family. On Saturday she had a birthday celebration in their shop while still open. Was a bit odd with family, friends and shop customers, though would have been stranger for the customers.

On Sunday had a bit of a wander in town including the Panorama museum and up to the Mönchsberg and rather than just going up the Festung went around the other side to Richtershöhe for a slightly different view.

The centrepiece of the Panorama museum is a 360 view in a painting depicting Salzburg in the years 1819-1829. Very impressive. This snap does it no justice. There are also paintings of other scenes from various parts of the world.

Now in Schladming, a place I am reasonably familiar with having been here several times, the last time 4 years ago. That was 2 years before the World ski championships and quite a bit had been developed in preparation. I can see now that there was a fair bit more done in the following years.

Was a late call to come here. It was a good opportunity to squeeze an extra couple of days skiing as it is on the way from Salzburg to Graz where I am heading.

Also quite different from last time I was here is the weather - last time was in April and it was really spring almost summer weather Right now it is more like winter. A rainy afternoon.

Tue Mar 31 - Schladming - Planai, Hochwurzen

Weather quite variable at the moment. Day started off quite overcast, but no longer raining. The rain over the last couple of days did have a big effect. Some did fall as snow but it was very wet so quite sticky, so made for slow going. Plan was to get higher but then found that several lifts were close apparently due to high wind, although didn't notice this at lower levels.

The other problem was the crowds. This was the first time on the trip that I had encountered any real crowd and lift wait times. Day was not looking very good at that stage. Had figured on crowds over Easter but it looked like many had taken the week before Easter off as well.

Seemed to be plenty of beginners about as well. This resulted in some comedy capers with various snowboarders in the morning. First a bunch of them frantically rearranging their positions in getting ready to load on the chair and barely achieving that. Later another group of 5 tried to load on a quad chair lift - that obviously didn't work out too well. Then they were falling all over the place attepting to ride the platter and T-bars.

Thought of moving over to Hauser Kaibling but that link lift was also closed, so decided to cross over to Hochwurzen instead. This turned out to be a good move. The snow was no better but there were far less people so no queues, so was able to actually get more skiing in even though it was slow going.

In the meantime, the early cloud mostly disappered by 11am and we had sunshine. So did a bit of a gear change in the gondola. While the runs weren't busy the huts were, so only went for a break at 2pm when they had cleared a litle.

By 3pm though it had clouded over again, so took the gondola to the top one last time and started the long descent to Rohrmoos and down to Schladming.

Started raining lightly again in the evening.

Heading back down through Rohrmoos to Schladming. Remember this from 4 years ago - they are able to maintain this one trail through an expanse of green. Since then they have built several new huts.

Interesting how music often seems more enjoyable when sitting outside in the sun at a hut with a beer.
They also played an old favourite. I remember this one being played regularly in the bars in Ischgl in 94 and many times since.

Noticed quite a few people everywhere over the last few weeks skinning up the pistes.Often they do it just to head up to a hut for lunch, then ski down. Saw a couple of guys at lunch today, get up from lunch, remove skins from skis and prepare to ski down.

Josef told me of a story that a hut owner above Maria Alm offered a prize one year to the person who climbed up most times in a season. Apparently some guy did it 115(?) times. He would skin up early morning to the hut, have breakfast, ski down, then go to work.

Lotsa people skinning up in Anzere when we were there in Jan.
We actually wished we had brought over our skins as we had touring binders and going up the hill for a tootle for lunch on bad weather days would have been a nice option.

I noticed the boy in blue with Dynafit Zzero tech boots. Judging by his girth, he's been undoing any climbing by hanging around the huts too long ;)

LOL Yeah, somehow hasn't got the balance quite right. That hut would be over an hour skin from Rohrmoos and probably another hour from Schladming. Maybe loading up too much on Germknodels?

Understand why you were doing it. Plenty though do it to a hut. Not sure though about the ones that go late in the day.

Wed Apr 01 - Schladming - Planai, Hauser Kaibling

Weather is all over the place. Today which this time I am fairly sure was the last ski day of the trip was a real return to winter.

This morning on the mountain it was -7 but with the strong winds felt much colder. Was initially not looking very promising with quite a few lifts on wind hold. Hochwurzen was not an option today as it's two gondola's were also not running. This resulted in a big crowd of people at the gondola top station milling about looking at the lift status board and trying to work out what to do.

I opted to ski down to the Planai 3 chair lift - bad move - uncovered chair into the wind, not pleasant at all. Then went for the 6er chair which was hooded but there was more of a queue. Then saw that the Burgstall chair lift had started up, which would allow me to get across to Hauser Kaibling. Only problem was that one was also uncovered and stopped for a few minutes. Was a very long slow ride and very happy to get off it. Made a mental note to avoid for the rest of the day if possible. Definately was not going to lap it.

Snow though was very good. Gone was the wet, sticky snow from yesterday and we were back to hard & fast with a dusting of new snow down low and with maybe 10cms higher up, so the skiing itself was much better.

Was keen to get over to Hause Kaibling as I recalled the valley runs were generally kept in better shape that those on the Planai which was the case again, so I did a few top to bottom gondola runs. Conditions remained cold & windy so was quite happy with that option. Opted to continue skiing while it was good, also thinking that the huts (inside) would be busy in these conditions. Wind was quite gusty and seemed to be picking up a bit more just after 2pm, so crossed back over to Planai while I could.

Then found the best skiing of the day. Miterhausbahn - the top lift at Planai was running and the snow there was deeper than elsewhere, so on the piste it was very good, covering the hard base and there were still fresh lines just off piste and in the trees, so had a few runs in there before eventually heading down just after 4pm. Cold and a bit hungry but a good days skiing.

So a nice way to finish the skiing component.

A couple of pics from the gondola at Hauser Kaibling (fingers were cold to start with so wasn't keen on taking gloves outside).
