Long flat spot ahead on that piste?

Love pottering around the Austrian mountains, getting into fresh tracks on the various nooks & crannies like those in picture above.

Ok with a good run up. Just a tiny bit of skating required around the resort but not enough to annoy the boarders. And yes lots of interesting features around.

Got me interested in going back to that area....

Was in Mayrhofen a few years back, didn't even look on the east side of the tal. Heaps of Russians about the area, most treating their wives / girlfriends badly, like it was their fundamental right. Put me off a bit.

Do recall the general topography being a little less threatening than the steep glacial valleys further west, but lots of fun.

Would be well worth a visit. Some good challenging blacks on the Zell side. The Gerlosplatte/ Plattenkogerl area has the roomiest wide cruisers i have ever seen in Europe ( more so than Val Gardena/ Alta badia/ Colfosco/ Arraba/ Marmolada area orFiss/ Serfaus - Lech). Perfect for kids and beginners to intermediates. Konigsleiten is also a gem with extensive off piste. Edit.. Hardly any Russians here this week. Loads of Dutch folk who dont go off piste :)

Another great day in paradise. Went up and over to Konigsleiten. A bit of cloud above but got better later on Pistes in fabulous shape. Something for everyone. Some reds with a couple of stiff sections and velocity fueled GS turns on the way back.

    Finale at Gerlos

This place is massive. The trail map simply does not give it justice on how big it is. I may have been on longer chair runs, eg the Peak to Peak at Whistler, but overall this place would average the longest chairs.

Here's a picture of the 'home run'. Our destination is 2/3 up the center valley.

Here's where we hung out today. Groomer central, but the pistes held up really well up high.

Time to take @Kletterer out for a decent feed tonight. He really challenged my skiing ability this trip and I've had numerous stacks each powder day. Luckily with the snow so deep and so soft it was like falling into, well, soft powder snow.

Fabulous dining- thanks bro. Its been a great 3 weeks with some awesome skiing. Been a pleasure taking you into the deep and witnessing your stoke on many occassions. So many places i did not get to show you in Saalbach ( incuding the hidden sidecountry trails through forests) etc. One thing i must concur on is how big the Zillertal Arena is. The trail map is compressed considerably and 1 week just isnt long enough. Off to Munich tomorow. Appologies for all the resulting SDS back home. Hope you get some fresh in Gasteinertal mate.

Bus to Zell and on to Munchen shortly. Hopefully DSNS is navigating his way to Gastein ok. Sunny day. A shame to leave.

    Here's a dilemma...

My last scheduled ski day was originally going to be Friday. I was going to check out Saturday and head into Munich for the weekend. My plane flies out very late Sunday night.

    And then there is this...

At the moment, the only things I have put down money on is accommodation until Sat morning and the flight out Sunday night. Decisions, decisions...

not really a dilemma, as long as you make the crucial connections on Sunday
otherwise you’d have to stay longer LOL
still, it’s a pity to miss Munich - a lovely town

Extend! See if you can change your departure dates (sometimes possible without penalty) and just add a the extra days. You know you deserve it! Besides, we would all appreciate more posts.

In Hong Kong atm. Was very easy and quick getting a train from Zillertal/ Jenbach to Munich. Not many stops. Just need to get off at Munchen Ost and take the S8 ( usually platform 5) line to Airport. Go get some of that Gasteinertal goodness DSNS. Good cruisers on the Schlossalm. Bistro at the bottom was crap 2 years back though.

I went for my first ski in the Gastein Schlossalm.

It was quite an experience catching the cable car up. When it passes over a tower the whole thing starts swinging.

The playing pitch was quite nice, but one quickly gets used to fresh snow.

I banged away until I got the 10k vms

Tomorrow I might jump on the ski bus and try somewhere different. It got quite busy around lunchtime and I had to endure the longest queues so far of the trip.

Are the frequent "bottom outs" on your altitude profile how many times you stopped during the day for apfel strudel?

OK, plans for the weekend have firmed up. I need to check out of my Bad Hofgastein hotel by 11am on Saturday. I'm booked into a Munich hotel near the train station Saturday night. I'm going to pay my bill Friday night, get a sneaky ski in Saturday morning then catch the train into Munich.

Fun in the sun at Dorfgastein

Today I caught the ski bus out to Dorfgastein. What a fun hill, probably the best groomers I've skied so far on the trip.

Here's some of the pictures I took.

At the top of the gondola ride up.

As with every Austrian ski resort, quite a bit of good looking off-piste

And how good are those groomers !

Yet another Austrian ski hut with a view

And @Kletterer or @Heinz could comment on what this tasty dish was, served fresh out of the pan :)

This guy was having fun too

Some stats / maps for the day, the buses ran every hour so you had to pick your time wisely.

Tomorrow I might scope out Sportgastein, but first, time for a dip in the outdoor thermal pool :)

Looks like some local variation of Spätzle.

Did you notice how Dorfgastein has signs indicating location and status of the mountain restaurants? Very civilised.

Note that Sportgastein is entirely above tree level, so better to do it on a fine day so you have a better idea of where you are going.

    How good is Sportgastein ???

First up, it's slightly higher than the surrounding resorts.

It started off foggy up the top, but once that burnt off it was another glorious bluebird day in the Austrian Alps

Lots of off-piste skiing potential here, but I think it needs to be after fresh snow with good vis.

    Lunch was pretty good :)

Some stats / maps for the day

I must confess I really enjoyed today. The snow on the groomers held up great and there was hardly anyone on the hill. I took the opportunity to practice my pole plants, getting that outside ski working more and facing down the hill rather than watching out for Crazy Ivan.
