Autosocks are traction aids for cars which don't have clearance to fit chains. They'll get you out of trouble if, like my old car, you don't have guard or suspension clearance to fit chains.

Check out their website here .

These are brand new autosocks, unopened in the original bag. Size 645 to fit the following tyre sizes :

    215/60 R15
    215/55 R16
    225/50 R16
    205/70 R17
    225/45 R17
    235/45 R17
    225/40 R18
    235/40 R18

    Price new : $200
    My price : $100

Except they aren't authorised as a chains substitute?

Can be used in NSW, just not on 2WD. Can be used in Vic when chains are not mandatory - ie: on roads not controlled by resorts. Would be very useful on 2WD in summer snow in NSW and Vic when chain use isn't enforced.

This is correct.......Textile, composite or fabric snow socks, like Autosock are not approved for use as a “snow chain†in Victoria for 2WD, 4WD or AWD vehicles or in NSW for 2WD vehicles.
In NSW a textile, composite or fabric snow sock can be used on any vehicle other than a 2wd because, at this time, there is no requirement to use any snow chain or “traction device†at all on these types of vehicles.

Snow socks are a “traction device†NOT a snow chain, never have been, never will be.

But a snow chain is a traction device, no?

All semantics. The fact that it's not a 'chain' is no doubt what ST told VicRoads. The purpose of the device is irrelevant as far as ST is concerned.

    No schematics and factually correct

If you live in NSW and drive an AWD or a 4WD to the NSW ski fields then snow socks are an alternative traction control device for those rare times you may be requested to fit "chains" or when you may decide you need extra traction.
