I scored Bells about the same size back 98.
Not much happening up here on the north coast, we have swell size but no banks working with the south swell, 2 wave sets that are a long way apart.

Pumping here on syd's nthn beaches on the weekend PM.....
Clear sunny skies, about 3 to 4 feet of lovely Sth groundswell and we have some banks carved out from the recent bigger S swells! Got waves Saturday, Sunday & even this morning there were a few small ones left over.....June has been unbelievably consistent and has killed the poor may we all had!

Nar, i haven't talked, pic's were just on the facebook news feed. Winki such a better wave than Bells. When i surfed Bells around that size there were only 14 out and some down at winki, its a crazy paddle straight out at rincon when its that big. 98 there weren't to many getting around with jetskis(and non out at bells), i'd say there were a few around over the weekend.

I can't believe how clean the faces are.

Waits was smokin' yesterday with a sick left hand bank and 4-5' of swell on the cards. Was a perfect day after the cloud receeded in the morning and the wind backed off a little in the arvo.

Bastard [IMG] My first surf Saturday morning was one of the coldest I've had in a few years. Came out with numb feet, hands, nose and could hardly turn the key to open my car [IMG]

But when the sun came out mid morning it was alright [IMG]

Surfed the pass the last couple of days, was cranking yesterday. Put the steamer on for the first time in over 12months(still waiting for my new springa) and could hardly paddle, so back out there today in the boardies, bit chilly with the wind and rain but really not that bad, waters still a great temp.

Great shots Phall and Freddy, There's been some nice waves over here as well lately. No lack in swell, it's just getting in when the winds are good.

Went for a bit of a 'search' yesterday and came across this..

Monday and Tuesday were crankin at pass 600-700m rides. A fair few crew in the water were back in boardies, i have to get a bit more use outta my new spring suit before i go back [IMG] . I hadn't surfed in a couple of weeks and first ride back was a good 600m ride, almost fell off on the first turn but all good after that. No photos but the bank is pretty sweet and i'll try get a couple shots on the next swell.

Does anyone know a good spot to get surfing lessons for an absolute beginner? I am in the S-E suburbs of Melbourne so Phillip Island/Rosebud area would be ideal.

I worked at a surf school on Phillip Island a few years back, there's a couple of surf schools down there. I would wait until the water is warmer to learn to surf, or even have a holiday up north.

Micheal Novy about to get smashed....funny place for a roll. He looked like he was going to do a reverse, then it pitched way earlier.
I'd love to surf Knights. Love a good left wedge.

    Cheers guys

Hmmm not much anymore. Used to a bit when I lived in Victor but in Adelaide now and prefer to drive to the shack to waterski. I'm semi surprised you know about Knights considering you're from NSW. I guess I keep forgetting how good Knights can be. Unfortunately everytime I have gone home lately it has been rubbish and haven't even bothered with pics. When I am not there my folks keep telling me how good it has been. 'Bout time it was decent for me and luckily enough it was when a pro comp was on.

I was taking photos with a mate with the initials SC but have no idea whether he is on weatherzone. Wouldn't have thought so but definitely could be wrong. Okey dokey, just had a look on weatherzone and yep, that is him. Good pick up.

Reading your last post on there, I took that shot when he wasn't with me. I was bumming around with the wide angle lens when I couldn't find him. At other times I was walking around with a decent size white lens on my 40D.

Make that your second to last post. I'll have a look at a couple of other pics that I took from there to see. I think I remember a few people next to me.

Thanks for the reply parkmonkey. Do snowboard skills transfer over to surfing at all? Is it hard to pick up on your own or with some friends that surf?

On a wave or mountain face near you.
Once you run through the basics the surf school is really only good for safety, equipment and transport if you don't have it. Until you are ready to catch the unbroken wave (then i'm not sure how easy it is to get coaching at this level)

If you can get yourself a nice big board, you understand swimming in the ocean (and are a confident swimmer) a lot of it is about you getting out there and doing it.(In a safe place)
Standing up is the easy part of surfing, it everything else that takes time, knowledge and skill, snowboarding will only help in the sense that you have already stood sideways on a board before and maybe a bit of a feel your pressuring the rail(but thats later).
If you really want to learn to surf it takes a lot of commitment, hours a week in the water, if you show that kind of commitment i'm sure you will find someone that will take you under there wing.

I met a couple of snowboard chicks from Mt Hood who spent last summer here in Byron, one was super committed to surfing the other not so much. The one who was committed i took surfing everyday the conditions allowed, after about 4months she was paddling into unbroken waves and trimming on the open face.

Thanks a lot for the advice parkmonkey [IMG]

When you say big board im unsure exactly how big is big. Im 6", 85kgs. I've been looking at a 7 ' 6 Mini mal (in particular this one mini mal) Is this the right size?

When you say 'safe place' do you have any areas you could recommend? I was thinking of heading down around Phillip Island, probably Smiths Beach area.
