Leaning on those regular NZ travelers for a bit of advice.

In the early stages of planning an Aug 19’ trip to QT to do the Remarks, TC etc
Anyone able to give me a rough breakdown of costs from the east coast? (I’m from Melbourne)

I know this is depends greatly on flights/accomp etc.

A rough guide for general trips for those that have done it quite a bit?

I will be going with my wife and 2 x other adults, we will all be taking our own gear.

If you want to ski TC get a Jucy rental and you get half price tickets (2for1) deal. Only affordable way to tackle that hill. AirBnB to find affordable accommodation.

If you wanna ski TC. Stay in Wanaka.

Personally, Wanaka is a nicer spot.
However some like the hustle and limited parking space of QT.

If you go down the self catered option. Shop at pak n save near QT airport after you arrive.

Agree with airbnb being the best.

I did NZ South Island this year for 2 weeks and pretty much booked accommodation day by day depending on where we wanted to ride. Never paid more than $150 a night for 2 adults, that was for hotel rooms, 2 bedroom townhouses, self contianed etc. We mainly used hotels.com, holidayhouses.co.nz and bookabach, plenty of last minute discounts get emailed to you once you start enquiring on these sites. AirBnB was always the dearest for up to 3/4 nights, due to cleaning fees, was ok for 7 days and more.

Budgeting $300 a day should do it - $100 or so lift ticket, $100 accommodation, $100 food, drink, travel. Could be a lot more or a little less depending on getting some good deals.

    Excellent info, thanks guys.

What price range do most people look at for flights from Melbourne/Sydney? Which month is usually best to book them?

I go out of Melbourne each year, 7 days late August / early September.
You can save a lot of money searching around for flights or a Jetstar sale. We usually get away with 3 to 400 return, cheaper if you get lucky.
Otherwise I budget around 2.5k all up, but like to buy lunch and go out for dinner which adds up. If you were conservative you could yet away with 2k imo.

But that won't be to ZQN (Queenstown), will it?

Ok if you wanna ski Shutt/Porters but if one factors in getting from CHC to Wanaka/QT and it's likely false economy...

That's usually zqn. We get jetstar on sale, its usually around 250 ish one way and 80 back. However I think their policy on ski baggage has become more expensive since I last went which could be a factor.
Otherwise CHC is the other option, I've got flights with jetstar for 200 return before (in February granted)

    Flying in feb not ideal

I think $700 is a reasonable expectation of a decent price direct queenstown flight in season

From Queensland , Sydney or Melbourne?
    It varies.
I've seen $350 fares ex Sydney
But. Nowadays your ski bag attracts a surcharge

    That’s Brisbane

I’ve seen specials for less but by the time you pay for bag and seat etc it’s around 700 return for me

Still pay that every time rather than go through chch
