The Inaugural Back Country Festival that will be held at Falls Creek has evolved from an event to recognise World Telemark Day into a program packed with opportunities to embrace the snow-covered terrain beyond Victoria's largest alpine resort.

Coordinated by a very resourceful Cam Walker who is very grateful for the support of the Falls Creek Cross Country Centre (who will host numerous free sessions such as an Intro Telemark Clinic) and Falls Creek Resort Management Board, it promises to be a not-to-be-missed Saturday and Sunday, September 1+2.

The crux of this event is the people Cam Walker has persuaded to be involved. Katya Crema and Tamara Hutchins, two very well respected women who have achieved significant outcomes in their respective pursuits, will engage with the participants as they provide an insight into how they both appreciate our expansive back country.

Katya Crema, an Olympic ski cross racer represented Australia at the Vancouver and Sochi Winter Olympics, in the highly competitive ski cross discipline. Whilst her backcountry skiing ability is well known maybe some of her other achievements less so. Crema co-founded the Women of Architecture, Building & Planning, a women’s networking group through the University of Melbourne.

Tamara Hutchins is the Co- Founder of Melbourne Girls Outside a group designed to empower women women in the outdoors, will speak about breaking down barriers to adventure and how women can be comfortable in the backcountry.

Some of the event’s Free sessions offered by Falls Creek Cross Country Centre include an Intro Telemark Clinic, intro Backcountry Snow shoe tour and Snow Camping (Join Pete and/or Geza for snow camping tips, how to pitch a tent or build a small shelter, learn the tricks to cooking in the snow, creating snow tables and chairs and keeping dry),

There is also a Navigation Clinic, Beacon search basics session that provides a good introduction to the use of a safety beacon and the basics of companion rescue, Touring skills session around the Nordic trails (on and off groomed areas) suitable for intermediate level or above skiers/split boarders who have their own gear, a Tour to Mt Nelse leaving Windy Corner at 9am back around 3pm (suitable for intermediate tele skiers, splitboarders and people with alpine touring bindings), all day Tour to Spion Kopje or Mt McKay for intermediate to advanced skiers and riders. The aim is to ski out to either of these mountains to do runs on the steeper slopes.

On day two, Sunday September 2, World telemark Day will be acknowledged with two options

Join other skiers and riders to have a fun day in the resort (you’ll need a lift ticket) or join a tour that will be determined by the group and the snow conditions but be prepared for four to five hours in the backcountry. Meet at the Windy Corner Cafe at 9am for a start by 9.30.

Just to be clear, the resort tele session is about a social ski (blowing the yo-yos out of the water with our style), exploring the resort piste and off-piste and then later exploring a bit of side-country terrain. The side country will be short and cruisy, not big line stuff. You'll need skins or pattern base, or to walk.
That's the thinking anyway. If the weather is crap we'll make it up as we go.

And if you're coming up for the fest, it might be worth keeping an eye on the facebook event page for any relevant updates.

Gully is the riskiest lift to try to get a pack up. The lifties will be on the lookout for people doing it when it is not permitteed. At halleys they won't be expecting it as much, people often ski their shopping home that way and you are more likely to get away with it.

Bouquet to the lifty at the top of Scotty’s the other weekend who slowed down the lift for me so I could offload with a largish 18kg backpack without having to worry about stacking - coming back out of BC from over the Knolls...

I've ridden Gully a number of times over the years with a 40l pack. Last time was early last month. Whether the rules have been changed I don't know.

You can always yell for a slowdown. Not at Gully though, that would put it in reverse.
    Summit takes timing.

hi @Cam Walker i was looking at camping at ropers lookout (probably get there friday), i presume a crew will still be there regardless of the weather....or are you looking at more salubrious options?

Pretty valley would be more protected but its further to go after beer and donuts.

Pity I don't drink beer, I don't suppose there will be any cider floating about???. I might have to buy a beer for someone else or just make a donation as DWA is a great cause to support.

Buy me a beer! (im more a vodka-whisky man tho)

    'Home again swiftly I glide,
    Back to my beautiful bride.
    She'll not feel so rotten
    As soon as she's gotten
    Some cider inside her inside.'

edit: that was not intended to sound pickuppy, but looking back at it it could be misconstrued...apologies if so)

    hi MR
to be honest I'm now a bit undecided about what I'm doing. Got struck down by the flu on monday. Am now (mostly) upright and will be at falls tomorrow arvo, but still feeling pretty shit, so will just make a call then based on how I feel. If i'm not well enough to ski in I will prob car camp at Mountain Creek. I'm aware of 4 other people who are planning to be out towards Roper Lookout for the weekend. The plan is to look for the nearest sheltered site on the dam side of Ropers so its not too far to go after the beer and donuts, I'll check back in tomorrow after I get to Falls.

Maybe I will just chuck a six pack or so of cider in the car, for 'emergencies'

All good, im still fluffing around with my plans too and sometimes i like to just make things up and not get too committed. Im sure ill see you friday or sat at some point somewhere.

It was a pleasure to show people around and do a bit of sidecountry though the vis was so-so and the snow like clag.
Sorry I missed the Tele day - I'm having to ration my knees. They've been hammered in these fantastic conditions.

Had a good time guiding a group through to Nelse and back - some sweet runs off Nelse for those who stuck it out all the way there, and an enjoyable time for all - mixed snow conditions and viz.but always good to get out there.

Second the thanks to @Cam Walker! Thanks for organising such an awesome event. It was a pleasure to help out with the navigation clinic, and I really enjoyed meeting other people on the weekend, and discover some interesting touring close to Falls Creek that I'd never thought to explore.
