Well we arrived in Osaka last Sunday for 5 days of sightseeing before the skiing, but it's been so busy I haven't had a chance to start a trip report, so I'll catch up now. Currently flying at 37000 feet using the free JAL wifi on our way to Sapporo.

Looking forward to your report. Yours is probably the best report for affordable family friendly holiday ideas.

Flew over with China Airlines (the Taiwanese airline) to Osaka via Taipei. Nice flight over, everything was on time, and with cheap premium economy seating ($1100 return) I lashed out and gave the wife and kids an extra treat.

Arrived at Kansai Airport, got some cash from the ATM and then sent our ski bags onto Hokkaido so we didn't have to lug them around. Jumped on the train for our Kyoto accommodation.

Stayed in a nice little modern apartment in Kyoto($104 a night for the 4 of us), 15 min walk from the Kyoto train station or a 5 min bus ride.

Looks like we're coming in for landing so I'll have to continue this later tonight in Furano. :)

Some sightseeing around Kyoto on Monday.

First we headed up to Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion)

In the afternoon we went down to Nara to see some very friendly wild deer.

Although a word of warning, if you buy the deer crackers to feed them you will most likely be swarmed by deer, some of whom can get a little aggressive. So be careful if you have small children.

    A few more Nara shots.

    Deer feeding frenzy.

Tuesday we jumped on the shink to travel down to Hiroshima for the day.

A city to remind us of the horrific price of war.

Wednesday was the day to visit Himeji Castle. A cold day with even a little light snow while we were at the castle.

Kids had fun climbing the 7 storey main keep.

Oh and for those with young kids looking for some well priced ski gear, try Sports Depot and Sports Alpen. They're a chain store spread all across Japan so whether you're travelling to Sapporo, Tokyo or Osaka you'll find their stores.

    https://www.alpen-group.jp/store/sportsdepo_alpen/ (you'll need Google translate)

Here's some of the ski packages they had in their Shin-Osaka store starting from 13990 yen, which includes skis, bindings and stocks.

Playing catch up, now on Thursday.

Packed up our gear and headed to Osaka Itami airport to catch our JAL flight up to Hokkaido. Used some Qantas FF points for the domestic flights so it only cost around $23 in tax for the four of us.

    Bargain JAL flight

Picked up our one way car rental from the airport so we could drop into Tomamu to get our season passes on the way to Furano.

Quick stop at Tomamu - we"ll be back here next week.

Then onwards to Furano. After checking in to our little cottage we went down to do a spot of grocery shopping.

    Anyone for Octopus ?

Had been snowing all afternoon and into the evening so some of the back roads around our accommodation in Furano were becoming a little challenging, thankfully I went with the 4WD Toyota Fielder.

Snowing hard, and tomorrow (Friday) we start the skiing. :D

Friday - first day skiing in Furano.

A good amount of fresh overnight and a blue sky morning meant I left the wife and kids having a slow breakfast while I got some early runs. You know what they say, "no friends on a powder day" ;)

Popped back in for lunch to return the rental car and pick up the family.

Our 4WD Toyota Fielder had done its job.

Then took the family out for an afternoon ski. Kids 12 and under get a free daily lift ticket and our adult day tickets cost only 3400 yen (with our Tomamu season pass discount) - much better than an Aussie resort.

    Saturday - Japanese long weekend.

I thought this weekend would be busy on the mountian, considering it is a long weekend, but it was surprisingly quiet. Maybe tomorrow will be busy.

Light snow this morning had freshened up the surface.

It was so quiet my boy couldn't find any friends to ski with...

So he decided to have a BIG bowl of ramen noodles....

Before we went back out for a little night skiing.

    Sunday/Monday in Furano.

Two beautiful blue sky days. A little on the cold side(around -10c) but great days to ski and take pics. Sunday was a little busy to start but then the crowds eased up and Monday was easy going all day. Surprising considering it was a Japanese long weekend.

Looking across the valley towards smoking Mt Tokachi.

    Up towards Kitanomine Romamce No.2

    Some out of bounds terrain...

Daughter said it was a little cold...

    Temp gauge agreed...

All was going marvellous until the last run on Monday. And then it happened............

Hope he is ok, my young fella did his arm @11 on his first day riding on one of our ski holidays. This year (now 19) he has broken his other arm just before this years japan trip. It’s devastating when it happens.

Sorry to hear about the leg, that sucks! Poor fella

My rule about such things is that a serious injury whilst on holidays qualifies for a "do-over" so I'm sure he'll have a much better time next year.

Had the day off today sorting out some details relating to our boy's accident yesterday. Weather was windy (no snow) with temps around zero during the day.

For something a little different. If you're ever looking for those strap on spikes for your boots, head into "Homac", they had a good selection. They're a little like a Bunnings cross Big W store.

Currently snowing and blowing here in Furano. Only been going a few hours but about 10cm on the car and a 30cm snowdrift on our stairs out front.

Since crutches aren't that good for walking around in the snow I might have to get the boy one of these to push him round in. ;)

Wednesday. 15cm overnight here in Furano with some blue sky in the morning and further light snow in the afternoon.

With our boy out of action it meant we're back to tag team skiing (I ski morning, wife skis afternoon) just like we did when the kids were babies and toddlers.

Now with these trip reports we all like to show you the great pics and make you envy our holidays, but just to show you it's not all fun and games, here's a pic of what I'm doing right now.......

Washing clothes for a family of four.....

Bet you don't want to be here now...LOL

Except I'm in a lonely laundromat. Unfortunately our accommodation in Furano doesn't have a washing machine. :(

Only thing pre-made was the gyoza, but you still needed to cook them. All the rest was prepared in our little cottage kitchen.

So we left our little red cottage in Furano yesterday for the drive to Tomamu.

And once again I had to clear snow from the car. I'm starting to miss QLD where you just jump in the car and go.

With the boy out of action with his cast and me now having a cold, we spent the day watching the Australian Open tennis and sumo wrestling, while the girls went skiing and have now gone to the wave pool. At least someone is enjoying the place.

Finally got some energy back so headed out yesterday(Sunday) for my first ski of Tomamu this year.

Compared to last year there's a little less snow, with more sasa bamboo showing through and the occassional bare patch down low.

Took this same pic last year but I swear my daughter has had a growth spurt since then.

Today (Monday) it was on. 22cm in 24hrs and has been snowing moderately all day. Checked in at the registeration desk to pick up my "Experts" powder arm band, quick check of my phone by the staff and it was time to hit the tree goodness. :D

With 22cm and building on top of the previous days smaller falls there was some nice knee deep amongst the trees. No face shots yet, but still plenty of fun.

Snowing all day. And once the Club Med groups went in for lunch even the runs were looking empty.

Still nicely snowing at the moment so maybe another repeat tomorrow.

We had one in Nqzawa that was the size of my kid's head! It took all four of use to finish it. 'Twas delicious.

Baring some really obvious exceptions (because the ski-jo is perhaps very small or quite flat) isn't everywhere good on a pow day?
