Ahhhh... my base camp had that in mind, except up in those rocks, Janus, can get a tad breezy... [IMG] back in the trees on the spur up from DHG is better. Others agree. [IMG]

This one might be a goer for me as an introduction to the BC. Possibly might also be able to get the +1 convinced and a mate from his work who is keen to do a BC trip.

Got a million gear questions so will start another thread rather than hijacking this one.

Wow! A bit far out for me to decide, but I'm interested in a BC intro as well.

Will keep a keen eye on this thread...

I reckon newbies to BC could cope.. perhaps the xtreme team could go and tackle the steeps, and gumbies like me could just shuffle aroudn the tops. Little trips out to Townsend and the Abbotts on good days. Plenty of material. [IMG]

cowboy dan it doesn't take very long at all to shuffle to LBC from Karels. Getting back is a trudge however, which can take some hours depending on snow, fitness and weather.

If you go downhill from Leatherbarrel creek you will eventually hit the Alpine way. On the way you will run out of snow and strike very dense vegetation. When you finally get to the road you will then find yourself about 15km+ from Thredbo.

The usual routine is to hike back to the top of the catchment and then down via the thredbo ski runs, or down to dead horse gap.

The trudge Majikthise was referring to was from the bottom of your run back to the top of the rams head range.

Can't compare to Watson's Crag, but the lake Albina Valley is superb. It offers a fantastic variety of terrain. You can't camp in the Albina valley though - set up just below (south) of Meuller's Pass and it's easy day trips to Townsend, Little Austria, and the LNC.

The advantage from under Meuller's Pass is that you can usually get out to Seaman's Hut and to Charlotte's Pass in grotty weather - much harder if you're below Lake Albina somewhere.

What sort of distances and terrain conditions are we talking about for the hike in and out?

My main basis for comparison is walks around the Blue Mountains, eg. out to Mt Solitary. Only done day walks/carrying small day pack before.

Alrighty. obviously there's no hurry but if people on the list, and those who want to be on the list, could pm me or post here with where they are comming from (ie, south-east Vic, vic CBD, Sydney, yadda yadda, etc.) i'll put it up near each person on the list to make transport organisation possible as the date draws closer.

Preference is only to take one day off, was thinking Friday but Monday no drama's either (with reasonable notice).

Will be travelling solo, happy to drive and shout parking and split fuel. (Got NSW trips planned for July and Melb Cup also so buying an annual kozi pass).

Can take 2 extra's comfortably, 3 might be a bit tight - 92 liberty sedan.

I'm up for this as well, was talking last year about the best way to get into the BC circle of life, I guess this is the opening.

Will be heading from West Sydney, out Shrek's way. I wouldnt mind getting a list of things to take (as per cabby's post) as I have seriously no idea. It's tax time coming up so a trip to the shops might be in order [IMG]

Ok question. Sounds like there are quite a lot of people planning to come to this event that have limited experaince in the BC.

I think this is great and would love to see as many people as possible out there. However because this is possiblly a organized event if someone was hurt etc could there in anyway be any issues leaglly for the more experianced people if an inexperianced person decided that they wanted to be a ***** if they were hurt in anyway?

As I said just a question.

i can't see any legal problems really...unless someone was really digging for it and tried to pin it on me.
Onus is on each trip member, if the **** hits the fan you have to be able to support yourself as per every other BC trip. Just because there's going to be a big group doesn't mean you can cut corners.

I'm all for having people with limited BC experience along (hell, up untill last season I had none at all) but they must make sure they know what they are doing and are suitably prepared.

Anywho, I'm with shrek, this is far from organised. All we have is a list of internet names and a probable date/place.

looks like i might be back on track for this

can we have a sticky thread on gear, safety gear, precautions tips and tricks - maybe posted by one member so it aint too confusing for us newbies [IMG]

maybe we can limit liabilty, otherwise..... whats your real name, number and addresses [IMG]

    Gear i have so far

    tent - 4 season
sleeping bag 4 season (-15oC rated)
    thermarest & foam camp roll
    snow shoes
    snowboarding gear (blah blah)
    compass and topo map
    torch

i guess i need the cooking equip, shovel and some other saftey stuff and some extra dry clothing &/or need to team up with someone carring the cooking gear etc

    things i need to know

how much food (i'm assuming pasta meal thingys) and water (i have heard it takes ages to melt snow - unless we are camping near a creek/river) to carry etc

btw have read the other thread on what to take

many thanks to Bogong & Ledgend for some of their posts

Caboose  If you pike from the REAL SIC, you have no right to quote me in relation to the backcountry one! Come on, there is a whole thread devoted to getting you up to Hotham this weekend.

Don't go to your local this weekend, come and drink with a better (?!!) class of people at Hotham.

well we're still a month out, pics coming back from the main range are looking very nice atm.
some boys were playing on the cornice recently. enogh snow? well if we get the chair to the top of thredbo and head west we will be higher than any resort, more chance of snow for us than any resort bound group.

I'm booked in for thredbo the weekend before so I'lll have a good idea then what its going go to be like.
