And yet 4 weeks ago they were all predicting a colder, snowy season

From MeteoStar. I see a normal pattern of fronts, and lots of them, but just not cold enough, to produce significant snow, till late Oct, early Nov. 540 line remains quite North.

Warm seas produce more precipitation. So whilst coastal resorts will get rain. I think Sun Peaks will be warmer, but still fall as snow. Whistler and Vancouver Resorts could suffer. IMO.

But I'm deleting this post tonight. Sun peaks doesn't need anymore Whistler Refugees. LOL

Sorry to take sides but for sheer dramatic effect , I’d take ‘ the blob’ over a ‘ blocking high’ any day.

Mild El Nino season coming. A bit warmer and a bit drier than normal. Snow conditions in the alpine will be fine, lower reaches of resorts with big vert or lower overall elevation will not fare so well. Winners: SP, BW, Apex, WH2O, LL, Sunshine, and (if you stick to the upper lifts) Revy, KH, Pano. Losers: Red, Fernie, SS, Kimberley, Whistler.

That isn't the whole story. Simplifying it like that is easy, but that doesn't tell the story of the -EPO ridge, or any other factors for that matter.

Yes my post was very generalized. As will be assessment of of overall season conditions across the southern half of BC. Tell me in April if I was generally wrong or generally right.

I should add I am really hoping for a mild low snow winter down low. My building crew and my labour costs both took a beating in the unusually cold snowy weather of the last two winters and we do have another winter build coming up. Would be nice to have a repeat of the 2014/15 winter, we poured a big floor slab on the morning of Christmas eve 2014.

Well call me wrong... and somewhat right. Yes it has been warmer than normal. But wetter too. Whistler got 384 cm last month, new record for December snow for them, likewise some record breaking rainfalls for coastal Vancouver Island (Ucluelet on the already wet west coast: 214 mm in a single day!). And oddly the Rockies have been doing very well for snow too. But the southern interior has been dry and warm. Poor Apex is having its worst start to the season in the 30 years I've been there, and Baldy not much better. SP has been doing OK, SS and BW perhaps a bit less snow than normal but not badly so. No idea why Apex is so far behind, we generally get snow from the same broadbased systems that affect the entire southern half of BC. We've had a very mild run down in the valley which is great for building work, but we do want some skiing too. We are used to being spoiled with moderate temps and little snow in the valley but great skiing just 30-40 minutes away at the resorts.

Good to see the US getting some nice falls. California is doing way better than last year too. Uncle Blob probably affects them too?

Jet stream has been on a more southerly track this winter. Mild and dry for southern BC and the PNW, wetter for California. I think that is typical for El Nino but I am not expert.
