So what is the story guys, I saw the footage on TV last night, looked like Creek or Village tows was running, but also looked pretty scratchy, and not pleasant weather. Is there skiable snow out back across, Fannys, Bills, Giblin, let alone Summit, or still too little for this ? Here's hoping that huey can deliver, plus a little more snow making can happen if conditions allow.

    Hi All,

Current plan for operations for the weekend:

Friday: Bass, Village and one lift over the back

Saturday/Sunday: Bass Village, Fannies and Bills (2 Tbars and 2 pomas)possibly more depending on how ice damage repairs go on the weekend.

Weather looks good for the weekend with clear days/nights and frost.

Current Snow Conditions: Ben Lomond Snow Sports Photos

Road Conditions: Icy on the plateau, proceed with caution in a 4WD, 2WD should think about fitting chains if in doubt.

Looks like the Ben snow has survived a busy weekend ok considering the trafic the Back slopes and summit are quite good up high. (even looks like a dusting last night - (man made or natural)with a big frost would have firmed things up....

All fingers and toes crossed and and as long as we sacrifice 10 virgins and 6 goats to the Snow God "Huey" it is looking very good for a nice top up of Snow for the Ben starting from late tuesday into Wednesday (snow above 1000m wed-sat.... We will of course get some pre-frontal snow gobbler on tuesday but its looking cold enough & north westerly/ westerly enough to have the slopes looking good for by friday arvo .. Shh nobody up set huey so he doesnt change his mind ! [IMG]

Still looking ok for a nice top up for the Ben .. maybe a few more snow showers tonight, Then a nice big frost to harden things up.. Should see snow starting on the ben from tomorrow late morning and could continue through friday & into sat morning.. At this stage very hard to tell with these east coast low pressure sytems how much but i think 10cm minimum.. Could be 2cm could be 20cm but it should be cold enough for snow on the Ben above 1200m (carrvilla hut) from now until sat !

I'm with you on this one Iceman! The BOM is onto it Ben Lomond Forecast and the charts aren't looking too shabby either.

Your right though, it could be 2 c could be 20 cm! We just have to wait and see what we wake up to on Saturday Morning... If we are lucky it will still be snowing!

Snow forecast on and off until then. Looks like Sunday will be a nuts day for skiing and Saturday won't be too bad either.

See you all in the hot tub on Saturday Night! Bellendena Bash, $20 per head, dinner from 7:30, live music from Hobart and lots of fun for the kids early!

This weeks weather for the ben will be interesting to watch with fronts crossing over the state every day nearly through until sunday .. Snow fall will be above 1200m until thursday night when it will drop below 1000m ... lots of cold wet north westerly weather late in the week..... Hopefully by the end of the week we should have more snow then we started with though as the temps warm during the day & with the pre frontal weather there will be periods of snow gobbler but hopefully not to much hammering Ra*n !By saturday morning the cover could be the best of the season so far !

    Hi All,
Mild temps (+5) and high humidity o'nite has left soft wet mushy snow with large wet patches.
Regrettably AE have put lifts on hold in an attempt to salvage tow lines for when temps cool and/or more snow falls

    Stay tuned

Pity that the lifts are not open today, quite a few dissappointed school students and punters. We at Ben Lomond Snow Sports are open for business snowboarders and skiers and yep the ever popular toboggans have gone out already ! Hope that it does snow bwfore the weekend. Check out our Facebook page for on the spot updates on conditions, our ski cam still needs Computom's attention which should happen over the weekend. Flea

Re: Benlomond snow & weather 2012

It is a pity nothing is running, I did notice school groups were around yesterday. The cover on big ben, bills and giblin looked like it would survive a warm night OK when I was up there yesterday arvo (while skiing the poor cover on fannies - only back slope tow open), but I haven't been back so maybe it has melted fast.

I was about to head up, the report said tows were running today when i first checked. Lucky i had another look before jumping in the car!! Hope we do get a top up.

Good nw snow falls on thurday night and friday as well as another 3-4cm on saturday night have the slopes looking good .
Maybe a little snow today early but it could be getting a bit too warm. Possibly gobbler during the day today and overnight though it could snow! More moist north westelies on tuesday and wednesday producing snot, gobbler & maybe some snow!. this should turn to proper snow from the n/w on wednesday night and into thursday.. Overall we will lose some snow this week but hopefully a nice top up of fresh snow later on wednesday into thursday

AE have regretably put all lifts on hold today due to mild temps combined with very high humidity making the surface extremely soft. Awaiting colder temps and more snow.

should see some more snow falling today on the Ben.. Maybe another 2-3cm which will make condition ok for the weekend. The weekend weather should be great.. Probably the best weekend we have had this ski season. Sking should be good over the back .

Re: Benlomond snow & weather 2012

I've asked this in previous years and I will ask it again: Why is there no estimation of snow depth for Ben Lomond, just NA? It is not difficult to pick an arbitrary spot (such as other resorts do), stick a metre ruler into the snow until it stops, take a measurement and write it down. Is it due to laziness, lack of care by AE or because it is undesirable to publicly state how little snow is deemed necessary for Ben Lomond to be opened for lifted access? It used to be done some years ago (5+) but hasn't for some time. Average snow depth (or at least a reasonable estimation of) is a pretty useful bit of info to have if you are considering doing the drive to Ben for the day. The crappy web cam photos don't give you a proper idea. If I want to bounce off rocks I'll go to Mt Field for the day. If you are charging money for a lift ticket ($60+? per day) I want to know how much snow is on the ground before I drive up. Any answers from the commercial operators up there? I know you used to be able to tell it was very marginal if tows were running and ski rental had stopped hiring out gear (as it was returned ruined).

I also wonder why Ben Lomond (with Mt Buffalo) are the ONLY sites that do not provide estimated snow depth... surely not too hard

Highly variable across the mtn Don1, because of the uneven terrain, rocks, shrubs, snow drifting etc. I think this has been discussed before and ski.com has agreed not to bother with it. My depth estimate atm would be in the average range from 30 - 60 cm.

Re: Benlomond snow & weather 2012

I agree with you Squidly . Yes you could have an average snow depth indicator but what will it mean.? The varience of snow cover from Giblin slope down to the lift station at Summit tow of the village Poma lift is huge.... There might be 50-60cm+ at giblin lift station at the moment and 10cm - 15cm at summit and village lift station.!

Perhaps an 'exposed rocks per 10 square meters' report would better reflect the Ben cover. Also a snow hardness test on the Vickers scale ranging from 'nice and slushy' to 'harder than granite' might help [IMG]

For example, Saturdays cover was in the single digits (good), with a hardness rating of marshmallow.

sorry tommo79 if you consider the ski cams to be ' Crappy' or marginally better than nothing. If you are prepared to do it yourself feel free, we are only doing it with-in our limited positions on the building, maybe with all the flak we put up with.... next year why bother. Flea

I think now that the stakeholders are taking regular photos and putting them on Facebook along with updates about the conditions etc surely the cams in their current form are enough for people? The Ben Lomond Terrain Park guys have been slamming the internet with photos showing the conditions and updating those who do not look on these forums so whats the issue?

It wouldn,t matter if you had free lift tickets , free beer and free ski hire some people would always find something to be unhappy about. I think with the cams and the facebook pages info about the current snow conditions has been reasonsbly good

Its going to be warm today with this weather and some pre-frontal Ra*n doing later today some damage to the cover. There is a chance of Snow up high later this evening with thunderstorms.. It will be cooler tomorrow with a better chance of snow.. Freeze level is marginal (Snow above 1400m ) so its a bob each way ! Lets hope we get enough snow top up after the pre frontal weather to operate later in the week and or on the weekend!

Re: Benlomond snow & weather 2012

Looks like a net gain for the Ben last night with temps hovering around 1 degree

Quite a bit of snowmelt Tuesday and Wednesday and turned to snow last night about 5pm. if you compare the cover betweek yesterday afternoon's cam shots and this morning there is a significant difference, not sure how much... maybe 5cm (50mm)

Eryl has suggested that the back slopes have held up a lot better than the front and is highly hopeful of spinning some lifts this weekend.

More snow is forecast on and off today with snow falls lowering to 700m in the North East tomorrow with snow showers increasing. At this stage the winds won't abate until Monday but that could change.

Anyone else got any weather pearls of wisdom [IMG]

Re: Benlomond snow & weather 2012

    Hi All,

Looks like that's all she wrote folks. Thank to everyone that helped out this year! Its been another to remember. There is still plenty of snow for the folks who are keen to walk or get on their cross country skis and some great drifts around for tobogganing!

Snow also forecast on Thursday and Friday next week. [IMG]

Looking to next season there will be a call out in the coming weeks for those who might be available to help with the summer grooming program. Many hands make light work! With the great ability to improve the slopes because of the Ski Slope Plan its given us a new ability to make a difference to the slopes!

Thanks to everyone who has got up to the mountain and supported the businesses this year! Hopefully a bit more fun next year.

If anyone has any feedback or would like to be involved in working with the Ben Lomond Committee on any projects it is looking to undertake please contact us on the email below.

What a bunch of cry babies you guys are. It is a simple question and I know the snow depth varies accross the range, hence the use of an 'arbitrary' place to measure snow depth from. Some of you guys make something really really easy sound very difficult. It is not. I'm not really interested in what 'you think' of mobile phone pictures detailing ski conditions Iceman, and Fleafoot - you're not up at snowsports working for nothing are you? You spruik your employer 'we're open for business etc......disappointing no tows were running.....disappointed school groups...etc' and indicate displeasure with AE and also that a couple of school groups would be enough to slog out the cover for the weekend. Not a great deal of cover around then. And yes, people will complain about things when they are done in a slipshod, half-assed mannner.

    Hi Thommo
The Ski.com snow report is done voluntarilly by a seasoned mountain worker in his own time. Feel free to take over the role and supply the multitudes with the plethoria of info that the minority wants I am sure the current volunteer would appreciate some sleep ins .

    HI,
Agree with you BD, we obviously have the first volunteer in Thommo for the work bees that were so well attended by the usual few. He can drive up from Hobart and put his expertise into practice and put his snow stick wherever he desires. JUst for the record the pay at BLSS is not fantastic, and what we are trying to say is that we are the HIRE business only, and have no control over the tows, as they have no control over what we do on the hire side. We can not answer any questions regarding lifts and they can not answer questions regarding hire and ski school etc. Stop criticing and be pro-active Thommo.

That's it that's all - at least for this year!

The crew at the BLTP would just like to say a quick but heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed in any way, small or large, to the successful trial of a terrain park on Ben Lomond this year.
To the local shredders and volunteers who gave up their time and sweat to help move gear, organise fencing or shovel snow around and groom features – thank you! Your dedication and effort were appreciated – it was amazing to see so many people turn out on so many different days and lend a hand.

To the local businesses and mountain stakeholders, thank you! Our sponsor list is long and varied, but we really need to thank Trenching Systems Australia, Status Awareness Technologies, Catalyst Snowboards, Burton Snowboards, Robbies Confectionery, Verdant Tasmania, S. Architecture, CBM Sustainable Design, Energy Bank, BP, Maintenance Welding and Launceston Sport n Surf. Without your contributions and belief in our vision, the park never would have become reality.

To the mountain stakeholders who gave us so much time and support – Geoff & Flea Foot @ Ben Lomond Snow Sports, Chris Colley, Donna Stanley & Adam the Ranger @ PWS and Eryl & Barry @ Alpine Enterprises; again thank you so much for your belief in what we are doing – especially to Eryl for providing the much needed public liability insurance! Without this the park never would have gone ahead.

To anyone who came up and enjoyed the park, who watched people throwing down some tricks, got involved trying out the features or just had a good time in and around the park; cheers for coming up and getting involved! We look forward to seeing all of you at the top of the park strapping in next year!

It was rad to see so many people up there this year; hopefully next year it’s even bigger and better. We have plenty of ideas, and are working with all the involved parties to make sure this just keeps getting more ridonkulus! See everyone next year!

    Sincerely,
    The BLTP Crew.
