Have to agree with that, as quoted in an old ski movie I have, :there are two times in life, "normal time and snow time" It is definitely the latter [IMG] !!!!

What's the news on the road guys? Where and when do we find out if it's only chains on 4x4 or 2wd? Can't wait to get up there tomorrow!!

Ron, all vehicles need to carry chains regardless and it may change through the day depending on how clear the road has been made.

The latest report that I have from those working on the mountain today, at 7pm, is that the ladder will remain closed tomorrow (Friday) with the plan to hopefully open for Saturday. A final decision about this will be made late tomorrow afternoon.

The boom gate at the bottom will remain shut until there is a sufficient track and parking cleared on top of the plateau. Currently the road to the ladder is cleared of snow, however little parking is available.

The track from the bottom of the ladder to the top is a bulldozer blade width wide and has been pushed through with great difficulty today. Reports suggested that on the last rungs of the ladder, the snow was above vehicle roof height.

The ladder and plateau road is very treacherous still and there is no way of two vehicles passing and certainly no parking available at the top.

Sorry to be bearer of bad news!!!!!!, but bloody hell there must be some snow up there!!! [IMG]

My suggestion is to give it another day or so before trying to get up there, as you won't be allowed up the ladder anyway, and PWS will have enough work on their hands trying to get it all clear, without needing to spend time sorting out us mad keen snowbies!!!

Ranger's hut yes, as the road to there is clear, however Carr Villa is still under snow and he road hasn't been cleared, and isn't probably likely to get done at this stage. Access to the village is the first priority

I have just been contact by PWS to advise that overnight, after 6pm, somone or someones have broken into one of the bulldozers working to clear the road, and smashed all the windows and removed the dashboard from it.

This has left it completely inopperable.

It has put the road clearing miles behind as they now have had to deal with this situation and the police.

The second dozer was intended to drag the grader to the top of the mountain so that it could begin clearing the carpark. This is now not likely to happen until later today, if not early tomorrow.

If ANYONE has any information, or saw any vehilces on the mountain road last night, please contact PWS immediately

Further updates will be made later in the day.

Bastards !!!! God that is so disapointing, what sort of scum would do that. You really have to wonder about such idiots and what makes them tick. Bugger, that puts a dampener on things.

I just phoned McDermotts to find out about shuttle buses up the mountain, in case anyone was interested to know. The advice I got, was that they were not going to be operating this weekend nor likely next week. The earliest they would be operating was next weekend, with the decision to be made next Friday, depending on whether or not Ben still has snow to make it worth while them operating.

So anyone intending on heading up, and dependant on when the road and car park can be cleared will need to either have 4x4 or at the very least chains. That is my take on things.

I think the 2wd will be impossible.

    Even with chains!!

Sounds like there is pretty much an ice sheet up there.

madness. can't believe anyone who cares enough to drive up to the ben would then do something like that. probably the same bunch of pricks who cut the head off simpson in scottsdale.

well, i'm mad keen to head up tuesday, but don't have a ride at this point in time.. anyone heading up that wouldn't mind giving me a lift?

daveski4ever, ANYONE heading up must carry chains regardless. I am almost certain PWS will be asking to see them, even if you are not asked to fit them.

PWS are having trouble today in a Landcruiser with 4 chains fitted, so to attepmt in anything less is just stupidity and putting lives in danger.

Brad I think you mis-understood what I was trying to say, or alternatively I didn't state it clearly. Of course all 2WD would have to have chains fitted, and not just carried in the car. I know the rules :). No chains no going up.

In the current conditions and with ice on the road, I would have to agree, without a 4WD (and probably fitted with chains). it would be stupid and dangerous to try to head up.

That limits me, as I don't have either, currently.

The foothills of Benlomond is hillbilly country with a smattering of crims and career unemployable losers unfortunatley living among the mostly law abiiding good folk of Blessington and Upper Blessington

@The boy from Tas: Nope, I wasn't. I took another comment as a generalised attack on Tasmanians, and responded to that in kind... Besides, seeing as you're the boy from tas, calling you a mainlander would have been pretty stupid [IMG]

Does anyone know if the road has been properly cleared yet? And if it was when?

Need to make the decision about driving up from Hobart tomorrow morning and if the road was cleared late today or not at all, then frost forming tonight is going to put the kibosh on that.

    Ben must be covered,
I went to Barrow yesterday (Thursday) the road was clear to the BBQ area with people actively clearing the road, But the 4WD track after the BBQ would have probably been to much for my car so we walked up, the Southern cross team were coming back down from the 4WD track and we had a chat to them, they couldn't make the top with 4 chains on (probably also do to with their 4WD system)
We walked up the road for 10-15 miniutes to a area where people had stopped and their kids were playing on the hill, It must have been to hard to get through much past there.
On the way back we removed alot of branches from the road to make it easier to go up for others.
The crew clearing the road of snow and things properly were working very hard and were almost at the BBQ area so I would guess they have started work on the track up the mountain as well by now.

Gee I dont understand why people would want to mess with the bulldozer to clear the mountain. I hope it does not cost to much to repair and the people are found.

Conditions certanly look the best for years.Could be a mission getting through the pub door for a beer! Eryl recons the best since 1968.Its hard enough to clear the road without bogans damaging the dozer!

Anyone keen to go up on Sunday and jump on a shovel to help dig the lifts out?

Sounds like some help might be appreciated to get things up and running.

I'm thinking about going up late Saturday or early Sunday morning to help out for at least a full day.

Just so you know apparently the skiable surface was icey as today and extremely hard to board on. Hopefully it slushes up a bit!
