Yes, however the Launceston airport has had 9mm rain since late afternoon. Temp still rising at the airport also +11.4c. Not a good sign for solid state precipitation! Need to be seeing this down to about 10.0c before things start to freeze up on the Ben, assuming there isn't any temperature inversion.
There has been significant r$%n late last night followed by some fresh snowfall early this morning. So the good news is there is white stuff still there - the bad news is that there is a lot of run off happening. Net result - soft and soggy snow. The temperature is falling so hopefully a freeze will happen and minimise the damage. Please try not to go and walk up the slopes today as you will very quickly ruin the snow as you will plug big holes in it due to the current soft state. If we can wait for the freeze it should hopefully be in good condition as there is still a lot of snow out there. Currently a minimum temperature of -8 is the prediction for tonight!
No lifts running today to try and save the snow for when it will actually be fun to ski!
Of course there is still snow around to play in (just please don't wreck the ski slopes for everyone else) and drinks/food etc available at the various businesses.
Thats good news!, looks like it held together with some late snow! should get that freeze we need today & overnight! & maybe a few snow showers today ! like Ben says, guys please stay off the lift lines so they dont get trashed !
Snowing up there at the moment peeps. Just under 3mm at the airport so about 3-5 cm snow! Should snow all day up high (to 1200) and continue on the slopes through all next week. Should be reasonable quantities today and Sunday then again on tuesday-thursday. God only knows how deep it could be after next weekend.
It was good to see the tows going today on a foul day ! snow was not to bad considering it was wet all day ! will need a top up so hopefully the forcast snow arrives later tonight! snow forcast all week! so it could be looking good by friday !
Tows working good luck and if they are working you will be lucky to ride to the top with so much snow they have no excuse but they always have a reason to not to get to the top. Brad will defend them as usual.
Better get up there dave rather then talking about it! . Would be snowing well up there again now! Cover is very good now by Friday morning cover will be the best up there since 2004! . Sat should be a blue bird for you! Though busy!
North Face.....you must have me confused with someone else. I've never defended poor service or lack of running. I have however moderated the way in which complaints are put forward in this public forum.
just spoke to hill good dumping overnight and guess what..... wait for it no tows ive been told. With a forecast of R@#N for weekend i mean wtf is happening. Ive bit my tongue long enough but seriously.......
Is it possible for me to buy a skidoo and tow people over the mountain? least might have some access.
Finally get a chance to go for a slide and......the best cover in years
Ben, I am trying to get there, have been trying to inspire some mates to come with me, but given we have to come from up south, and concerns about tows not working or crap weather, let alone an early start they seem to be reluctant. Friday is not likely for me. So Saturday will have to be the day, as Sunday is out for me. I do hope that Snowsports will run the shuttle bus as I really don't want to take my car up if I don't have to. If it is raining and/or white out conditions at Ben though I might go to Mawson if conditions there are ok instead.
Heading up tomorrow morning for hopefully my first ski for the year. Spoke with both Ben Lomond Snow Sports and also Eryl at Alpine Enterprises this afternoon. Shuttle bus to run all day as needed. 3 lifts (Summit, Village and Fanny's) to be running as of 9. Eryl said that they needed to de-ice Bills and hoped to have this done by lunchtime. Seems a little sad that they don't have this done already and ditto Giblin, but hey any day on the snow has to be a good day.
The one concern though being the wind forecast for tomorrow. Eryl said this could become a problem, as if too strong they will have to close it down. But stuff it, I am willing to take the chance that all will be ok, as I need to ski and the snow cover is the best for more years than I can remember.
Rub it in Bulldozer. Glad you had a great day with no queues. I am jealous after the huge queues on Saturday. I agree with you that they will lose heaps of snow this week when the NE comes through. Need to take it while its there.
The only person with the power to change the lease is the Minister. If you are unsatisfied with the lift operations, email Brian.Wightman@dpac.tas.gov.au defining your reasons. Now is the time to get action before the local state elections. Nothing will happen this year but your influence can change the outcome for 2014.
Thanks Tom, appreciate you posting my photos, it sure was a magic day with magic snow conditions. If only it could last for longer and be like that for a month or more. One day on the snow at Ben, I am not sure really counts as having had a ski season !
Snow melts just as fast on the mainland!,, went from good snow & 16 lifts on monday to burke st & shakey Knees on friday ! at buller ..and 50% discounted tickets because of the poor snow this week!... we still had a great week! ... till next winter!
