Where is the best of the Thredbo apres scene? Best bars? What's open late? Any clubs in Thredbo? Who has the best dancefloor and music? Cheers.
Beer and schnapps at the Black Bear, walk down the hill to the schuss then stumble down stairs to the heller keller (open till late) P.S I have not done this for many years unfortunately
My daughter, now living in Sydney, is talking about going to Thredbo, I may possibly join her if it fits my calendar. I know I would like it, just hasn't arisen
The best apres, depending on when you stop skiing, is in Kareela Hutte. The problem being: it's not really apres and you do still have to make it down in one piece.
The other problem with Kareela is the damage it does to you wallet! My card refuses to go in there. My last shout there was $150 four beers four shots. We sampled a few newbies this week, candlelight has a nice bar and we chilled out to Jock on a few nights, nice by the fire. Denman is good but not my scene, to many people wanting to be seen in Thredbo. I gave Bernti’s another try after slamming it last year and was pleasantly surprised. I hate the bistro and this years visit didn’t change that opinion. First time in years in didn’t go to Ullr, not sure why. I have a mate who has been roped into do cocktails etc at cascades which I reckon would be a laugh as he is one of Canberra’s best barmen.
Kareela was going nuts yesterday, best finish to our ski week ever. We polished off a bottle of wine before we even sat down and turned the waiting area into a dance floor. A day to remember, and we didn't even need to get the snow cat down! Check my insta for video action
They used to when Sonya owned it, I'm guessing the cat is still part of the operation. Have had a few rides down in the cat over the years
Had a cocktail at Cascades on Sat, can confirm it was a goodie! My other votes go to: *Poolside when Mumm or CC are putting a party on *Kareela if you don’t mind your seat being kicked or you head bumped constantly by waitstaff no matter how tightly you pull your chair in *Denman, for an earlier evening cocktail and live music *Keller for late nights and bad dancing *Merritts or Black Sallees for schnappy hour Still to check out: Ullr, BBI, Candlelight
Defs spotted you @sastrugi at Kareela on Saturday, I was there having lunch with Marcelle and a few other friends who'd come down for the weekend. The vibe at Kareela was fantastic, ski shots aplenty! Super busy though with law ski on.
Was super busy indeed! Not the day to hit anyone on the hill - lawyers! Probably the busiest day of the entire season. I think I was easy to spot... made the most of a very fun day after a fab morning ski.
We could have used it Saturday. I thought I was ok until I stood up. One of our friends made it about 10 metres from the balcony before wiping out. She ended up downloading at mid station lol.
I 'ushered' a guy down a couple of years back. Stayed 30 yards behind, expecting to pick up a loose ski (or two) multiple times. He didn't listen to reason and decided the direct route down World Cup was the go. He slid down almost the entirety of World Cup down to Meadows (the steeper bit between the trees above the mid-station) on his back, one ski off / one ski waving up in the air, swearing loudly all the way and throwing away his poles at different intervals. Standing him up and getting him clicked back in was interesting. Then he miraculously made it all the way down in a sort of 'survival power plow'. His friends were reclining in the lounge chairs in front of the cafes at Valley Terminal. They gave him a round of applause amidst much laughter, saying they expected him to arrive backwards in a bucket.
One year after a Kareela closing party I was banned from skiing down, then also banned from chairlift and made to go in cat. As I left the top of the chairlift the last thing I remember seeing is the sibling of one of KT's upper management jumping up and down on the chair, on her FEET, as she headed down Snowgums The worst thing about the Cat is that there is always SOMEBODY who has a spew on the way down, without fail. Then you have to contend with spew rolling around the floor to the bottom Another year after a Kareela closing party I thought it would be good fun to slide down the hill on my backside, following someone else who looked like they were having great fun doing it. What a dumb thing to do in spring slush at the end of the day. Took me about 2 hours to get down, covered in mud. At least I didn't go missing for several hours like the person I was following was Last Sat we only had a couple of bottles of wine and a schnapps. Had a whole lotta fun but managed to ski down safely and make it to the Mumm party at Poolside afterwards. Sometimes I love being grown up
I don’t think I’ve ever had a drunk ski at Thredbo.. that always happens in The Apres Bar after skiing. But there was a slopeside bar in Zermatt that we enjoyed too much and too often that offered endless entertainment from the balcony. Clipping in “I am a ski god” ... first turn “ummmm...maybe not...” Might have to seek out this comedic post Apres Thredbo descent!
If the weather is ok the tables outside Kareela are good for watching the after-long-lunch departures. Just watching people trying to click in can get entertaining. The best approach is to click in on the deck (a nice level surface) then launch. Of course the slope just outside the entrance is often little more than a sheet of ice, which is part of the fun. The guy I ushered down decided to clear some snow off the bottom of his boots and kicked one toe piece completely off his system binding - it went five yards across the deck. He must have lifted up the little adjustment lever when he grabbed his skis. No way he was going to be able to get that back on safely. I remounted the toe piece by reference to the other ski.
After a few drinks in Kareela last year, I turned to a friend and said "lets get the **** out of here before this lot leave" I have seriously no idea how they got down the mountain. Also not sure how Thredbo get away with RSA and allowing people to ski. I know I avoid Karella in the afternoon making sure I don't run into anyone (literally) and I have no doubt that if a pissed idiot skied into someone and seriously hurt them Thredbo would be in for some serious issues.
I’ve never been that pissed that I walked out the door, put my goggles on and didn’t realise I was missing the lense, no! And I heard you didn’t drink on the Austria trip
Yep they have been around for years, most people don’t carry the spare lens on them for obvious reasons.
I'm more exited about the fact that Dei found Aunty Donna in Kareela than the goggle lens. Missed the girls by a week
Only takes one crash. I’d prefer to select the best lense, thankfully the new lenses make this easier. Even in days past changing lenses was a pain in the backside, and easily resulted in small scratches. We ended up buying second hand frames so we didnt have to change the lense.
Interchangeables have improved over time as has all gear. It's no PITA to change them anymore, I usually forget I can even do it. I like having the option to change for low light when travelling to Japan. And I did choose the best lens, have never had goggles so good.
