    Hi everyone,
I am going to practice snowboard carving in Perisher for first time. Can you guys recommend some pistes that are not choppy and less crowded, also not too steep but enough for gaining speed for carving.

    Cheers

Surprisingly, Front Valley when it's quiet is one of the best blue/green runs in Australia. Any week day has periods of the day when you can carve to your heart's delight - on skis or a board. It's not steep but very wide enabling plenty of speed if you want it. Mid season onwards - if there is plenty of snow - upper part of Sun Valley is fun for big wide carves.

So finding anywhere quiet enough in Australia is not that easy, but Front Valley is pretty good real early, the other good run is over at Guthega dunno what its called, but skiers far right off the new freedom chair. Incidentally including me there were 3 hard booters on Front Valley on the weekend, if you ever see me, say hi, I have a red board, custom made by Coiler from Canada (Also have a blue soft boot carver by the same guy)

I think I met you in the t-bar line then! Made me all nostalgic... my first ever hardbooting was done just across from there on Tom Thumb, back in 1992. Would've been 6 or 7 years old.

I think Front Valley is wide but has bad fall line for the run heading direction. It slopes to the right.

This one, though slopes to the left at places, is also wide, longer and much quieter than FV.

Sorry can't find original photo so use my FB profile pic.

Where is this? Smiggins? I agree that wide open groomers are far and few between in Australia. I really miss open uncrowded wide slopes like in Japan here. Its also hard to find areas that haven't been hacked apart by 10am when the snow is good.....

And as usual there are very few tracks to the (skiers) left of the T.... no so wide but often have it to yourself when only one T running. If both are running its a disaster zone and stay away!

That pic was taken at 6.30/7.00 am at a training session for PWSC last year, not really fair to compare the crowd :) It was bitterly cold, all of us parents ended up with hot choc in smigs hotel ... My daughter is somewhere amongst that lift line of instructors.
It was an odd training session, because of the powder that skied short gates on GS skis? They also got made to snowplow out all the burms they created at the end of the session, very tired little bears after that.

No it was first lifts 8.30 maybe a little bit before , as lifties gave in to our frothing.
That's my daughter , her friend and Mum in the foreground.
Friend's Dad (he CAN seriously carve a snowboard see track closest the T ) and his other daughter had first shot.
I'm at the top about to drop into it with my youngest.

Other than a couple of inches of fresh the most easy to find and a personal fav is softened corduroy .Whatever your pitch preference . Green blue doesn't matter.

A year or so ago, on a snowy wind-hold day, had hour after hour of fresh tracks in boot high light pow that filled in between every run. No one else out but us and the liftie. Ahhhhhhhh...... I really need to go skiing.

God looks exactly the same as one Perisher use/used on their website, that was taken on that cold morning last year. But you are right they would never have let a snowboard up there :).
Our kids had it for an hour or so before lifts opened on the day I remember. Lucky ones

I think it was 9am on Sunday 22 July 2012. That was before I knew skiing and snowboarding. I walked up to the top of Mt Piper and Rocky Knob that day.

Is it possible to do those extreme carves in soft boots, or do you need hard boots? It's pretty awesome stuff. I really like watching exceptionally good snowboarders. There aren't enough of them around.

Couldn't agree more Legs . Almost no hardbooters around now. So good to watch one who rips especially from the chair. A lot of the 'spinning dwiddlers ' don't do it for me.
Saw one from a Hotham chair once with his nose on snow and skied down after to see no more than inches between turn edges .Amazing.

Friend tipped me today that Perisher are running it as full page ad in the latest Chill Factor.
Mum ( carves better than most on the snowboard also ) is spewing as they crop her out of it each time.
This year they have cropped the lifts out also.

You get so much speed carving in "firmer" snow that you don't really need anything more than green/blue, seems wussy though.

Had some skier and snowboarder desperate to be in front of us on the first lift last year in thredbo, they pushed in front of my daughter (11yrs) and then started dissing us? We just let it slide, but when we saw the skier (girl) washing the tails of her skis out, and the snowboarder (male soft boots) couldn't carve butter with a hot knife, we just laughed. Some people have no idea of the look or the feel of a proper carve.

Mum & Dad both ski and board but normally they both board.
    And ride very well .
They've actually helped my youngest to switch from ski to board :tany:
At least she knows and has seen for many years what it's really about.
Smiggs was the perfect platform to help get her carving.
Mid-morning and beyond it's often uncrowded on the T's , just depends on school groups tho' they mostly beginners only.

Right you've sold me on it :)

I begrudgingly let my daughter board, but she always goes back to skis, the cool thing about her is that even though she has a choice of TwinTips Snowboard GS and SL, she prefers free skiing on her SL skis. She loves to carve her SLs, I like that she has learnt that feeling so young, to me nothing else really matters when it comes to snowsports.

All 3 of my kids learned to ski first, Dads call.
10 or 12 years on and they all know their way around the mountain , and more important the road rules.
Happy for #3 now 14 to ride a board , skiing first helps her approach to it IMO.
Its all about having fun and getting amongst the freshies no matter which way you get down the hill.

    Back to OP ,
Zalis is pretty good GS type fun when it's empty , fresh and /or not too " firm ".
Not quite where you want to be letting the board / skis get away from you tho if you still working it out.

Its groomed to stick by a winch. Not to ride

You do need to have you act together with the pitch.
Add in the crew and hard pack
