What are some recommendations for a special night out at Falls ?

Should have good food, good atmoshpere, a little bit special

We will be staying at the Halleys Comet end of town, so something special within stumbling distance for the return journey is ideal

It is hard to tell at this time of year because most places will have new staff.

Last year, Feathertop was pretty good and so was Summit Ridge. Heard good things about Astra, but did not eat there. Winterhaven was down, but now might again be good. John Grant is back running it and Fritz is cooking.

Check out the Oshii Go! bar up at Silverski for some japanese. I haven't eaten there yet but all of the food looks and smells great and has reasonable prices attached.

Nice and close to Halley's as well.

That's good to here that Johnny is back at Winterhaven. It has always been my favourite, lovely open fire in the bar. Summit Ridge is usually pretty good. Of cours there is the new restaurant in Quay West, it's Argentinian I think, so you'd have to like beef and lots of it!

Some fairly loose interpretations of the word "restaurant". Big Red's BBQ??? Maggie's Snacks??? Dicky Knee's??? Hmmm... not the first places that spring to mind as being "restaurants".

Astra is consistently pretty good, and a lovely space. Great vodka bar. Probably the best that is still a fairly easy stumble.
Summit Ridge is widely regarded as best food, but a bit further away.
Feathertop and Attunga usually pretty good too. Attunga should be more convenient.
Nelse is not quite in that league, but convenient for you, with reasonanble food and a nice atmosphere too.

In a nutshell: Astra for special but quite close. Nelse for closest and still pretty good

This is a great idea for a thread here.

Last time we were at Falls we kinda guessed blindly as to which restaurants/cafes to check out.

I do recall mixed reactions to our experience at the Cock 'N Bull - at least 1 of our crew felt that some of the food in thier meal was off.

I'll be making a list based on some with good recommendations in this thread and report back on our own experiences during mid August 2009. (Not that we plan to eat out much this trip).

I am guessing from memory that you are staying at the other end of town, but we found Cafe Max's food excellant but a bit pricey(but what isn't at Falls !) and Frying Pan good value(typical pub food), casual enough that kids weren't out of place and they had a really good chick singing a bit of folk rocky stuff !

I like Astra, Milch, Feathertop & Silverski.

Astra is the most special I've been to, but I didn't go to Falls last season nor do I plan to in the future so there may be newcomers or old favourites that are falling away.

Not sure what it is like now that it has changed names to Lees (in Attunga) used to be pretty good. Quiet, refined food, baby grand piano. Food isn't ridiculously priced (about what you'd pay in a decent licensed venue in Syd/Melb). Sample menu is on the attunga website.

Definitely stumbling distance to Halleys/Bullet/whatever it is called this week. Summit ridge is at the other end, likewise Astra/Fruehoff would need oversnow. Cock & Bull is also close by

Astra is not a quick stumble, but it's not that far, only a tad further than The Man.

Summit Ridge is my fav. Got to love a place which serves MIlawa Ice cream...

Falls Creek Hotel food is nice, but I don't think thats open to non-staying guest?

You can book a table at the Falls Creek motel for dinner, particularly outside of August.

ok, just got back from falls and we went out a few times for meals:

oishii at sliverski was a nice japanese meal in a relaxed atmosphere and close to halley
didn't get up to summit ridge as everyone was too tired for the walk up from halleys
attunga had fantastic food and great service

for the slightly lower cost option, the pizzas at the last hoot are really great

A few years ago a big group of us had a good meal (Chinese from memory but we'd been drinking!) at Red Rock / Rim Rock / Something Rock. I do remember dessert was good. Does this place still exist?

We are considerin Oishii Go! @ Silverski during our upcoming trip - we have 3 toddler + 1 baby with our crew.. Any other reviews from there?

We are staying not far from the base of the Cloud 9 / Halley's Comet chairlift.

we enjoyed oishi go meal. It is not "authentic" japanese but it's good tucker at reasonable prices. everyone i know who has eaten there this year has been pleased with it. IIRC they have a kids menu. It's pretty dark and not particularly aimed at kids, but I can't see any reason that it wouldn't be good for kids anyway.

Oishii go isn't as great as everyone is hyping it up to be. IMO if you eat Japanese food regularly you will find this place average. The sushi used smoked sliced salmon.

jumping across from the other thread I posted in, sounds like Oishii Go might be a pretty healthy meal then, even if not fully authentic ?
How long to walk from Woodsmoke apartments? We have a 5 year old with us.

Had dinner at Winterhaven. Food was very nice and the servings the substantial. Prices reasonable.

Had the duck in rice paper as entree, then the pork with the Spätzle. Lovely. Service was cheerful, if not totally professionl, but the former made up for lack of the latter. Would go back again this season.

Walk from Woodsmoke to Oishii Go might be around 10 minutes - depending on the road condition. It is near Julians and the Man.

I'm resurrecting this thread for a 2015 update.

We are staying in Parallel Street for the first time this weekend and plan to eat out Saturday and possibly Sunday night.
Feathertop is across the road and might be beautifully convenient.
Is it too upmarket/expensive for my Uni student budget watching sons and their gfs?

What else is in reasonable walking distance for us?
    Recommendations appreciated.

I haven't been to Feathertop this year but I would not expect it to be cheap.
Milch is also near you. It is very variable - great sometimes, crushingly disappointing at others.

I haven't been to Oishi Go this year, but it might be worth trying, You'll have a short uphill walk afterwards.
Huski does lunches everyday, but I think dinner is be available on weekends. They have some great dishes this year at reasonable prices. I think my fabulous blue cheese polenta was <$20. Same walk as Oishi Go.

Elk do an early dinner special from 5-6:30 - $25 for dish of the day. I think Saturday is pork spare ribs & mash. Same walk as Oishi Go

Feathertop has a nice ambience and pretty good food. I think it was about $40 last year for a main course, IIRC.

We have been doing the rounds as well
Elk was great for dinner, top end prices though
Milch was good for lunch, don't have the flathead though as it smelt quite strong
Oishi Go was great last night, new management this year apparently.
Stingray was good for a light lunch, again pretty expensive for what you got though

Don't go to 1542 (next to FCS at the bowl) IMO, lunch was much disappoint.

Huski ( no longer 3 Blue Ducks) is in new hands. Different but just as good IMHO. I've been for lunch and brunch and very impressed with interesting, generous food. If the lunch menu is available at dinner time, then it should be possible to eat a good meal for <$25. There were some $35ish dishes on the menu that were more than I wanted at lunch time.I'll probably try to eat there for dinner and try them some time.

For that matter, Feathertop sounds good this year, just probably not what tinky was looking for. They've got a "feed me" option that sounds pretty good but I think it's $55 (or maybe $65 ??) per head

we were very disappointed with Astra this year. We wanted something a bit special and got a very crowded, loud bar with kids running around, wooden benches to sit on and a very limited menu - veal steak, chicken, 3 pastas.

We dont usually eat on the mountain @Ben Lomond Brad. Hot chocolate is Gluten Free at the bottom of Towers in Maggiess. Snonuts do Gluten Free crapes near Falls Express. That is about all I know really. Sorry.

Elk has a large selection (most of the menu) of GF....the owner/chef Barry Iddles follows a GF diet himself.
