A discussion in the Buller forum regarding black runs with snowmaking has me wondering what are the best runs in Australia with regular snowmaking coverage? Obviously this is subjective, but I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts on this.

I suspect that they are runs adjoining snowmaking runs that get a enough blown on to them to make a difference. Snowmaking runs will probably be devoid of any interesting lumps and bumps. So even if they are steep, they won't be that great

My personal favourites are the long runs at Thredbo and Blue Cow that have snowmaking. Think Supertrail, World Cup and High Noon at Thredbo, Rollercoaster and Excellerator at Blue Cow.

In saying that, I would presume the objectively best snowmaking run in Australia would be at Hotham? Something in Heavenly Valley with snowmaking coverage, but I haven't been there since I was 10, a whole 8 years ago!

Black snake then snake gully at Hotham has reliable and relatively dry snow but when most other runs are closed it gets very crowded. I have seen it with 2 lanes of scraped off snow with a very icy base with lumpy stuff on either side and in the middle.

sun valley at perisher, gets the prevailing windblown off the snowmaking on towers. awesome terrain, when the skier cross run isnt built... and they seem to love removing another rock or two every year.

So much snow making resource goes into high traffic, traverse, linkage and "must have snow" areas (like FF), that it's a credit to the resorts that they manage to achieve what they do on good runs. There are so many challenges to snow making in Aus, and my experience is only with Thredbo pre automation - but the effort put into High Noon and upper supers and merrits is amazing. These are very low ROI areas for snow making. Merrits plumes often ends up in twin valleys, and supers into no mans land under central spur. Do you know how hard it is to have guns make their payload land on eagle way LOL Those upper exposed areas are nuts.

Upper Imagine is a SM black run at Hotham. It's generally an easy easy black as it is usually groomed.

Well there are true snowmaking runs, and accidental snow making runs.

Often the "accidental" ones are great. Since Perisher put all the guns on the lower pitch of towers, Burnum Burnum has been transformed. Lots of snow making blows in there, and it normally skis really well. Similar with Kamikaze/Chance at Blue cow, which sit in between Zalis and Excelerator, both of which have tons of snow making

The new snowmaking on Dream Run at Thredbo already looks like its been pretty effective given how much earlier that run opened this season and how often its been open so far this year.

An empty High Noon when most other people are up at Merritts or Supertrail is good fun.

World Cup, True Blue at Thredbo. Little Beauty as a consolation but not as much of a priority to KT.

Thredbo - Racecourse at the end of the day, if its still set. ST, HN, I too like WC, tend to do it over ST. Mmmmaamerritts, usually has best quality manmade.

High noon, first thing in the morning with nobody else in sight, on a crisp groom and lightning quick, is incredibly hard to beat as far as snowmaking runs go.

The steep bit is awesome for speed.

Have been told off for cracking a hundred down it.

I would have to rate Dream Run at Thredbo as the best now.

Not that I've skied it this year with the snowmaking but I've had the pleasure many times in the past and have been waiting to hook into it with a reliable covering.
