Hey BW-R, what's the scoop on the new summer operation? Do you think the resort is really serious and willing to take some losses for a few years until they establish themselves? Is this catch up after realising the revenue volumes being generated by Whistler, SP, SS, Pano etc?

I'm TD at a mtn bike DH up there over labour day weekend, looking forward to seeing what they've done. I'll bet it's been 20 years since I was up there during summer.

Hey Sly - I must admit, I rarely venture up to Biggie in the summer. Last time I was there (in August, 15 years ago), it snowed ! That, plus the blackflies and mosquitos kind of turned me off. I'll have to get up there this summer to see if anything has changed in the past 15 years.

It was a good weekend at Big White. Temps 26-28 C, breezy and no bugs. Smoke from the fires of course, but better than down in the valley. The bike park only opened August 1st because of the enormous late spring snowfalls. Nonetheless it's easy to see the resort is serious about summer operations. They've plateaued at 600,000 visits annually and the only way to grow the business and increase property values is to open in summer. The bike park crew is a mix of ski patrollers who also like to ride bikes, and younger trail building specialists. Just half a dozen runs this season but they have a funding commitment from management for ten years of trail building. For now, everything is running off the Bullet chair, but that could change as they grow. The resort doesn't have the manicured look of a long time summer operation like SS or SP, but that's understandable. The park has had good attendance in its one month of ops, especially considering hwy 33 was closed or restricted for 10 days of that due to the fire at Joe Rich.

Most of the course was out on open ski runs. Several rock drops like this on the upper third of the course. It was built completed just a week or so before the race and with the dry conditions it proved to be very loose and raw.

The 5 m rock drop out of the start was pretty wild for a provincial level event. There's a tent and several officials and timers up there but we can't be seen because of the sheer drop. You can just see one of the timing photocells on the left skyline.

My last impression of BW in summer was virtual moonscape. Yep, they have a lot of rocks.

    The Cliff area, more rocks.

Finish line and bike pits were right in the village.

This nice cruisy flow trail is the centrepiece of the park right now. They roughed it in last fall and went in with an excavator at beginning of June to clear off the snow and start the finishing work. Just as well they located everything with GPS back in October because there was 3-4 m of snow to remove.
