I have it on good authority from a Perisher staff member that Blue Cow will close for the season on 10 September with lessons ceasing the week prior to this. Make the most of it while you can, people!!

I'd like to think so but Perisher have stubbornly closed Blue Cow in mid-September the past few years - a crying shame given the snow cover is usually still good then. More about reducing cost, unfortunately.

Booooo. It feels like the season has only just hit it's straps. Why are we closing in a couple of weeks?

Wow, so that gives Guthega lodge owners 2 months a year to ski. Was probably less than that this year.

    Welcome to corporate Australia.

Well, Perisher has been that way [corporatised] since the early 80s when the Packer empire had a big interest in the place. Perisher Valley only at that time.. then the 'indpendent' Guthega got swallowed up in the Blue Cow swamp.... mire. Mess. History.

    Memories..

Guthega Resort was established in the 1950's along with Perisher Valley and Smiggin Holes, when improved access to the mountains, created by the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric scheme, and the associated influx of European migrants with skiing experience, stimulated the growth of skiing in New South Wales.

Mainly because of its "out of the way" location, Guthega remained a separate small resort, operated by Guthega Development Pty Ltd, with only a handful of lodges, few lifts, and limited patronage from day skiers, who had to contend with more difficult road conditions than those to Smiggin Holes or Perisher Valley.

In 1982 the Car Park chairlift was installed, which overcame the need for visitors to walk some distance uphill to the upper end of the village to reach the bottom lift, thus making the resort more appealing to day visitors.

In 1991, Guthega was purchased by the Alpine Australia Group Pty Limited, the then operator of the Blue Cow Resort. This led to the operation of two resorts becoming integrated in 1992, thus providing day access into Guthega via the Skitube alpine railway and the Blue Cow and Link Management Unit ski slopes.

10th is way too early. It is not even mid-September. I remember when that was when they started selling spring season passes. People should truly revolt if this happens.

Then, Perisher itself had some great ideas to improve Guthega/Blue Cow Mountain, back in the early 00s...

This more realistic and consistent with last few years with good late season cover.
They still have Balmain Cup on the 9th , Perisher Cup on the 16th.
I'm calling it be spinning till at least the 17th. on no good authority.

I tried to book private lessons at Bluecow next week and they are not available.
So I assume there is some credit to this.

Smiggins Ski School usually closes before Smiggins itself closes.

perisher need to do some PR to address these rumours. if they dont, best to just assume theyre true and its gone on the 10th.

meanwhile ill be holding off on my 2018 season pass purchase to see if this eventuates.

    Only for lifted terrain.
I got pulled up for hiking it for freshies before the lifts opened one morning.

Maybe the internet changed it lol.

I agree the conversation happens every season.
    But.
Vail kept resorts open past close in the states.
Maybe wishful thinking there might be an attitude shift.

Sometimes a general hue and cry pays off (emails to Perisher, anyone?). There is some (slight) possibility that Perisher may heed public opinion. BTW, my 'source' (ooh, I love that term - it's just like television) was one of the snow sports instructors at Blue Cow who should know what he is talking about. Lessons there finish on 3 September, while BC itself shuts on 10 September. It does seem earlier than usual ....

Have been skiing that week since our oldest started high school and Blue Cow has always been open. If they close it that early I will reconsider my loyalty to Perisher.

Supply and demand? I mean the resorts are locals and staff by then anyway. Sydney hits the off switch in a week at most.
