Dungey's Tk has opened and been scraped. Did the ford this morning; had to psych myself up for it. Walk the bike across or stand with a fistfull of throttle. Well, in for a penny.... Just before the exit there was a bit of a hole with a soft bottom. The front went across but the back sank in. Stepped off and walked the Terra out.

Saw more of Steve's fine picnic tables by the river. Good work mate.

But DELWP has put a gate just past the 2nd river link on the West Kiewa Rd so all that stretch along the river to the horse yards is blocked, sod it.

Interesting to know if these locked gate symbols >< are in any way current. DSE mapping.

Click each image for much larger. (It may be, that depending on your browser, a better option to "Open Image in New Tab" to get the true size. Forum software is reducing)

    ping.

Generally yes from my quick sampling; in fact there's probably more out there now.
The placement's a bit off. Take the W Kiewa Logging track - the gates are on the tracks running off it at Woollybutt Spur and Springs Ck.

DWELP are currently doing a heap of 'dangerous tree' clearing work along tracks in both the Kiewa catchments and there are additional track closures in place to support those works.

Just the old slipping-clutch mode. There's a button for it somewhere.

Returned to Melbourne via a track that I've long studied on the map and it's proved quite doable - the Goldie Spur Tk out of the Buckland valley. Climbs high, partly through NP, and gives a unique view of the south side of the Buffalo Plateau and The Horn and sweeping vistas of the high country to the south. Cobbler is somewhere on the horizon is this pic.

Bears on their recent forays have placed another table in the Big Logs Campsite:that brings nos up to three out there..
some blackberries got sprayed others cut and burnt....old log debri got further dismembered so its firewood size and manageable....:p

also a table went down at The Broad Ford(Dungeys track and West Kiewa...1st ford of day) this time on the Pyramid Hill side bank beside the track....we observed a major fallen tree right where this table was scheduled to go..near an existing fireplace...so future work will be to cut this log up so access is retained around there...

we are currently constructing our 15th table and its to go into this area of the Broad Ford to bring table nos up to 3 also down here....3 seems to be the magic management no for the Team Bears...;)

Now Ziggy has spelt out the bad news in regard to the temporary/temporary gate just upward of the Big Logs Camp:(:(:(..but the good news the dozer being used is a D6 and with its grunt has done a remarkable job in clearing Dungeys Track and also out to Big Logs Campsite:so the big logs are gone and its like a freeway into this site....dozer has done the existing loop just before the gate... ;););).

so shortly we will return to the West Kiewa to finish the installation of the final table into Broad Ford Campsite....and we will try to resolve the issue of the fallen tree in to the campfire too..

as Ziggy as described the Broad Ford(which previously has been a cake walk with tiny gravel and small rocks is a bit more bumpy after the 3mths of flooding down there..however the rodeo had no trouble negotiating this and didnot hit any rocks under neath the vehicle.....:thumbs::thumbs:

just back from West Kiewa..Team Bears been sorting out a fallen tree in Broad Ford Campsite...used lots of 2stroke and spent many hours cutting large fallen tree away from right behind frequently used fire place...some blocks rolled on end to form almost solid wooden tables/seats...can now drive around behind fallen log in circle..did some wipper snipping and cleaned up highly flamable gum leaves from limbs off this tree too....was a warm day ...we drove out in rain on a previous visit waiting for a better warm dry day to conduct this activity...Team Bears pretty stuffed after this effort so we are having rest day in Lygon St doing zero absolutely zero...

when 064 is working well its a great toy"":eek::eek::eek::eek:

rolling them upright needs one coach bolt placed at end of log dead centre and a sling over end of log with an easy pull on 4x4 to lever it thro 90deg....so easy with correct approach...;););););) fortunately the fallen monster missed the smaller trees and best of all nobody was camping there at the time!!!

DSE tell me that dozer D6 is finishing its work in next couple of days it has done work on the difficult fords(Stock route) and also been into Diamintina Horse Yards:so its done every bit of negotiable trail....

DSE expect the new tempory gate open over Xmas roughly 23rd Dec till 9TH January but after that it will be closed on and off as excavators remove dangerous trees from side of trails...

Any body wanting access should ring DSE for update prior to setting out...

so its most probable that its open during the xmas period of holidays....

nice pics....DSE have confirmed the new temporary gate is open come Friday23rd till 9th Jan so it is possible to drive all the way to Diamintina Horse Yards...as we have said the D6 operator from DSE has done an outstanding job and the track now will be at its best for at least a decade...;););););).

The DSE operator has done more productive work than that accomplished by all of the head office staff...a real return for funds spent for the general traveller...o_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_O.
Hope DSE crew and its D6 Operator have a very good and enjoyable xmas.....:love::love::love::love::love::love::love::love::love::love:

this is how funds should be used...not on some questionable management proposal with thousands forked out on consultants alone.....

enjoy your xmas to all on the forum regardless of your political leanings...

Went down Diamantina Spur on Tuesday. Track is mostly in decent condition. Bit overgrown towards the bottom in segments (though still easy enough to find the track), but a lot of slashing appears to have been done very recently to keep it mostly open. Only issue is all the recently cut brush is strewn all down the track and makes the track quite slippery on the steeper bits. Also collected and cut a little bit of wood at Dibbins but no doubt it'll be used up very quickly.

road good to Horseyards at moment(very good) but remember that it may be closed periodically as the excavators located near upper track and stock route recommence work after their holiday come the 9th Jan...

all tables have been wipper sniped around and horse yards got a little go over around campfire and on a couple of its little tracks
so the ten tables.....3 groups of 3 at major campsites and the one at concrete bridge are all good..;););) :):):):cool::cool: o_O

got to Stoneytops Top Campsite too and all tables also wipper sniped(three):D:D:D

track to barrier at Stoneytops Upper Camp is all good ...Bears got a bit of stuff out of hand as we came down....:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

Bears say they came out from Diamintina Horse Yards and over High Track then over Broad Ford over W.Kiewa in 2wd as track has packed down and is in excellent condition for vehicles of moderate ground clearance....so when its dry all is A ok down here....Rodeo done some bolts on power steering unit but we are drivable and another front wheel hub is shot by the sound of it...so we have repairs to negotiate with mechanic....again watch for deer on any of the tracks out here or your front end will be cactus....

both low route fords are rodeoable (no serious contact made underneath )as a gauge for your trips...we are missing a sump protection plate but if handled carefully you will negotiate both of these fords over the W.Kiewa...get out and walk them and move any problem boulders is always a good idea..

Was at the hut neat Langfords Gap a couple of days ago and the door is busted off its hinges. I think you need new hinges, not just screwing the old ones back in.

hopefully a local builder may lend a hand....cos i dont think Parks Vic will be too interested to fix it up...

this is the maintenance costing a few bob that is important...but Team Bears see Parks are getting a blasting over the use of credit cards in todays press....

somebody please go have a look and then take some supplies out there and a couple of cordless drills etc and just fix it up..
Bears too busy with other projects at moment.....we have been flat tack working on and off in West Kiewa....
but though we are getting pretty stuffed at weekend we are happy to be putting in some work...
Diamintina Horse Yards got a little attention over weekend with Wipper Snipper as did Concrete Bridge Campsite...

we also did a bit spraying of blackberries here and there..

but everything is looking good down there....and the roading work of the D6 was a wonderful event for this area..:p:p:p:p:p

i can well understand Parks Staff buying equipment but dining out seems a bit of a wank!!

and during fire season we can see that fast food and other purchases are necessary for crews.....

Feral Cats on the fast food cannot be good for their nutrition base....:whistle::whistle::whistle:
but Fat Cats Dining out aint good for the Tax Payers.....:thumbs::thumbs:.

but i suppose this is a low point for Parks Vic at moment and we appreciate some of their work and talent all the same....

Perhaps they are being let down in the higher ranks of management ......and most staff are probably too scared to air their personnel/professional views of the Iconic Walk Project in case they get shunted off....

Bears were heading up to Stoneytops Helipad to clear a little up towards Nth Peak but our 4x4 capacity failed so we ended up reversing down steep hill just after barrier....but we did a bit more work at the two initial Campsites on the West Kiewa.....so 2wd is ok on Dungeys Track and for first ford....

Sprayed a lot of blackberries all sunday around Big Logs Campsite(Briggs Old Logging Site)saw a few people fishing and a party of 5 trail bikes.....temporary gate closed above on West Kiewa Logging road a sign is up at Pyramid Hill Dungeys Track near season barrier warning of road closed ahead....we believe u can come in from Big Hill too to this point...

hopefully come Aust Day Weekend the tracks are fully open again at least for long weekend...

we seem to be holding our own with blackberries at moment...areas prepared as campsites with tables etc are pretty free of this feral pest...we just keep spraying at every visit but blackberries seem to be forming fruit now......:whistle::whistle::whistle::whistle:

these machines were parked at junction of stock route(lower route thro fords) and vehicle track junction over xmas...we believe these machines are still working we hope to clarify when the temporary closure will cease or will it open over Long weekend(Aus Day Weekend) now there are the 3 tables at this good campsite area...the downstream ford of the two ford complex(Island) has them in close proximity...the down stream ford is not to bad for vehicles if care is taken to cross ..the upstream ford needs to be given much more caution when xrossing...sorry some photos are a bit rotated and they are now a couple of weeks old....table production has ceased for time being as Bears consider there are ample in there at the 4 major campsites///the split is 3,3,3&1.the latter is the small concrete bridge campsite >>>>:cool::cool: ,:cool::cool: ,:cool::cool: &

Recently went up Bogong via The Grey Hills/ Quartz Ridge - the lower third of the Quartz Ridge track is filthy with fallen trees & the descent down Mt Arthur to the heli-pad site on the Big River fire track is so overgrown the path is frequently difficult to find. Nonetheless, another lovely route up Bogong.

Same as 15 years ago, all part of the charm of having a route to yourself.

Enjoy - all told a lovely route . I started at Howman's Gap, up Spion Kopje , then the Grey Hills, Quartz Ridge and then through from Bogong to Langford Gap via T-Spur & Duane Spur/ Mt Nelse (AAT like a highway). I cycled the 12km down from Langford Gap back to Howman's -in all a nice 3-day circuit. In retrospect I would have cut my pack weight by carrying less water to save my knees on the up & down - enough on the route - even in March.
