I was checking the Vicroads website today and the latest report was "Bogong High Plains Road CLOSED for duration of snow season Between Falls Creek and Omeo Highway. Alpine Shire expect to re-open the road in mid November 2019. Further details Alpine Shire 03 5755 0555, East Gippsland Shire 03 5153 9500 or Falls Creek 03 5758 1200". Last updated 17/10/2019

I expect it to open on Friday. EG shire have done their bit and it maybe the Alpine shire dragging the chain again. Email from FCRMB was opening this Friday. It was surprised when I read that notice on Vic Roads website 10 days ago. I went over the road a few weeks ago and it was pretty clear of snow and only a couple of trees to move. Much better than the previous year. Please don't hold me to my prediction but it is based on information direct from the EG shire person in charge.

I'll be keeping my eye on the closure, thanks. Either walking a drop in from Falls on about 8/11, or driving if able.

I left a supply drop near Faithful's hut which I did not use during the BC XC ski season. I must retrieve it ASAP.

Now should I drive up from Melbourne and see what’s left on the lee slopes of Nelse over the weekend...?

Leaving Friday arvo, bugger the traffic!

And I’ll take any weather I get....it’s not as if the snow is doing anything but melting.

Saturday will be the decider. Looking to be very windy also. Take care. Cup weekend over here is usually a bogan festival on the Mitta. Hibernation is over and with the 4wd tracks open, the campgrounds get crowded, swags and tents a plenty. The rain may change that. Usually after a long weekend with weather carnage, we drive through the camping spots and pick up all the crap left behind in their hurry to get away.
The motorbikes have been running through here for a few weeks already but smart move opening BHP road on Tuesday instead of Monday. The Phillip Island traffic is mostly over by then. And so it starts. The peace and quiet of winter is over.

I was at Nelse over the weekend. Snow and sleet all day Saturday. The lee side still had its usual drift running down the backside and into the gully towards Johnston Hut. It was significant and gave a few hundred metres of continuous snow, some of it pink from dust and some fresh/sleet blown over it.

I'll be skiing Nelse on Monday, as long as the weather clears from the weekend deluge....

Don't go posting photos of the skiable snow on Mt.Nelse or you will give me a dose of FOMO.

If the cold front that is forecasted to appear on 7-9th of Nov. delivers 10cms of snow above 1600 M. then Sat. week would be better for visiting Mt. Nelse. In a dream like scenario you could XC ski out to Mt. Nelse in NOVEMBER from the BHP rd. at Watch bed creek.

Starting to feel like the weather thread. 10cm above 1600 on BHP would be gone by lunchtime the next day in November and would not be skiable anyway. Dream on. The sad reality though is this coming weather event could turn the weekend into a movie marathon and will finish the season on BHP. At least we will get our water tanks filled but it will destroy the fishing for a few days, not that it has been good yet anyway. It will make @Wally happy. The Mitta may get a bit too high on Sunday and Monday which would put most off the river but it could be worth a trip up Sunday.

Bugger! Not sure it’s worth the trip from Melbourne. How much vertical do you reckon is in it?

Usually there is more snow visible from Johnston's hut . That slope faces south but the Eastern slope of Mt. Nelse North not far from the old Batty's hut ruins holds snow until December at least. I am waiting to see what the cold front next week brings. I live in hope that I can rock hop at Baw Baw or somewhere like that . Overall I am watching the surf report. Saturday at Point Leo could be the best of a series of rather flat days on the ocean.

    Thanks for the update BilbyBill!
Wow! Some snow still on Spion Kopje is nice.
The east facing slope of Nelse would still have about 80m vertical to ski, which when having to skin it up many times is plenty long! I've skiied Nelse late November when you couldn't see any snow on the hike out until you were basically at the bottom of Nelse!
Still looking at a Monday ski for the last turns of the year.....

Skied Nelse yesterday (Cup Day!) in very good weather - sunny for most of the time.
Took my (almost) 9yo out for his first ever backcountry ski which was really cool.
A few centimetres of snow on Monday night freshened the cover a treat.
About 100m of vertical skied - from 1845m to 1745m.
Cover was excellent, but very slow as old base was quite r*** affected.
Snow depth was a little less than I would have expected based on last 20 years of Cup Weekend skiing - about 30 - 40cm.
Hot Dogs for lunch was heartily welcomed.
No other skiiers out there, but on the way back to the car at Watchbed creek past a guy on a mountain bike riding with skiis.
Didn't have the heart to tell him we had already taken the best lines :)
    (plenty still out there though).
    Season 2019 done.
