I just heard on the radio that the Bogong Hotel in Tawonga was badly damaged in a fire last night. $1 M damage reported!

I heard it had completely collapsed. Some reliable information would be great from anyone around that area.

    Fire destroys Bogong hotel
    ANTHONY BUNN
    05 Dec, 2011 08:30 AM
Send photos to newsrooom@bordermail.com.au.< p>FIRE has destroyed one of the North East's oldest pubs, with the blaze ripping through the Bogong Hotel early this morning.
Wodonga-based CFA district 24 operations officer Mark Owens said there was little crews could do to save the historic site after arriving at 12.20am.

"It was a very hot fire," Mr Owens said.

"It's destroyed a lot of metal and there's nothing much left of the premises, only some of the internal brick walls - the rest has been destroyed."

The cause of the fire is still being determined with CFA investigation teams from Mount Beauty and Wangaratta to examine the wreckage today along with police.

The owners had left the hotel about 10.30pm.

At the height of the fire there were 40 firefighters and eight vehicles involved in tackling the blaze.

Damage is estimated to be more than $1 million.

    Can't add much.

I know more from local ABC radio than from locals. Almost completely destroyed apparently, although the façade is still up.

Very fortunate that it did not spread to nearby properties. Neighbours didn't get much sleep. Cops & CFA still there not long ago.

My gut feel is that won't be rebuilt, which is bad news for locals and for local accommodation businesses. The pub was supposed to be 125 years old and one of the oldest in the region. Very sad to see it go.

Firies did a good job then, if it didn't spread.
Sad thing in country towns - businesses are often only marginally viable, and if it's destroyed, there isn't the motivation to replace it [IMG]

I for one hope it is rebuilt, it was in such a great position looking onto Mt Bogong. Have had many good meals there going back to the late 70's.

Shame: the photo of the pub sign on the top of Bogong will have gone, too. That's the photo of the flight & landing that never happened [IMG]

I spent my 21st birthday there and had a great time. [IMG]

But then some friends bought me a mixed drink they called a "Rocket Fuel". I don't remember much after that...

Neither did Jimmy Barnes. But Don Walker remembered enough to immortalise it in song.

Rest in peace my dear friend. As I quote this post, I ponder if it's all just a mirage and an illustration of my inability to come to grips with your tragic demise. You will be remembered. [IMG]

So much for that. It's sitting as a vacant block now. I suspect Tawonga would need a good few thousand more inhabitants to make it viable.

RBT, booze buses and the nanny state made the pub game a bit tougher over the years.

There is a great deal more to this story but nothing to do with drunken drivers and the need to stop them before they kill your loved ones.

There was some discussion among locals about a cooperative effort to resurrect the thing.
But there's Settlers down the road, Dederang pub up the road, and now the Mt Beauty Country Club is being reopened as the West Peak Hotel. It will be supported like so many pubs by the pokies - another social scourge.
