The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has upgraded its website to provide advance warning of approaching storms and cyclones.

Senior forecaster Jeff Callaghan says BOM has doubled the forecast period for storms and cyclones to 48 hours.

He says the BOM website is already used heavily to track major weather events.

"People should be prepared for all our forecasts and as soon as we get any sort of systems developing we will be putting out information bulletins even before we start the track forecasts," he said.
