British skiers die in Mont Blanc fall in icy alps

Two British skiers have died after falling from steep slopes in particularly icy conditions on Mont Blanc in the French Alps.

Lt. Remi Pelisson with the mountain gendarme service said Monday that the two men were skiing off-piste in a popular area off the Grands Montets resort when they died Sunday.

A third British skier alerted rescuers but the men were found dead, Pelisson told The Associated Press. He said the two were apparently on holiday in Chamonix and were between 25 and 30 years old.

The British Foreign Office said it is in touch with French authorities and providing support to the victims' families.

This winter has seen heavy snow create dangerous conditions and disrupt transport across the Alps.

Not sure why anyone would be going off piste on the ice at the moment. Sad news indeed.

Chamonix area currently has an avalanche risk level as 2 (moderate). It's pretty well bonded. I'm in Chamonix.

The accident didn't happen on Mont Blanc but at Grand Montets in the Couloir du Chapeau. Accessible from GM lifts.

I'm always wary of reports in the immediate aftermath, but the plenty of people here have skied it and also climbed the big cliff in summer. It's well known, tricky and there's a specific route to take to avoid the consequential cliff.
Looks like the skiers followed tracks into the steep couloir, it was hard and icy, they went over the cliff.

Happened at 2100 mtrs- where the route cuts over the top of the ridge and cliffs need to be negotiated to gain the couloir proper. Not a good spot for ice.
