Perhaps these were never official, but wasnt St Christophers always Village 1, Village 1 was Village 2, Village 2 was Village 3 and Village 3 was Village 4?

And there seem to be double diamonds to the side of Chamois, but I swear that is pure cliff and there's no way you could ski down that.

I imagine that's largely a 'just' skiable 0.5% grade track just under the last part of Family Run, and only used in the case of breakdown of Howqua.

Who? The Mt Buller RMB (Resort Management Board) is accountable to the ratepayers (the people who don't just ski for 30 days and then head back to Melbourne)
Why? Cause Buller needs a council(I wouldn't want the Grollos to run the whole place) and that is what the RMB does, rubbish pickup, sewerage and of course rates.
What? To do council services plus running the toboggan runs, the complexity of Horse Hill and snow clearing. They do the building permits(not on the slopes) and even the cross country trails(the one to Stirling)

So essentially the Buller RMB is a council for a snow resort(not linked to BSL who runs the lifts)

Can you explain to me how they are accountable to ratepayers?

They aren't elected by the ratepayers. They are elected by the minister.

I would suggest there needs to be a mechanism for them to be made accountable to the ratepayers.

    Really
They have to be reasonable to the people who pay them or there will be a revolt.
Sure they might be accountable to the Minster but they can't just do what they want

RMB and reasonable are not words I would normally associate.

Ratepayers revolt? How would they do that exactly? Can't vote them out. Taxation with representation. Pure BS.

Surely you aren't suggesting the RMB model fits into any known type of democracy?

Maybe in the PRC. The Great Leader appoints those in charge to run a small fiefdom in the country side.

I said Democracy not the PRC
And what bad has the RMB actually done to the Buller ratepayers and other visitors
If it does bad, it is not viable

If RMB did nothing at all and did nothing wrong either it still serves no purpose.
RMB doesn't justify its own existence by what it did wrong, but what it has done and done right for rate payers.

Rate payers being every member and guest of any lodging on Mt Buller that all pay rates which are factored into their pricing.
Anyone who says overnight at Buller including non attending club lodge members are a rate payers.

Andy our bootfitter got this in an email today:

Unfortunately we have had to pull the pin on the Mt Buller apartment that we were in the process of purchasing. Lots of little hidden clauses and taxes in the full contract of sale that hadn’t been revealed, that made what we thought was not a bad deal quite unpalatable (bed taxes / huge body corporate fees etc etc). So we are no longer proceeding sadly!

This means that I will have to cancel our scheduled boot fitting on Tuesday. I am so sorry and hope this doesn’t inconvenience you.

I might try and reschedule with you a little later in the year before we go back to France as I am still wanting to have my elder daughter properly fitted and my husband is up for some new boots too, but I’ll leave it a few months.

I am disappointed, was really looking forward to getting my kids into the seasonal programs up there as I know that they would do well, but the yearly and ongoing costs are just too unrealistic. Might have to look at some other way......at the very least it has made the French Apartment look darn cheap by comparison, with very little outgoings and the added bonus of snow !

I hope you have a great Australian season and sell loads of boots!

Who? The Mt Buller RMB (Resort Management Board) is accountable to the ratepayers (the people who don't just ski for 30 days and then head back to Melbourne)

How can they be accountable to ratepayers when they have no say in the people who get the positions? They are appointed not elected.

Why? Cause Buller needs a council(I wouldn't want the Grollos to run the whole place) and that is what the RMB does, rubbish pickup, sewerage and of course rates.

How many high overpaid people do you need to outsource rubbish collection and sewerage removal? I would argue Parks Victoria could arrange that pretty easily. Or even assigning one person within the regional council to look after that specific area. And the statement 'and of course rates' nearly says it all. Is it rates for rates sake to pay the over inflated salaries?

What? To do council services plus running the toboggan runs, the complexity of Horse Hill and snow clearing. They do the building permits(not on the slopes) and even the cross country trails(the one to Stirling)

Name to me all of these 'council services' the RMB provide (not including staffing a gate at the bottom of the hill which could all be automated ala Hotham?).

So essentially the Buller RMB is a council for a snow resort(not linked to BSL who runs the lifts)

Where else in the world does this arrangement operate as such?

No surprise that RMB is encouraging people to buy private properties off the mountain instead.

What we forget here is that our resorts are not 'special'. This is the problem - for some reason we think they are.

You go anywhere else in the world, to any of the thousands of ski resorts, and they are just regular municipalities with whatever local government is the norm in their part of the world. Usually it's democratically elected.

The roads get cleared, the rubbish gets taken away, there's power, water, gas & sewage.

I was telling someone in france about the RMB setup and his response was classic: "Don't they want people to go skiing?"

If they are bad, they have no business. Take a look on Opening Weekend and you'll see they ain't doing bad.

How many high overpaid people do you need to outsource rubbish collection and sewerage removal? I would argue Parks Victoria could arrange that pretty easily. 1. They are not overpaid
    2. Parks Vic! Worst sewerage removal ever
    3. You need to pay rates and taxes to get government services. If your so anti-rates, you can pull out your sewerage yourself then

Name to me all of these 'council services' the RMB provide (not including staffing a gate at the bottom of the hill which could all be automated ala Hotham?).
    • Snow Clearing
    • Post
    • Sewerage
    • Water
    • Horse Hill (car parks)
    • Building permits
    • The very design of the village
    • Cross country trails
    • And the buses
Where else in the world does this arrangement operate as such?
Victoria. I'm not saying it's perfect but it's better than most of the other ideas put forth

The rest of the world has settled on a regular municipality. We should give that a burl.

The RMB system is the single biggest problem with skiing in Victoria. You can trace everything back.

Well the RMBs aren't going to admit that they are on a junket are they.

Don't think anyone is anti-rates. Just that everything they do could be done just like everywhere else in the world with the local council being responsible. Rather than a special, sole purpose body that really exists to justify it's own existence.

Snow clearing is not complicated business. Neither is working out how to collect garbage. Sewerage systems are a dime a dozen. Anyone can do that.

The best option is not an RMB it's the local council. If its not the best model why can you find 1000s of examples of it compared to three in the entire world like victoria. Answer that.

If this is how you think that the RMB is doing a good job then I can totally see why you think they work.

    Astounding. Truly astounding.

I'll give you a big clue as to what makes ski resorts busy and it has NOTHING to do with the RMB. It's white and cold. Got any idea?
