As mentioned in the reports thread I though I would close it and start a thread for the usual banter amongst the Buller regulars. So whether it's Wanchor SUVs, Lego, Overseas Trip Planning, Development rumours, post away & enjoy summer!
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread Well, i for one need to do some maintainence work on the lodge over summer, so i plan on being up there sometime in jan of feb (when i should be in japan or somewhere with snow). This year im gonna take the camera and spent a day out around the summit taking photos of the chutes on both sides, waterfall area and the western face. Those sorts of photos seem to be pretty scarce, so it would be good to get some going.
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread Yeah that would be cool to get those photos. You ski areas so much better when you know what's underneath. I know Hog's Back pretty well so I'm comfortable skiing it pretty fast but would love to get to know the Chutes a lot better.
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread Wooo --- I'm part of a 'Crew' Not sure if I'll make it to Buller this summer..last year we had a great summer holiday in Mansfield, but this time we're heading up to Mt Beauty over Christmas/NYE. Then again, maybe I'll be up in early May again for some turns? CarveMan - the question I asked in the other thread:
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread They are probably gone. I do remember making that dig though! The old forum software used a database structure that used to severely tax the processor on the server, so most sub-forums had pretty regular purges, it's only Q&A, Weather etc that go way back. Also it had to do with the length of threads. Now the database is structured differently so it doesn't matter - so everything from the last couple of years will be here for posterity, but unless other threads were specifically archived they are gone.
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread Good work Carve Well, on the MTB front, do any on here ride? I hope to get to buller over summer - and in addition a few guys in the WRX club head to lysterfield 1-2x weekly over the warmer months So if anyone is keen for a pedal - make it known
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread I think because we've all seen hogs back exposed so many times it's easier! Yeah ive been up there a few times over summer to the hut and it really is scary the rocks and sharp edges we ski over in the chute area. It may look scary in winter but go up there in summer and you'll think 'damn, do i really ski this?!'. South chutes are a lot rockier and dangerous looking than the northside stuff aswell. Oh, i heard a rumour that they're going to discuss with long-time buller wanchors and next year's trail map will have runs such as the following: lois lane, hangmans, hogs back, poma etc marked on the map. I also heard from the buller locals there will be a public stoning the day the 2010 trail map is released. Coincidence?
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread Rather ironic, as my older posts were of far more use than all the crap I post these days...
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread Bloody hope not. Apart from the stoning that is. I know where I would start
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread Hoggs Back has been on the trail map for the entire season you goose Vermillion!
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread There was a black diamond at the top of hangmans one year (maybe last year). Didnt last long. No one needs to know.
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread Yeah but you can see that run anyways, not a big secret. The others though...
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread The irony is that a nerd with a trail map has no hope against a seasoned local tha can navigate by braille. Anyway it's best not to give a sucker an even break.
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread Even with a trail map, Hogg's Back is very hard to get to for most people because you can't see most of the run from the chairlift. You really have to traverse across...and know when to 'turn right' down the hill. I reckon Hangman's is vastly overrated and the last 100 metres or so would be an absolute bush wack...but then again I've never skied it. How large are you guys anyway? I'm 6' 3" and 95 kgs..so I find Aussie tree skiing a bit 'tight' sometimes.
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread 5' 7" 85kgs Yes Hangman's is terrible, stay away. Also you're right on the entry to Hog's Back, however there is a useful landmark that I happen to use mx_boarder has been through that way with me, it was part of that day when my eyesight was failing and I couldn't see many signs.
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread Shut up or ill have to do the moderating! 5'10" and 90kgs. I only have problems when i need to keep my skis close together cos my legs are too bloody wide. If you havent skied hangmans, you dont get to comment CM when was the last time you did lois lane or any of the trails in there? I reckon mine would have to have been '07 or maybe '04 before that. Needs a lot of snow to be do-able.
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread Did Hangman's last year. Skied it heaps in 07 too which was my last full time year. Really explored that area in '04 though - that season was great, I spent a lot of time with gutsy teenagers that were happy to explore, so I tried out every theory and potential line I had, as there was generally enough snow to get you through most areas.
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread Yeah im sure it was 04 when i spent days through there giving stuff a go too. Good fun to ski with 1.2m+ base, can be sketchy at other times with all the creeks running through there. Here's hoping for a better season in '10 with a good base to keep us going through. Some stuff on the Northside i havent skied properly since '04 that i need to ski again.
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread Speaking of good seasons, i can remember hitting some great lines the bottom half of federation in '04 well off the main run. Any ideas as to the level of summer grooming being done? Anything more than the usual crap?
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread Says who? Ill have to admit ive done some of my own in years past whilst out bushwalking/bashing, maybe. I may or may not have moved a rock/shrub off maclaughins that gave me a core shot the previous season, my revenge!
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread Also on that topic, there has to be some sense in this, otherwise runs will require more and more snow to be skiable, making them more and more un-skiable for the majority of the season, and totally unskiable in poor seasons. I remember when i first started on blacks being able to ski robins and powder keg on the same snow you ski outer edge and have good cover. Robins especially has grown up on the trails in recent years, requiring much more snow to be skiable.
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread Therein lies the rub. I know they can't touch the Plum Pine, which is pretty think in Wombat Bowl & under Fed Bluff.
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread Nice one!!! I so wish that was on an X6 or Cayenne Turbo though!
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread endless stirring if that were the case! its headed for toorak too
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread If someone gave me an A8 I'd sell it ASAP and buy a 135i and import a 535d station wagon from England. BTW how nice was James May's co-driver tonight?
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread ive always liked the 135...and its growing on me further a mate in the wrx club has just ordered one...hmmm
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread She was spanking for an airhead, although she would have been putting it on at least a little bit. Id be selling it and ordering a R35 GTR thanks. Or maybe an IS-F and a RX330 for the shopping.
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread That's a young man talking... When you get old you prefer a little bit of pampering to go with the performance.
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread ? I thought she was a ditz. Not my kind anyways, needs brown hair.
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread It was my first choice but ended up getting the Golf for $20k less. Hence me going for the R32 over an Evo or STi
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread The in car camera was well placed for maximum viewing pleasure.. What a typical wanchor thread.. starts off with summer activities, moves to the secret buller spots, complete with threads of moderation and finally onto pricey cars exclusively on the luxury car tax list. All it needs now is some lego.. My dream car right now is the new RX 450h. Make it plug in and that is the best SUV ever made! Im hoping to do some hiking/venturing pre season fitness over the next month or so up there. Ill definitely take the DSLR.
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread they do a little summer grooming, just the odd maintenance jobs but nothing too serious
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread EVO or STi? Wash your mouth out, they're both ricer cars, no need to lower yourself down to them. I would be very disappointed if you had bought the mitsu or subaru over an R32. EVO/STi/Skylines sorta remind me of the de-motivational poster with the VN commo that had the caption 'just like assholes, everyone has one, but only gays are into them'.
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread Might see you up there H20 if you wait long enough. Take some good shots for us!
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread If 20K fell from the sky I'd be very tempted to splash out on a Makinnen EVO VI. For 'ricer cars'...they sure did a good job of dominating the WRC for years.
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread Id be spending it on an RX7 thanks. I think Tommy would have won in almost any car, lucky for mitsu it was their car.
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread You dont think RX7s are a ricer car? All of the japanese performance cars are fantastic, its the mentality/modification style of many owners that give them a bad name Aus delivered Evo 6 - theres a car im glad i didnt buy. Circa $80k when they were sold here - then the 8 was released for about $55k !!
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread Yeah i think they ran on the name it was getting in WRC to bump the price up, and didnt really care about looking at where they could save some cash on the componentary. Series 6-7 RX7s are not ricers, they are too expensive to be riced up, and they're rotary's. I think anything made by Honda, Skylines, Pulsars and anything FWD 'performance' from Japan is a ricers car. Honda Civics may well be the worst offenders.
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread Keep an eye out, i see plenty of S6 RX7s with big chromes, huge front mounts and glittery "epping brake n clutch" stickers on the back window! Still love them though and would happily drive a nice original late model I think the reason the Evo 6 was so expensive was it was an ultra limited edition, low numbers, and all handled by Ralliart. From the 8 onwards, it was a Mitsubishi Aus effort, with full factory backing and a lot more volume.
Re: Buller Crew Summer Banter Thread on the topic of audis... http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/frankfurt-2009-audi-e-tron-concept/ Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen – the very guy who got into so much trouble last month when he criticized the Chevy Volt and other electric cars – has said that Audi will be bringing the fairly insane (3,319.03 lb-ft of torque!) e-tron concept to market. The e-tron, based on the Audi R8, should be available in the U.S. in two to three years, de Nysschen told Automotive News. Running examples should be on the roads sometime in the next two years. The e-tron seats two and gets up to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds from its 313 hp and four electric motors. The 53kWh li-ion battery pack (42.4 kWh of which is usable) gives the e-tron a range of just over 150 miles using the EU combined driving cycle. Talk about chassis twisting!!
