Last year I think it was Buller introduced that Day Visitors no longer required chains, I think it was only 4WD/AWD and it caused great debate on here

This year they choose to determine on a day-to-day basis if day visitors need chains

    http://www.mtbuller.com.au/winter/wheel_chains.aspx

Thing is, it has never changed, today perfectly sunny and no forecast rain/snow they want all day trippers to carry chains

Anyone have any other knowledge on this?

Freeze thaw perhaps? Worried about the road freezing up and people needing chains on to get off the mountain if conditions change?

Snow either side of today, so I do not really blame them, and it has been like that most of this season so far.

Give it time, I think they are just being justifiably cautious.

Checked out all my emails of the reports

went up sunday 24 June - report was no chains required - quite warm , clear blue sky

    22 june & 23 june - chains 2WD only
    25 june - chains 2WD only
26 June until now - all visitors require chains

also what trappers says - weather either side

so they do seem to change it - but there has to be some caution - can you imagine the carnage if they were not conservative. I believe a quote from Apocalypse Now is appropriate - "the horror... the horror"

your first post has no date stamp so hard to comment on that day
    but
tuesday was forecast for snow showers with blizzards on wednesday and thursday.
I have travelled up buller nearly every day over the past few weeks or been in a shop hiring chains.
The ice on the roads has been horrendous with more than one vehicle falling victim to the ice, quite often no snow in sight, just ice.
The chain decision is made to keep everyone safe on the road.
the decision on the chains is made by teh RMB about 4 pm the day before based on information gained from various sources.
