Bummer man - which ski manufacturers/brand won’t survive COVID 19

I went all good karma in my favourite ski dot commers thread, but I also can’t help stop thinking at least one major ski manufacturer/brand won’t make it to the other side if there’s another restricted northern winter. I have no insight into which manufacturers are on a solid footing or have deep pockets parents (other than maybe Amer Sports for Salomon/Atomic and Head for Head), and which are in a more precarious financial position. And I’m definitely not death riding - I want them all to survive and thrive. That said, any thoughts? I’d be gobsmacked, sadly, if they all made it to the other side.

That’s a surprise, but good news.

Then again I’ve never bought more new stuff as I have this past 6 months or so. 2 new pairs of skis, 3 pairs of bindings, goggles and helmets. My ski budget has been diverted to gear when I can’t ski. Maybe lots are doing the same?

For some people there is clearly spare cash ( diverted from OS trip budgets?). I know a jewellery store in Canberra that is crazy busy, with some very expensive custom commissions.

Besides a bumper ski gear year (pre-lockdown) I’m now up rollerblades and a new mountain bike - many people buying in substitutionary ways.

Also, look at what the AUD has done post-Covid.

Wonder how local leisure demand in the US, Canada, Japan and Europe will do for resorts there in the context of reduced international and regional travel?

The resorts were plenty busy this summer once bike parks reopened. Alberta has no DH mtn biking of nite because their side of the Rockies is all locked up in national or provincial parks which ban DH. So business as usual at the big bike parks. Out in the bush at large, there has been a huge surge in camping and RVing. Sales of all types of equipment have been setting records. Campsites are slamming busy and its common to see people camped next to a logging road with no water nearby because even the primitive Forest Rec sites are all full.

Busy resorts like Whistler are announcing a reservations system for ski season, but not yet hearing that talk from places like BW, SP or SS. No doubt they need to check their plan with the public health authorities but it sounds like they'll ask everyone to mask up in the queue and on the chair, restricted spacing in restaurants and pubs. Most people already use a buff or other face covering, this should be easy.

Plenty of Americans who are ski forum members are still planning to ski. The number of newbies asking for advice about buying ski gear was about the same over the off-season (Jun-Aug). People are coming back to the ski forums at the usual time (late Aug). The difference is that there are people who don't plan to fly outside their home region where there are small hills but no big mountains for powder skiing.

Parking could be an issue for some mountains that may well see higher demand. That's been true in the mountains of NY and New England all summer.

But that's getting even more off topic. ;)

I can tell you DPS will still be around. I don't think many will go to the wall. They had a full sell in season last year and based on our experiences in the southern hemisphere buying was still strong. We probably suffered the most with the timing whereby retailers didn't take up their orders. Then there was a mad scramble to get orders in which did and didn't happen in some cases.

From a DPS perspective, our factory converted our die cut machine to making face masks in combination with Petzl another Utah based mountain products company most would be familiar with. That meant we could keep all staff employed throughout the main Covid period in the US. We're still providing face masks for Utah hospitals and medical centres etc. Also selling to wholesalers and retailers in the US. We're not allowed to export any face masks however by order of the Govt.

We received various awards for stepping up and Utah state govt was extremely thankful for our efforts. That was a nice thank you.

    Good work to DPS!

I’ve really been impressed with the build quality of DPS. While the Wailer 105 Hybrid T2 was probably just too much ski for me, I’m really looking forward to getting my new Wailer 112’s in powder in the trees in Japan in 2021.

You mean "face shield." I got one in case I want to have something in addition to a cloth face mask on the plane rides for my ski trips this season.

FYI, last winter I bought the Yvette from someone who lives in SLC. :)

Its interesting. The people who had no impact on income, must usually spend a shitload on stuff that they cant so much at the moment (which is the impacted jobs, tourism etc), so they actually have more free cash, and guess what, most of them spend it.

I’d normally get on the juice once or twice a week...maybe a dinner as well. I’d need to spend more on clothes for work...of course skiing (season pass, accomodation, transport etc) as well. I’ve only skied 2 days this year so far. Normally by now I’d be up to at least 15 days.

LOL, one of my colleagues has done similar. Was going to go from a small apartment in Mosman to a large apartment in Mosman, and decided to stay in the apartment and buy a place in the country as well. Worked out cheaper as well (bizarrely).

Give that man a cigar. Yes Petzl is a french company. They've had their US office is in SLC for over 20 years and like many european companies a lot of administrative duties are carried out in the US subsidiary. I worked for one who actually moved their head office from Salzburg to the US.
