We are heading to Myoko & Nozawa, and our tentative plan is to arrive in Tokyo and head straight to Nagano, spending the night there.

For our previous Japan trips we've always spent some time in Tokyo and hit the shops in Kanda. This year I want to invest in my own skis instead of renting and thought I should be able to buy something in Nagano. I know we could get to Kanda before going to Nagano, but it would be more straightforward to go straight through and shop in Nagano.

For those in the know, what are the gear shops like in Nagano city, and are there options within striking distance of Nagano station?

Any thoughts or advice? Thanks in advance.

I'll be stopping in Kanda on my way to Sapporo for my trip next year to go boot shopping. Sounds like choice and pricing makes it a worthwhile detour.

If you insist on buying in Nagano though: you might find some decent deals at Xebio or Sports Depot, they're worth a look. Then start looking in the more specialised stores, the board shops seemed a bit scattered around when I was shopping this year. Not totally sure about the "ski" shops. I found something to buy for a half decent price though. It's a lot easier doing it with a car as the stores were quite spread out down the main road.

Thanks for that, I'll see if Google translate can help me with their websites. I'm looking for skis. Husband is looking for a board, but will likely get himself sorted before we go.

    Thanks

@blowfin I can see why you've recommended a car. The locations look pretty inconvenient to the station and each other. We weren't planning on hiring a car, so might need to rethink that or just shell out for taxis.

Yeah I was planning to do this without one last year, it would have sucked a bit, some of the shops don't open until 1pm too. Fortunately a knight in a shining N-Box came to my rescue.

They're not hard to get to by bus.

That's good to know. I haven't been able to find much info online re: Nagano city busses.

We won't get there before 1pm, so that shouldn't be an issue.

For some reason it only comes up with train options or tells me to walk!

Around 9.40 at Haneda. The plan was to go straight to Tokyo station and get the shinkansen to Nagano, leave our luggage at the hotel and spend the afternoon/evening there.

I know it would be possible to leave the luggage at Tokyo station and head to Kanda, heading to Nagano later. But it's a bit more faff than I was hoping for.

Xebio has a massive Don Quixote across the road as well. Which is random fun.

Seems to me that it will take way more time and trouble to get buses, etc, to various places in Nagano, than to just spend 5 min by train and a 5 min walk to Kanda.

Yeah, it does kind of look that way. I guess my other motivation for wanting to do this in Nagano is that we never end up seeing any other part of Japan except Tokyo & the ski towns. But I guess schlepping around looking for skis isn't exactly sightseeing Nagano's greatest hits.
