    Hi Guys,

Just wondering where is the best place to car camp on the Bogong High Plains Rd between Mount Beauty and Falls Creek?

All I basically need is somewhere to pull over in my 4WD away from the traffic so I can crash Friday and Sat nights there and do day trip to Falls.

Also - are 4WD's required to carry chains as a day trip to Falls?

    Thanks
    John.

Sounds like a search for the nearest public toilet. Thats all you really need.

I don't actually even need that - just a turn off area where I can safely park - at buller there are 3 such areas before the gate which are very convenient - I just cannot remember the exact locations of turnoffs like this before the gate at Falls as it has been several years since I have been up there.

    Thanks,

    John K.

I'm not sure what the rules are but I would've thought the Fainter Falls carpark might service your needs.

I'm pretty sure all vehicles 2WD or 4WD are required to carry chains to any resort in Victoria.

The mountain bike park if your heading from Mt beauty to FC it'll be on the right side of the road.

Yes you will face on the way up a sign with the no entry icon and wither of these words:

NO ENTRY UNLESS CHAINS CARRIED OR

    NO ENTRY UNLESS.CHAINS FITTED

AND IN ALL CASE THE WORDS

    ENGAGED 4WD.EXEMPT.

Forgive my ignorance here - does this mean 4WD's are exmpt if driving in 4WD mode?

    From Falls Creek Web site:

    •DO I NEED SNOW CHAINS?

YES YOU DO! Snow chains are a legal requirement for ALL vehicles entering Falls Creek alpine resort. All vehicles (including 2WD & 4WD) must carry a pair of snow chains even when the roads are clear during the declared snow season. Random checks from police will be carried out during the season and fines do apply. Snow chains can be hired from various ski hire and service stations on your way to Falls Creek or you may wish to purchase/hire them before you commence your journey. There is designated snow chain fitting bays along the mountain ascent so make sure you are aware of how to fit chains correctly. Make sure you have a torch, towel and a plastic sheet as you never what time of the day or in what conditions you may need to fit snow chains!

You gotta carry them, not necessarily fit them.

Drive down into Bogong Village and either park down near picnic shelter:fluorescent lights will work from switch!!!!Water nearby and toilets....or alternatively drive a little further in the village to another picnic ground where two rivers meet just past hydro dam installation..its very nice down there and away from traffic(nice fir trees)...well protected from weather but not too many trees overhead.
Other forum members will be able to tell you the name of this little recreational area.....

Have heard of folk pitching a hike tent to overnight in Big Hill Mountain Bike Park. As posted, on the right as you leave Mt Beauty.

Bogong Village is about half way there. IIRC once you've turned into it from the BHP road the spot US is talking about is reached via the 2nd road on the right - an acute turn. Look for the tennis court and power station, cross the bridge and you're there.
