Low vis and gusty winds at kicking horse saw the gondy offline for most of the day. Was r@ining at village level until morning tea then turned to fat flakes. Has been snowing on and off for the last 5 ish hours. Hope tomorrow brings the goods
Anyone in BC this month would be well advised to head for Apex. The last 48 hours has delivered 70 cm of true powder on top of an already healthy base. Beyond the immediacy of powder day conditions, try to stop in for a look at this underrated gem whilst it has exceptional base for its partially rain shadowed location. With two more months of skiing, it is likely to surpass the near mythical 300 cm base level, allowing exploration and rock free fun not often to be had (locals refer to it as Scrapex for a reason....).
OMG I feel like I'm in Japan with snowfall numbers like this. Hard not to like global warming in this specific case. Once again I am ditching work for the morning and heading up to Apex.
Decided to skip the weekend warriors at sunshine and the lake today and went to the mighty 'quay. Textbook definition of dust on crust!
At Panorama this week. It’s basically ice from summit to base. Apparently they had rain a week or two ago, no new snow and very cold weather. It’s slick, didn’t venture out to the bowl probably due to an abundance of caution. Great hill, with fresh snow it would be epic. Village is right at the base of the lifts. Lots of hot pools and spas and good food. Probably hire some skate skis tomorrow and follow the Nordic trails
Attending today's meeting of the Vancouver Retirees' Midweek Fair Weather 11am to 2pm Ski Club at Cypress Mountain today... The Lions close up: Looking at Howe Sound, Bowen Island and Gibson's Landing off in the distance: Pretty cool being able to ski down a run and look at Vancouver city, Vancouver Harbour and English Bay: The mountains in the distance are Vancouver Island. The views today were spectacular the whole time we were there.
Thanks @northsail and @chunky. Just taken with a smartphone - but the conditions were so good you couldn't help but to take ok photos!
Great photos.. Cypress Mountain was the first place i ever Snowboarded.. Every time i am in Vancouver i try and get up there.. Night skiing looking over Vancouver and the harbor.. magical place
Just announced: Canada has closed its borders to everyone except its own citizens and permanent residents, and U.S. citizens.
And, Grouse Mountain (another Vancouver town mountain), which said on Saturday it would remain open this week, has announced it is "suspending all operations" from 6pm today. Mount Seymour, the third Vancouver town mountain, is closing for the season from 5pm today.
Yep, I'm outta here. No planes coming in = none to take me home. Leaving no later than the week's end.
Flights end midnight this coming Sunday. Weasel must have changed flights to get on something between now and then. Must be a mad scramble for seats with so many Aussie and Kiwi youngsters over here now suddenly out of work. Ditto for Canadians coming back. There's an estimated 300,000 in Mexico alone, no way the remaining few flights can bring them all back. Of course many will have driven there but that's not an easy choice either. I have friends driving back right now from their place in Yucatan, a 3000 km race to the border with Trumplandia before he gets it in his head that Corona Virus is Mexico's fault and closes it down. They can relax a little once they're in the US because Canada won't deny them re-entry, but the Americans will almost certainly handle their southern border differently than the northern one, they always have.
