This thread is for discussion of weather forecasts and observations in BC and Alberta - because they are largely (somewhat...) covered by the same system/s

I must admit I find it much harder to interpret the charts for the Pacific NW than I do charts for Oz and Japan for example. But want to learn more.

That said, looks like a solid early start to the season already and more on the way in the next few days, and then again at the end of the 7 day period.

    Current approx mid mountain bases:

    Whistler 1m plus
    Big White 50cm plus
    Kicking Horse 1m plus
    Lake Louise 70cm plus

This link http://www.weather-forecast.com/maps/Canada is of a fairly simple synoptic animation which currently shows what appear to be the three main weather patterns that affect BC and western Alberta - polar lows (for snow, like), big cold highs (bluebird days), and the Pacific NW low which are a bit like our ECLs I guess, (don't like, and appear to be the bringer of a lot of that Whistler cement which can happen with regularity)

Good numbers in Kicking Horse these past couple of days. From their FB page - "In just under 24hrs we have received 56cm of snow. There was one hour we received 8cm and another one 10.6cm!"

great early season start for KH, typically that place doesn't get anything like the numbers of revvy of Whistler, however it tends to stay a lot colder there so less melt and better quality snow :)

Some instability over eastern BC and the Rockies over the next few days should see some nice top ups.

Whistler forecast to get pasted this week as a series of lows roll in off the NE Pacific. Unlikely to see snow to village level but the alpine should see good accumulations (up to and beyond 1m) to fill in more terrain and set up a solid base for the colder weather (and hordes of Aussies) to come. These systems look like they'll also deliver reasonable top ups into the BC interior.

Keeping an eye on this one for sure.
Looking like a good wet base builder. Still some holes on the steep alpine that need filling in for the season and this could set it up.
Nice start to the season, el nino who????

Looking at some serious falls on the coastal BC ranges above 1200m for a good week.
Could see 1.5m potentially, starting tonight.

All the hard work they have done down to the village with the snowmakers might all be in vain after this system.

Mountainwatch now going for 231cm over the next seven days, which is nothing short of hilarious. But, stranger things have happened.

Looks to have dropped about half a meter thus far at Whistler. Probably not the stupid totals being thrown around but more to come in the next few days.
Freeze level looks to rise on Tuesday to about 1500-1600 which isn't great from mid-low mountain.
Up high still looking at way over 1m accumulation easily from these systems.

My family arrived at Calgary - Canmore on weekend.
Only light falls at eastern Rockies resorts.
They will be watching the women's world cup at Lake Louise today before the kids start their training program.
Forecast is for pleasant conditions .

Love the horse, not so much Big White out. Overrated IMO

Watch, you'll find that resorts like the ones around Banff won't get a lot of snow now (like they did a few weeks back) as it will get colder and colder as they plunge into the dark depths of winter.....

Rain today from around 1800m unfortunately, but the snow level should drop later tonight, then drop another 30-40cm.
Colder temps towards the weekend should see snow down to village level, not as much but 10cm possible at that level but more higher up, another 15-30cm possible.
The resort will be looking great this time next week.

Yeah fluctuating snow levels as usual. Alternating warm and cold fronts off the North Pacific. Alpine not open yet I noticed; have to be soon...

Lake Louise getting excellent falls today.

The weather has been interesting so far this season. Really far more typical of La Nina than El Nino. In fact there hasn't really been a typical El Nino pattern yet at all.

Cold and snowy in Whistler over the weekend with freezing level down to the village and falls in excess of 25cm. Be great if they can get the alpine open soon.

Good snowfalls again in WB on Saturday and into Sunday, 42cm in 24 hrs. Interior also getting some but not as much, eg Fernie 18cm in 48 hrs. Calmer conditions into this week. Random current snowpacks:

    Kicking Horse 134
    Big White 150
    Whistler 185
    Fernie 160

Yep, with good temps also this time, meaning no clear stuff from 1000m and above.
And should be village level snow from friday onwards.
Should see at least another half meter over the 4-5 day period.

Sustained snowfall set to continue in Whistler and the colder temps will make conditions ideal over the next week. Damn you! to those lucky enough to be there now. These systems will spill into the interior bringing reasonable top ups to the likes of Big White, Fernie, KH et al, but less love for the Banff area further east. And then perhaps some stronger high pressure into New Years...

Been pretty dry in Banff recently, not much on the forecast too, Sunshine is great Monday was really good (20cms in some parts), avoid Lake Louise as it is really icy there. Just going to work over the next few weeks and wait for the tourists to move on out, fingers crossed for bigger dumps in the new year.

Dusting overnight in Banff, but snowing all day, looks like a bit more tonight before that spell of fine weather, might even pop up above freezing next week.

15cm of fresh overnight and today at Big White. Bit of wind and cloud up high but quite benign once you drop a few dozen metres. Surface is light and dry and boot deep everywhere. All the Okanagan resorts doing well out of this. Light snow forecast for a day or two more. Not pushing further inland unfortunately so Kicking Horse and Banff for example still have to wait for more joy.

Coastal resorts will see that snowfall tomorrow, 20cm forecast for whistler with excellent temps meaning village and below level snow, with a super solid base now, a light dry 20cm would make the mountain amazing.
3 weeks yesterday to wheels up, starting to get a little giggdy. Looking at long range forecasts now which fall into my skiing window. Need to remember to take with a grain of salt though.
