My eldest is in the planning stages if a working holiday in Canada from Feb/March 2020 for up to 2 years. Heading initially to Toronto.

Given that he is particularly hard to buy gifts for, what would be your suggestion for items that a 22 year old young man might need for an extended Canadian stay. There’s both Xmas and a birthday coming up. He has thermals and a decent travel bag already :)

Apart from cash, something smart and portable would be good.

How about a experience gift - something he may not have the funds to do if he had to pay for it himself but would be a great experience. A zip line tour, heli flight to a glacier in summer, climbing course, backcountry ski day or even something like hockey tickets.

+1 on the winter boots. E.g. Sorel men's Caribou boots.

Yeah I did think about hockey season pass but a bit late in the season. Heli tour sounds good.

He’s got boots. Pretty good for winter clothing. Though he did express a desire for a Canada Goose jacket

That would be the water in winter. Anything else is pretty horrific.

Kid needs to learn how to be a backpacker. When I was in London I bought a coat from the op shop and donated it back when I left!
