Flying in(to save a 19 hr drive) to Canberra and just wondered what would be best way to get to Lake Crackenback?
-Hire car (heard about extra amount to pay if going near snow ie.$35 extra a day)
    -Buses?
-get to Jindy and are there hire cars there?

i wouldnt call Crackenback in the snow, chaines arnt usually required to get there, only on during weather events such as we are having now, with snow to 1000mtrs or so.

Hertz and Europcar will let you take the hire car up to the Park Entry gates, after that you need snow cover.
For Avis and Budget, pretty certain you cant go pass Jindy without extra cover or when an "ordinary person would fit chains or when directed to."
Lake Crackenback is just before the Entry gates and I think they have a bus that does drop off/pick ups to ski tube .
You can also get Hertz hire cars from Cooma but your easiest option would be at Canberra Airport.

Depends if you need a car while you are there and how much you want to spend. If no and loaded, then some local transport companies might work out if there are a few of you with gear. We use CBD transport to get us to the Canberra airport when we are going o/seas (cheaper and more reliable than two taxi's). They service the mountains in winter.

About 5 or 6 years ago we looked into the idea of staying on mountain at Perisher and using public transport to get from Canberra Airport to Perisher/skitube.
All the buses tended to leave or go through Canberra early morning ,which meant an overnight stay in Canberra.
In the end we flew into Canberra, picked up a hire car and drove straight down to Jindabyne, in about 2 hours, and stayed there.

I'll have one spare seat Canberra - Bullock Flat (or Jindy, Cooma etc) for early Sunday 13th. Available to anyone without too much gear and willing to share the cost.

Just beware of the cost of the "snow cover". Almost double the base rate. And whatever you do, don't get their chains. Cost more for a week than buying a set two sets and throwing them away afterwards.

Good thing Bullocks Flat is considered "below the snow line". :)

And there's also a seat returning to Canberra on the afternoon of Sunday 20th. Same terms.

yeah, the snow package allows you to take it above the snowline.

last time I got it, I rented better quality chains elsewhere

When you book in just leave the ski gear away from the counter to save any questions.
The car pickup is on the ground floor of the underground car park and no one will care if you load skis into the vehicle,
Domestic travel insurance though someone like 1 cover is a cheap alternative to cover the $3500 accident excess.
There own extra insurance, plus sat nav, chains etc is a rip off.

If you fly to Albury airport, Falls Creek ismuch closer, with daily winter bus and helicopter shuttles. Airport to mpuntain is 1.5hr direct by car. Qantas were flying from Sydney to Hotham direct as well. Melbourne has lots of shuttles to Mt Buller.

Just be aware if you don't do the snow cover and you have an accident you are not covered at all for insurance

I wouldn't say much closer. Canberra Airport to the train at Bullocks Flat is a little over 2 hours (and once you get off at Blue Cow you put on your skis and head downhill). Thredbo is another 10 or 15 minutes. Assuming the OP is not coming from Sydney or Melbourne, to fly to Albury you'd have to change planes at one of those airports, so it would take longer and probably be much more expensive. And Falls Creek, while pretty, doesn't compare with Thredbo or Perisher in terms of number or length of runs or variety of terrain. Having lived both south and north of the border I've skied at all the major Victorian and NSW resorts, and the only Victorian resort that comes close to Thredbo or Perisher is Hotham, but of course without Thredbo's long top to bottom runs (of around 5 km).

Under the snow package, you are covered for all damage, apart from the excess of $3,500

your 1cover will cover ONLY the $3,500 excess.

so if you dont take out the snow cover and you crash, any damage in excess of $3,500 comes out of your pocket

Roadworks around Majura Rd and Monaro Hwy interchange upgrades are causing traffic delays for visitors to NSW resorts.

Totally agree, with gps in most cars the hire car mobs would know exactly where an accident happened.
