It just begs the question, Why?
They have one at Telluride. I think that the theory is that absolute noobs feel more comfortable walking into a cabin instead of riding a chair, while a lot of other people don't want to bother with clicking out of their bindings for a short ride. The Telluride one also serves some foot traffic getting from a low point to the same level as the Mountain Village. I don't know if that applies at Cardrona.
Avoids pile ups of noobs at the top?? I haven't rode McDougall’s in a few years. This lift stops more often than any other I know in NZ.
Its replacing a old fixed quad from the 80s about 500m long with 100m of vert...
My bad, 150m vert and 1km long hahaha.
The one at Telluride would have similar vert, but would be shorter I think. 830 m. Doesn't change the theory.
Think that answer would be "Chinese"
Yeah I agree, seems an odd investment. They need another lift for sure, there are some nice runs around arcadia / powderkeg which are under utilised mainly due to the long flat run back to Whitestar, that would be my pick for new infrastructure.
Macdougalls current lift is indeed slow and stops often and being a fixed grip constant speed used to see plenty of carnage in the offload area. Paradoxical that the beginner lift is trickier than the intermediate ones.
Verbier has a Chondola, never really figured out why.
Technically Buller does too I guess.
I'm clearly missing something here.
What's the purpose of the tunnel and where's the load point for the gondolas?
Craighelo has it IMO. Enhancing the Chinese real journey tour package. Nothing to do with riding.
mmm...wonder what's going to happen to the old McDougall's Quad? Is it worth refurbishing somewhere else?
I wonder who coined the tern 'chondola'? Certainly no Australian or New Zealander. It sounds too much like chunder.
Close all chairlifts!
Doesn't seem that difficult to understand
Gondolas to make it easier for rank beginners and quad chair for the rest
Says they can configure ratio of cabins to chairs as they wish presumably based on demand.
Being detachable allows easy loading for either chair or cabins
Presumably tunnel is a covered magic carpet for mentioned beginners area
Only artists rendition , presumably loading queueing area will be created during summer construction
Get with the program you lot
Does it increase uphill capacity so they can rapidly access, in the future, the back bowls?
a true gondy to nowhere
increasing the uphill barely means jack : Cardies real problems are no more terrain; low alt; transport/ parking full; rare low level snowline so that lower chair barely operates;
that 10mil would be better spent on more Apts / or restarting SnoPark ...
that tunnel is allready there
the back bowls are a different Soho cat-skifield.
still Cards is nice for a groomer 1st thing, then some easy ridge touring - and thanks to Soho for sharing
I wish someone pumped some coin into TC
There's a wharf and the gondolas go round the canals.
If you increasing you capacity from the car park to the peak ......"Uphill capacity: 2550 people per hour (current McDougall’s Quad has 1000p/hr uplift)"......i suspect a deal has been stitched up for access to Soho. No other reason to dump 10 million into this, no way they can grow the summer season to validate it.
Yeah saddle chair needs replacing. 6 seater, hi speed like the home basin
its perfect as is ,
low infrastr field, Big big terrain access, best nz snow, modest crowds , couldnt be better
what TC needs is to sort their Farmers lease end-Sept so they can run into Oct
A rope tow to the peak actual would be nice, not to mention a tow from below the whakatpu (however it's spelt) chutes would be nice too...
there's one like that at Zermatt
didn't worry me - just used the cars and avoided the chairs
it was never very busy anyway
The back bowls is a seperate ski resort.
But no, it doesnt allow access into Soho, Only captains does.
The one chair that has been approved for Soho terminates on the ridge to the North above Captains.
also worth pointing out that Cardrona arent keen to share power for soho hence why the chair wasnt put in this summer as planned..
Soho are putting in a chair?
Thats the intention yes, they have resource consent for a Detachable 6 Seater from the current lunch hut to the ridge near captains.
Sounds like they are keen on the "summer" market...
Really , when was the last to you spoke to them, as of last week nothing decided. Not to say that may change depending on the developers intentions.
Or they'll cater for more than 24 guests
Spoke to who?? about what?
RM140926 Check it out on QLDC eDocs.
I can think of a few of these in Austria - Kitzsteinhorn and Obertauern both have one... probably some other places too.
I think Cardrona had consent to redo their Power substation last summer....sure a deal has not been stitched up in the background Draizuh?
Recent updates to the resource consent say "lift to be constructed at a later date"
Last i heard was that they were going to widen the road out more...
Its not the telemix itself that is pointless, its its location and distance.
loading a gondola at speed is a bit of an artform. Usually they have a huge loading area where people can walk a fair distance around and load in whilst a lifty loads gear into external racks (if equipped) My concern would be that being a beginners lift the time it would take for 8 people to load into a cabin would be a lot longer than it would take 6 people to load a chair, which would mean a lot more stoppages or slow downs. hence any "advantages" in it being a detachable or a gondola would be moot. Its all well in good it being perceived as being faster, and statistics are fantastic. but the human factor can be a considerable slow down to all these intended benefits.
Woah woah woah. Dopplemayr has a really complex algorithm/system to make this work. There is traditionally three rope lines. The fast line, the slowest gondola detachable line and then the slightly faster chair detachable line. When the gondolas enter the terminal they take a different route and slow right down whilst the chairs go a bit faster. Its super hard to explain but the gondola cabins basically skip back 4 chairs every time they unload/load making the process work fast but the gondola access still being sweet slow for the noobs.
I understand the technical side of it. Im talking about the human factor. hence why i said " But the human factor can be a considerable slow down to all these intended benefits"
Just because the machine itself is running at speed doesnt mean the the humans running the maze will make it any faster. You seem to forget that the average punter looses all intelligence whilst on holiday. The amount of times ive seen people riding the bullwheel on fixed chairs because they "forgot" to get off is staggering.
I don't remember any particular carnage at Telluride. I rode the thing at least once a day, from my accommodation to the main lift base.
So many reasons why. Can't believe how negative everyone here is. Cardrona/RJs like to look after their staff. Ask any ski instructor who spends their days riding the current lift what they think of a new high-speed conformable lift and they will all be ecstatic.
Currently punters wanting to get from the base to captains all ski down all nations to whitestar, as do many of the people using the park. A high speed lift on McDs will be a great alternative way to access the park and captains, and will take so much pressure off whitestar.
It will be a great tourist operation for the summer - sightseeing and intro mountain biking.
8 Seater detachable would have been better bang for buck IMO.
more on Remarks 10km gondy,
at least this one has everyday annual tourist potential
whos gonna pay 75 bucks to ski when you can drive up???
Keen to see this happen but that price point is pretty shit!
Yeah so what? It's a resort ,what do you expect.
Must have increased visitation for all this........................good or bad?
Can't see that happening anytime soon after the crap start this year. They've just spent the first month of the season closed and, presumably, bleeding money like nobodies business.
If they made it free or cheaper with a lift pass that would be better. It would be a lot nicer than driving up.
Having said that to me the road is good, i'll just take the cheapest option. Maybe do it once.
$75, $37 each way. Needs to be more like $10-20 each way for skiers
Yeah if you factor in that people are already paying 20 bucks return for a bus from town its not too bad but you would need a lot more accomodation in frankton to get people using it properly (and of course a ****ing rocking apres ski bar right next to the gondola terminal ala Mayrhofen!) It does show promise but expecting punters to pay 175 dollars a day in lifts, no rentals no lessons no meals is a bit much... However much Queenstown thinks its Beaver creek its not.
Its getting to the point where we cant handle it without roading upgrades.. Decent public transportation + more visitor accomodation and facilities for visitors in frankton and it could be a goer.
Night flights from aussie plus the new ramada airport hotel and gondola within walking distance from the airport and the hotel is making queenstown into a fantastic weekend destination for aussies who can afford to do it.
Free shuttle running around town to the gondola base would be needed. Who knows this could actually ease traffic if it was the right price.
Why be so negative about this development????
Im sure they know more about the big picture for the resort and what will provide the best bang for buck that some kook on a forum.
At the end of the day as long as resorts are reinvesting its got to be good for the industry. Look at the resorts who's actually opened up any inbound terrain thats worth riding in the last decade? The last worthy developments was the saddle chair at tc and Round hills rope tow.
Are you sad about cardrona not agreeing to supply soho power?
