We are thinking about a trip next August, renting a house to stay in Castle Hill Village, and skiing Porters, Mt Cheeseman and whatever else is around that matches our abilities (i.e. mostly groomed runs).

I'm wondering about the main road (SH 73) that runs between Springfield and Castle Hill, as well as beyond towards Temple Basin / Arthur's Pass.

Does it get closed very often by snowfalls and when that happens does it stay closed for long or do they tend to clear it fairly quickly?

Just thinking about how we plan our trip and also occupy ourselves in the event of a road closure.

    Thanks :)

I would say (and to be clear I am definitely not a local I have just done a few Canterbury trips) that Porters Pass (the road) is pretty rarely closed and is opened quickly. At least one other forum member here regularly bases himself out of Springfield for clubbie trips.

If the snowfall is looking that heavy, you'd probably have a lot more issues getting up to the ski fields themselves. For a really epic forecast it would be worth a last-minute booking at one of the club lodges if midweek...infinitely better to be snowed-in up on the hill!

Back the day, before snow-clearing was a thing, apparently the Ski Club of Christchurch members would pack a shovel for everyone in the car, and if you hit snow on the drive up on Friday night, everyone jumped out and started digging. There was no road up to the Mt Cheeseman ski field, so you stayed in the bottom hut in the valley, everyone climbed the mountain on foot at the start of the day, and then hiked for every run (not even any nutcracker tows to the start). People were tough in the 1930s!

Castle hill would be a great base for proximity to the clubbies. You will need to self cater as there is nothing at castle hill in the way of shops.

One day last season we were in springfield and the road was only open to 4wd with chains. The only ski field open that day was temple basin which doesnt have the same kind of access road as the other clubbies.

You mean it doesnt have an access road...

Porters pass usually gets more snow than arthurs pass. but its cleared fairly quickly. How ever if there is snow on the pass there is likely to be snow all around castle hill.

Thankyou for all of the useful feedback.

With respect to the road being closed between Springfield & Castle Hill, we were mainly thinking about having enough supplies and also in the unlikely event that it coincided with our day of flying home.

We once got blocked by snow at National Park on the North Island, heading for Ohakune, on our day of flying in, so we know these things can happen.

    Hello again

We are looking to stay in Castle Hill Village for several nights in August but so far have found that houses we have enquired with won't take bookings more than a few weeks in advance, which does not suit us travelling from Australia.

Does anyone have any suggestions on houses in Castle Hill that will take bookings a long way ahead?

    Thankyou for any advice.
