Sandy has suggested that I start this thread as a place to put the system summaries which i have recently started putting in the "catalogue of different systems" thread....

This thread is intended to serve as a quick reference guide to all the snow-producing systems of the season, in a consistent format. I think it might be a good idea to keep it just to the topic, and delete stuff thats not related to the subject after it has had the desired effect....

note... some more snow fell from tue 12th July 2005 to sun 17th July at many resorts, but was not part of a classical 'system' and so was neglected for this purpose. Apart from these, the only other snowfall from 10th July 2005 and 8th August 2005 was some very small falls recorded on thursday 28th July associated with a system which was too warm for significant snowfalls at resorts. It should be noted that this system summary only describes the systems which produce SNOW - other less snow-productive systems occured in 2005, and these would be worthy of analysis at some other time and place...

^Note that the freezing level on the MLB sounding is about 2200ft or around 670m - extremely low. this is an example of a system which sprung up in amplitude only c.3 days out from way deep south (cold air was about 50deg south at that time) at about WA longs, and peaked in the right spot. Very cold...

Sad that the great Aug 11 system was the last entry in this thread [IMG] . I was thinking it should be the start of an epic month. Not to be. That was it in terms of good 15cm + falls in the season. Just a few sprinklings with lots of heat, meltage and rain in between after that. [IMG]

not a good year then......just ask the kiwis!

I still maintain that the systems were "peaking" waaaay too early; Perth has had a shockingly cold, wet and windy winter, far away from their norm.

Or the systems were peaking way too late; Sth America had a killer season!!

    maybe our turn next year

Mahtoh i've updated these paltry 2005 late season falls, and also the few decent summer systems we've had since then... just remember with these spring/summer systems that the associated "melting summaries" would also be relevant...

Very cold for early february! Classic tasman sea southerly burst. This system produced minimal snow, but it's worth including here because it's coldest air parcel since early Dec2005. The advancing cold air mass has completely twisted the prefrontal cloudband & is obviously about to isolate and **** itself in the pants.

ACCUMULATION UPDATE - weekly Snowy Hydro depth data(cm)... I'll try to compile on all Thursdays between each system from the BOM Snowy Mountains Forecast... Should add some snowpack 'base' context for looking through the archived systems, and give an idea of ablation rates through time and elevation...

An extraordinary system that produced many non-seasonal extremes, including breaking some of NSW/VIC & TAS lowest maximum longtime records.
Snow reported down as low as 450m ASL including Ballarat, Mt Dandenong, Jindabyne, Cooma & Canberra hills.

Snowfall estimates (please note, no official depth recorded as outside of season):
    Mt Baw Baw 35cm
    Mt Buller 8-10cm
    Mt Hotham 5cm
    Falls Creek 5-8cm
    Lake Mountain 20-25cm
    Thredbo 8-10cm
    PB 5-8cm
    Mt Wellington 3-5cm

djon also has some snowcam archives on his web page, so linking to thise may be a handy addition for this year.
