Nobody has seen Chuck Norris?
Does that mean he actually is the mountain?
Mel Gibson and his family at Falls Creek late 80s, when he was normal and very good looking
Claudia Karvan @azzski
He's never been "normal" lol
A side vignette on Mel's wife- she outbid my parents on the Bridge Hotel in Yackandandah years ago
If he was skiing - it wasnt him. Drinking coffee - may have been him.
I have no idea. Celebs probably love me because a) I don't recognise them and b) even if I did, I wouldn't make any deal of them - they have a right to a private life too.
Those with big egos may not like it, but I don't like people with big egos anyway.
Failure to recognise celebs is one of the very few benefits of prosopagnosia.
He was very friendly and polite. Funny story really, lots of people on the mountain were aware that he was coming, people monitoring whether he had arrived with walkie talkies. I was 8 months pregnant and for some reason had to pick something up at the Oversnow. I was about to get a lift back up the hill in the Oversnow, but a family were getting in with an immense amount of luggage. The guy heard my walkie talkie asking if I had seen Mel and he turned to me and said 'tell them yes and you're sharing the Oversnow with them'. We had a pleasant chat about skiing, FC and pregnancy and they dropped me off at Snow Crystal..(Snowski).
I've met a few. These ones stand out.
Marc Girardelli - Thredbo
La Bomba - Thredbo. I worked with his cousin.
Phil Maher - US,
Clint Eastwood - US
Andy Mills & Chris Evert- US
Franz Klammer - Austria
A bunch of skier and snowboarding pros like Sam Smoothy & Scotty James who stand out as good blokes.
A bunch of Aussie celebs but the most memorable was was Paleo Pete. What an absolute tosser. Grabbed a pair of demo skis on a demo day and kept them for the day, then took them home so he could ski them again on the Sunday. While getting the bindings adjusted by a female tech, who was looking after him. He decided to take off on the skis while she was still adjusting the forward pressure which made him almost fall. The look of death he gave her as he was yelling at her "what are you doing" when it was 100% his fault was so ugly. Not a fan.
Oh and this one was awesome as well, however brief. In Queenstown airport. Being held up as an international celebrity was shortcutting immigration so he would not be mobbed by the adoring fans. Security was moving us all aside. We were all thinking this must be big because many international celebs fly into Queenstown, many in their private planes etc. The huge celebrity swans by with his entourage, Kyle fcking Sandilands. Are you fcking kidding. Another great Aussie tosser.
He used to come up to Buller when his kids were at Timbertop.
I think she's shorter than you!
can't beat that
I've had coffee with Stuart Diver at Silver Star, had no idea who he was until about an hour later....and then it clicked. David Suzuki at Apex. Apparently we shared a lift with some big cheese dudes at Big White everyone gasping and carrying on about OMG did you see them !! freaking out sort of stuff. We had no idea, just obnoxious older drunken Aussie yobs in my book.
I developed a strong relationship with Martina Navratilova at Aspen around 1999. At Bonnie's restaurant:
Martina. (looking around for a table) Are you guys leaving soon?
Me. Yep, we are just leaving now.
While brief, I feel me and Marty (as I call her now) have a lifetime bond that transcends mere seating arrangements.
Also she's a very good skier.
I flew back from Scott Base with the King of Malaysia, does that count?
Telluride late 90's. We skied up to Lift 9, two people are just getting on. As usual no-one else in the queue.
But a guy was standing there with his arm outstretched stopping us from skiing onto the lift.
We stood there confused for about 15 seconds before I asked what the problem was.
"Sly likes at least two empty chairs between him and the next group". As in Sylvester Stallone.
Roll-eyes, f-off, pushed past his flunky and got on. But at that stage there were two empty chairs between us anyway.
Also Sly is a shit skier.
Heli sking in Canada in the 90,s met and skied with Mr. Doppelmayr and his son and they where very good skiers. Really nice guys very down to earth.
Hence the requirement of 2 chairs empty behind him. Give him a chance to right himself before being crashed into by whoever loaded behind him.
Bet that gave you a lift
Doesnt fill me with much confidence to know that the people who build chairlifts are not prepared to use them.
aha! Yes! My sister met him in a pub in Mt Beauty in mid 80s. She was so awestruck. Has a really awful photo of herself with him that she used to show to all and sundry. Not so much any more.
A TV character? I loved that show.
Do you mean Candice Bergen?
Had a drink and chat with the 2 owners of Saalbach- Hinterglemm in the Stamperl bar 2005 . Captain Stubing was also there. I made a bet that i would be wearing his hat before the end of the night- funf uhr tee ( 5am closing time) . I won the bet 7 beers and 6 Jaegermeisters later.
I swear I have heard the Kyle story before. Suspect you might have bitched about it on here before!
When I lived in Canada Bryan Brown was shooting a movie there and staying at the hotel I worked at. He took a real shinning to me being a fellow Aussie. Lovely man!!!
Ernie and Tim at Thredbo. And Gay Waterhouse.
I was living in Tahoe when Sunny Bono hit a tree. Hadn't seen him though.
Yeah! I probably have. Bitched is not a word generally associated with me. To funny.
Please tell me he wasn't wearing his captains hat.
I associate bitching with Kyle though!
Looks like he's still wearing it
Saw Mike Whitney at diggings once. As for famous people at thredbo, no one.
The Keller...how could you possibly remember!
I've skied with @Lady Penelope @sly_karma and @Astro66!!! On the same day
I've also skied with ski.com royalty, although briefly @Normo
Pfft Maier, Plake, Shifrin, etc
She was Murphy Brown then!
Ketchum Tully's she lined up with everyone else every morning for her latte
Of course the thing in Sun Valley is everyone is "normal"
The snow is a great equaliser. I love that.
It doesn’t make the POFOs happy though.
Ah! Mike Whitney. I was a handy cricketer back in the day (local level). At the time I was living at Dee Why in Sydney, late 80's and my boss asked me to come and play for their indoor cricket team, as they needed a couple of players for a week or two. So, felt obliged, even though I had to drive all the way to Malabar on the south side to play.
So we're having a warm up and the team obviously sussed me out as having some form. They decide I should open and I'm "yeah no worries". Hadn't seen the opposition. Stroll out to face the first ball and none other than Mike Whitney pops through the nets to open the bowling.
He had only just retired and hadn't lost any form. Wasn't one of my finer innings. Only got out once but there weren't a lot of runs scored.
I'm looking at my boss, "thanks mate, I drove all the way from Dee Why for this" thinking this was a royal set up. To this day he claims he had no idea.
