Who cares how many posts? The reason it's been going so long, is that Thredbo have not come clean about it. They've swept it under the carpet and are pretending it never happened. That's not good enough these days, and Thredbo should not be allowed to forget the incident, until they do something about it or at least, tell the truth.

I think Thredbo have done a stirling job. Nothing in the media, even the snow media. Imagine if the government could do as well!

Like any safety issue, until the major players lose $, nothing changes.
Have KT got the systems in place to keep their GM out of gaol if, in the event, the same incident occurs and there is a fatal?

Honestly I'm surprised the GM hasn't been filmed riding deathbarrel with his kid in the style of the brittish health minister feeding his young daughter a burger at the height of mad cow disease.
Should be the first ones up each day to reassure the public that it's unlikely to shed chairs.

I've been on one that did on the NZ South Is about 15 - 20 years ago.

An old chair, high wind, sole passenger. It gives you quite a surprise.

That’s the frustration/media-genius, they suffocated the story of any fuel. If they’d done that demonstration it would have given attention and highlighted that people might be worried

The story should raise its head again once the regulator releases some sort of report that is available under FOI laws. I'll be keen to read it.

So the power goes out at Perisher today. As well as running some lifts on gennies for a bit there’s this...

Thredbo could really learn a thing or two about engaging their customers from the flat land yonder.

So, what we've learnt from that image is:
    • Perisher has superb PR skills and their people can get quick authorisation to give away circa $100,000 worth of freebies. By contrast Thredbo is floundering in a pool of excrement, largely due to their unwillingness to say 'Whoops, we stuffed up and we're sorry'.
    • Perisher has 5G phone reception (see the bar at the top of message). Other resorts are jealous.
    • LMB has a flash brand new phone that gets 5G.

A black out is considerably less serious than a chair dropping, this doesn't seem like a fair comparison. I'm not defending KT though

Doesn't the greater seriousness of KT's situation make it even more important they handle the situation properly?
Shit happens. Unpredictable shit. Either you have systems in place to handle it or you don't.

    KT doesn't. Perisher does.

    This!

LMB has a relatively new phone (not 5G) but that was screen shot from someone else’s fancy 5G phone and unashamedly stolen from the PSR FB page by moi to illustrate how shitty KTs handling of current events have been IN COMPARISON to their nearest competition. Perisher impressed me with that response.

I’ll add I was chatting with @Ozgirl whose driving at the moment, and she said that the jibes about the power outage being caused by a freak gust of wind were thick and fast at Perisher today. LOL

Who needs that, when you have me! I spoke with someone, who heard from someone else, who got it from someone who talked to the passenger, and said

There was a sudden weird wind, like a whirlygig. the bar was up for unload, the chair swung in the "freak" gust, and connected with the tower. The passenger was dislodged off the chair by the impact. The chair swung back the other way, and came off.

Thredbo can thank me later, they are probably not allowed to say anything, but just wish they could.

Those chairs weigh a lot. If there were four people on the chair I expect the chair, the hanger and the grip taken together would still weigh more than the people. Easy enough to imagine there would be damage on impact even if the chair landed by itself.

Posted this before in the thread, but again I can't think of a reason for the buckling of the seat back to have occurred in this fashion, in that direction, if he wasn't in the chair on impact. I'd be interested to read any plausible explanation otherwise. The seat is buckling out, not in, so it isn't possible for external impact to have caused it.

The whole corner of the chair looks buckled. I could imagine the slats buckling if the chair landed on that corner in some snow. The bars continue to the dirt while the slats are buckled by the compacted snow. Admittedly it does look like the guy was sitting there when it landed (causing that damage) albeit the witness accounts say he landed separately.

Seriously though... look at the chair... if he hadn't have landed separately I doubt he would have walked away as he did (see @linked_recoveries post just up about weights of chairs). I'm guessing the lifties and the chair behind are possibly the only eye witness accounts and the liftie is most likely not allowed to speak (fair enough, i would want that support from an employer in a crisis too) and the chair behind .... well, they haven't spoken have they? The rest of us are all just guessing.

That's the thing, I am looking at the chair. Sure it's speculation, but the chair can be as heavy as it likes, if it isn't weighing on the passenger on impact then it's weight is irrelevant. Instead it is the weight of the passenger causing the force to bend the chair on impact that is relevant.

If the chair struck at the right angle ("back" downwards) and the passenger's back was pretty much parallel to the ground on impact, then the force would have been spread fairly evenly across his back, and it is possible he could walk away from it with just bruising and a dire need to buy a lottery ticket. This would explain the person-sized dent in the chair pretty well. That dent in an empty chair? That's an anomaly. The impact would cause the chair to buckle the other way if it was the point of impact. In theory, a particularly shaped rock outcrop could cause it if the chair landed "front" down, but it would need to be quite long and coincidently person-shaped.

My skepticism ultimately means nothing other than arguably interesting reading on teh intarwebz, but I am unsatisfied by the explanations offered officially or via speculation on the passenger being out of the chair on impact.

Not going to trawl back through 1000+ posts but witness accounts said he bailed and landed separately.

I could imagine the guy being spat out of the chair on impact. Then, once people looked down at the fallen chair, he appeared to be in a separate space. That wouldn't surprise me. Then you have to explain how his skis arrived where they ended up; one off to the side, and the other sliding down the hill to get caught in the little bush. Lots of speculation. I just can't imagine landing whilst still sitting in the chair and being able to walk off with just some bruising.

Nevertheless, given the damage to the chair it is what makes sense.

The "witness" accounts posted in here that said he bailed and landed separately were of the "someone told someone who told me" variety. The only person who claimed to have actually seen the incident (in that FB post) did not mention him bailing (or not bailing).

If it is the back, where is the seat? Has it flipped up?

Edit: On second thoughts maybe it is there, just the angle of the photo.

    Rumours I've heard:
    1. The reason why KT haven't come out and said what happened yet is that they still don't know... They haven't been able to replicate the conditions which caused the clamp to come off in testing the clamp from the chair that fell off.
    2. Because of 1 above, KT are seriously considering replacing Gunbarrel very soon as there's been 2 incidents on the same chair in roughly the same spot.
    3. KT profit is going to take a hit - they're facing a big payout to the poor bloke who was on the chair as his back is stuffed. I'm guessing adrenaline masked the true extent of his injury initially enabling him to walk away at the time.

Thredbo is facing 3 major lifts requiring replacement now, all while they're dealing with numerous other DAs and possibly a legal case. I would not want to be a KT exec right now.

I hope for the victims sake that a reasonable agreement is reached, back injuries can have serious effects

KT's insurers will take a hit. KT will pay an excess and their premium will probably rise a bit. They will not pay the payout.
